View Full Version : First ride and a problem already!
Well after being gone for a year, I finally got home! I was able to finally see my wife and 4mo son. It was great to be home.
Last night I decided to take my Nomad for its first spin, so I quick put in some UB and off I went. The first ride was all that I had hoped it would be.
But today, I was going to start doing some work on the bike, but neither of the keys I have will turn in the side cover lock, so I can't get that side cover off...
Any ideas....?
Did they work before? If so maybe the tumbler pins are a little stiff in the lock. Spraying a bit of lubricant on the key and inserting it or directly in the lock may help.

The ignition key is what turns the side cover lock. As CNC said, tumblers may to stiff. Try some graphite lub.

Graphite lubricant works wonders for locks.
The tumblers may be sticky and it may be the tab that holds it on. With light pressure on the key try to move the side cover side to side and up and down to release pressure on the tab.

Welcome back. I think I remember you saying your Dad or Father in Law picked the bike up for you while you were overseas, correct? Did he ever open the doors? Just trying to verify that someone or you have opened the doors to make sure you have the right key for them.
If you've already opened the doors with the key, then lube and jiggle around while slightly turning. Do you have more than one key? Try the other one. Are the keys original OEM or are they duplicates? I got some spare keys made during the rally in NC, and while they work, not as easily as the OEM keys as the duplicate ridges are "sharper".

I have to push on the sidecover so the latch will turn, spray some WD40 in the locks also to help loosen the tumblers if thats whats holding it

I couldn't get the seat off of my brand new 2009 Nomad 2 years ago. I thought I had a key/tumbler problem. Called the dealer and he said work the key in and out wiggling it back and forth until the seat pops. It finally worked. After awhile worked without any problems.

I think you got it, TC! Good job
haha, well the urgent business def works, but I meant ultimate baffles. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif haha
Getting ready to head out and put chuck's coasters on and do some electrical stuff. I'll try the WD-40
I have the OEM key, but my father-in-law didn't ever try to get the cover off. If I can't get it, I'll shoot the previous owner an email
Thanks

Good luck with the hard bags and getting them open. I'm assuming like the rest of the people, that it just needs some WD-40.
BTW.. welcome back. I'm glad you made it out alive and well.

Yeah, and I think we all like the defination of UB as "urgent business" better!
oh man, this is a kick yourself in the head kind of moment....
The little graphic on the side cover show rotating from the 0900 position to the 1200 position to unlock, so we would try and turn the key clockwise and it wouldn't turn anymore....
Well turns out the key can rotate all the way to the 0300 position, so of course it couldn't turn clockwise anymore. Turned it counter clockwise to the 1200 position and it opened right up...
At least I got that taken care of....
Now for this afternoon, a coolant flush and then modifying the tool box to fit my EMT light flasher unit. (Don't worry, I'm going to take pictures of my process of installing my EMT lights)

There is no 3 O'clock position on my bags. ???
I have 12 is locked and 9 is open.
I can also take the key out of the lock in the 9 O'clock position. That lets me, or a thief, open the bags without the key.
No I didn't make this conversion, it came this way new.

On the Canadian models we don't have to wait for a specific time, we can open them any time. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Wow, that would be a lot more convenient.
I hope they incorporate that feature in the US bike this year. ;)
Always one step ahead up here Tim. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Once you get the lock to open don't forget to slide the cover forward(front of bike) to get cover to slip off the two rubber tabs or you will snap them off. Don't ask me. :-)

Yeah anyone with the side cover pins still intact, it's a good ideer to silicone spray the rubber gromments once in a while. Mine work fine.

without going out to look at my bike, I'm a little lost. What are you guys talking about, cover pins?
Top Cat

On the side covers there are little pointy plastic pins that stick through rubber grommets to hold the side covers on. They break sometimes if you are not careful taking the side covers off.
