For those of you who have a Harley tour-pak, do you find that because of how HD mounts are made, with round tubes, and the bottom of the trunk being molded for these mounts, that a flat mount, like the wompus rack, makes it look wrong? It's looks like the trunk is sitting slightly above the rack and not flush/tight with it.

not at all Jared. Not sure if you can tell how mine sits and it's on a <s>wompus</s> scootworks if I remember correctly.
Here is a link to Cory's "strobe's" web site and what/how he did it. Now it's on my Nomad.

No problem as far as I am concerned although I made my own rack for my King Tourpak.

Is the bottom of your guy's tour paks flat?

If you get a chance, and wouldn't mind taking a picture of the bottom of your trunk with the rack. That would be great!

Morning all- my tourpak is on a Wompus rack and it sits far enough back on it that you can't see it up on the rack unless you are far behind . :)

What I did with mine........... The HD mounting rack is 1" diameter. I had a piece of 1" diameter hard black Delring rod (type of plastic). I used a bandsaw and split the Delring rod in half lengthwise to make 2 pieces of half round. I then machined the cut side down to the thickness of what the radius in the tour pack was, cut it to length, positioned it under the tour pack, and marked on it where to drill the holes. I removed the pieces of Delring, drilled the holes, then installed everything. This was using 4 mounting points, 2 on each side. Although it was solidly mounted, I didn't like how the back of the trunk hung over the rack (Wompus). I bought a HD mounting rack off Ebay, and used it to sandwich the Wompus rack between the HD rack and the trunk, this supported the back of the trunk. I did have to machine up a spacer to take up the thickness of the wompus rack, and also used a short piece of Delring on that also. Here are some photos, and look over my dirty bike please. All you can see from behind is the HD mounting rack.

TomK had Wompus make him a special lowered rack. I think it looks much better with the HD trunk installed.

My Tour Pak sat just fine on the Wompus rack, although when I added the speaker pods it made the rear passenger area kinda small. thats where Cliffs idea about moving it back a bit is a good idea.

About an inch or an inch and a half lower would be an improvement. If I didn't already have the rack I'd look into getting a lower one. Where the trunk is mounted on the rack is no problem, I just used four existing mounting holes in the bottom of the trunk and you have to crawl under the bike to see anything about the trunk mounting. It looks fine to me. Here's pictures on Shutterfly: http://tlwiz.shutterfly.com/2891

Wompus also makes them with a larger mount area for the Tour Paks if you ask him to.
And I agree that an inch lower would be better as well.

I bought the longer one to mount mine on will try to get some pics I also had my wife sit on the bike it ended up back farther than some pics I have seen. I put some rubber pads under mine in the center made a sandwich between the tourpak and wompus rack and run the bolts thru all three

I'll try and get some photos for you Jared. Yes I seem to recall it being flat.

Dave!!! Glad to see you're not dead. I haven't heard from you in awhile.

Jared - have you already ordered your rack or is it coming soon?
If you haven't ordered yet - you can get the extended length one for a bit more room.
I'm not sure about putting it lower - I never really gave that any thought.

As for and problems with it being a flat bottom - heck no, no problem at all. My last trunk was also that way (curved at the bottom for a harley tube rack) but had not problem with it either. I think the ridges actually help give some additional strength - and I've mounted my bolts through the plate on the inside of the trunk.

The extra length would be nice - wifey went for her first ride the other day and is asking for some more length (I've got her sitting too far forward/upright)...... but I think she's just trying to get away from me again!

jared I bought the extended wompus rack my harley tour pack fits fine I used the bolt holes in the tourpak and as you can see by this pic I mounted it back quite a bit the front of the tourpak is about 1-2 inches back from the front of the wompus rack and still works good I mounted a leather bag in front of the tourpak to keep gloves and doo rags in here are the pics of it without and with the bag. without http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa393/Nomadtom/Ultra%20Nomad/DSC00852.jpg with http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa393/Nomadtom/DSC00868.jpg will try to get some underneath pics later

If I was dead I would have posted to let you know.

The rack I built has a top plate that is flat and I have several mounting holes so I can move it forward and back. I simply cut pieces of bicycle rubber tubing to help protect the trunk and provide some vibration dampening when it's bolted down. You may want to keep in mind that the further the trunk is back and how much is loaded can change the handling of the bike. I have a fairing which adds extra weight to the front and compensates for what I load at the back.

I don't carry a passenger so my trunk is further forward than it would be if I was carrying one.
At a recent rally some of us compared notes on this and 1 with a trunk and a windshield noticed some front tire cupping he had not seen before. That may or may not be a result of too much weight too far back.

The genuine HD tour paks have the bottom with the molds for the tubing whereas the aftermarket tour paks have a flat bottom.
I think they are stronger with the molded bottoms over the flat ones.

I was talking to Dave, the owner of Scootworks last Friday and he brought up what was said about the Scootworks sitting different then my WOMPUS racks. He got a real laugh out of it. Since I make all their racks he's trying to figure out how he mounted it higher then my rack.
He's even got complements on the fact that he sells my racks with his trunks..?

Like I said before, Scootworks sells my racks for $265.00, where I sell mine for $220.00. Even less to the KawaNow members.

Why so much more? There are a lot of people who has never heard of my WOMPUS but has heard of Scootworks. They sell trunks and racks as packages, and like he told me, without my racks his trunk sales wouldn't exist as much.

Kinda makes me feel good about doing something right.... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif ::)

Now, why does the Harley trunks sit on round racks?? They have to re-enforce their trunks because of the vibration. With the re-enforcement they use the tube type to sit between the flat sections and re-enforced ones....

Also, like they have said, if you want one 1 inch lower, no problem, also where the Nomad top is 14 x 10 I can make it 14 x 14 for the larger trunks. Just tell me which one you want, I don't charge anymore on any of them.
