I took a ride today with my buddy. I take a route south of town a nice desolate black top we ride for a couple hours pass maybe two cars its a perfect day lots of sun ,temps about 80 perfect day for a ride stop in a small town pub for a pint or two and this older gent walks in and asks us who riding the nomad I say me and he talks for the next half hour about his . He tells me mine is the first he's seen set up for touring like his, a fairng, pak etc , Nice old gent! I trade up rides when we leave with my buddy and he mounts the nomad and I am on his suzuki, wow I got scewed on this deal I feel like maybe I should be pedaling along if I ride over a bb I can feel it I go 14 miles stop to p and tell him Ive been nice long enough I need my nomad back. He just laughs says if I let him ride the nomad back to town I would be crazy.. So we head back to the big city and I see a couple of bikes pulled of along the road and stop too make sure they don't need help. The rider walks back to meet me and says all is ok and ask about the fairing he's riding a vulcan and wants one etc I say check out reckless and off I go. I started this story to tell this when I tradede bikes with my buddy I felt like I was on a moped and maybe should pedal along I felt every bump in the road it was noisy etc etc omg I am so spolied I had no Idea I was riding a mercedes When I got my ride back I was so thankfull music comfort power etc etc enjoy your nomad if not, trade for awhile and you soon will

That's just how the wife and felt when we were in Maui during the Winter and hooked up with James and his wife. He had the Nomad and we had the rented Ultra Classic. I too felt neglected riding the Harley. Having to watch James cruise around the Island on the Nomad made us very jealous. The Ultra was clunky, hot, poor bottom end power and I felt cramped while riding it. ( Sorry Scott ).

the drinking and driving is never a good thing but i can assure you that the
suzuki m109 i owned had considerably more power then the nomad and
is no moped.he must have been on one of the 800's but even they have
comparable power to the nomad because they are much lighter in wieght.

When Lomax and I pulled into McBride, BC for fuel last week and some much needed coffee....it had been raining like hell and cold. There were two other guys there, a big dude riding a HD Heritage Softail and his smaller buddy riding some sort of custom HD bobber with a Springer front end.

The Springer rider saw our Nomads and almost gushed to his buddy about what we were riding...telling us he used to own one and how much he loved it. As he was shivering uncontrollably he was telling me how much more protection from the elements the Nomad had. He had no lowers or engine guards, and a puny little windscreen, so was near TOTALLY exposed to the rain and wind...and was obviously chilled to the bone.

You could hear in his voice and almost see in his eyes how much he missed his Nomad as he told us how great it ran and how much he loved riding it. I kind of felt sorry for the dude, but that did not stop me from adding to his pain by asking the obvious question...."So.....why did you sell it"...??

He put his head down, looked at his buddy, mumbled for a second and made some lame excuse about the dealer in Prince George making him a "deal he could not refuse", but it was obvious to Mike and I the real answer was that his macho riding partner shamed him into it....haha. BTW....do real men ride Heritage Softails.... http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif??

I don't totally get that. The Ultra Classic has some nice features.
It includes a lot of that right outa the box that we have to add to the Nomad to fairly compare.

I did think the "cabin" was smaller on the Ultra I tested but it has great handling, brakes, paint and gas mileage. I did not like it in the heat. I swapped with my friend for a while in Sturgis and nearly fried my cajones. I could not get off fast enough.

That's a plain and simple air cooled thing and HD knows that water cooled is coming for them.

The will turn off allot of their base if they do, so they will be doing everything they can to not go that route. Victory's don't even seem close to going that route, so I assume an updated engine and addition of oil coolers would help.

Even BMW is going to water cooling on their boxer engines. Emission requirements are making it necessary. The plus is, they will make more power and supposedly be lighter.

This statement brings to mind a friend of mine who bought a Harley.
I don't know what year or model, all Harley's look pretty much the same to me.
I go into his garage and he is doing something to the motor. I ask what. I don't know what you remove to put points and rotor in but that is what he was doing. ::)
He was taking out new technology and replacing it with old technology.

Many like the simplicity of the air cooled Harley. The frame change was a win win, so why not go with it. It improved handling, ride, without sacrificing anything. There was also upgrades to rear wheel size, long overdue. Going liquid cooled is easily debatable depending on what you like, want, and need in your ride.

Like I said, with tightening emissions standards, there may be no debate at some point.

Harley will have to go to water cooled very soon! They were supposed to in 09/10 but somehow got out of it! The watercooled motors will be mandated by production #s.Any manufacure that makes over x amount of bike will have to go water cooled. Not sure if Victory is in the high # range,, That info came from Easy Ridr and V Twin mags a year or 2 ago

Eventually they will have issues with the emissions standards. Then again, can imagine an electric Harley? Not really. A WC version would seem fine by comparison. Anyway, even Kawasaki uses it.

All vehicle manufacturers source parts from different vendors. In the case of HD, I think it's around 55% of parts that are sourced from foreign companies/nations. It's only going to get worse as companies try to compete globally and keep costs and prices down, and of course, profits up or at least the same. HD is really assembled in the USA.
