View Full Version : Broke down and made an order

I traded in a Suzuki Volusia on my new 1600 Nomad. That was one month and 3700 miles ago. One of the first things I did on the Nomad was install PhatRisers II to pull the handlebars back to reduce stress on my back. The dealer assembled the bike with the handlebars rotated so far down that I had to move my knees out away from the tank to turn tight because my knees were in the way. The risers cured that problem but my back still aches after too few miles. Seat seems comfortable enough but I need more back support. Today I ordered a Mustang wide touring seat with driver back rest and can't wait to get it. Not concerned with being moved forward or up as others have suggested because the Nomad is so big that losing an inch here or there is not going to make a difference. I am planning a trip to Wala Wala Washington in two weeks and this seat should make the trip a lot more comfortable. I know, this post is probably premature but I'm excited at the prospect of being able to ride for 10 to 12 hours on my bike and be comfortable at the same time. I will update this thread after I get the seat on the bike to let you know if it lives up to my expectations.

Now I need to save my pennies again to be able to make some mods to the intake, exhaust and ECM, and buy a luggage rack. It never ends. Modification fever has set in and the only cure is LOTS of money.

Dude thats awesome. I cant wait to meet you when you make it up this way. I'm sure that with your new seat that you will see an improvment in riding. Mine starts to give out after about 200 to 300 miles depending on the day http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif.

I went with an order from Biker Haven on E-Bay. studded wide touring seat with backrest is $569.95 plus $18 S&H. Could have tried to get hold of Extreme Suzuki to try to get the Volusiariders price of $562 delivered but did not want the hassle in the middle of the day. I only spent about 20bux more anyway.

I had a set of Mustang seats on my 2000 Vulcan 1500 Classic. Was told they would not fit on my Nomad (I hope that was the truth). Me and wife's butt miss 'em. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

...hey id..... just got home this afternoon from my first longer ride since putting my Mustang seat on. Left Saturday morning and rode down into Washington. We rode the north side of the Cascade loop, over to Port Angeles, further west to Neah Bay, backtracked a bit, up through Vancouver to Whistler (home of the 2010 Winter Olympics) and back home. Total about 1000 miles. The Mustang seat was a huge improvement from the stock seats but did find that consecutive 250-300 mile days did take its toll on the butt..... I'm sure you will like the seat... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Gotta remember, those Mustang seats need some breaking in before they get comfortable.

I plan to break mine in with a 600 mile day to Washington. :-)

Lomax, glad to hear that you like the seat. Can't wait................

I purchased a mustang seat for the 05 and then transferred it to the 07 when I bought it. It truly does help a great deal. Think you will like it.

Okay, now this is weird I know but think about it. Silicone implants in the butts of motorcycle riders for no lose gel cushion. Sure they may call you bubble-butt, but it's the comfort that counts. OH-OH, just thought of a problem with that. If one of them pop's or leaks on a long trip you have to ride home leaning to the right or the left. If you get big enough implants you can lay the excess on the back seat for your wife to sit on. I mean, really, aren't they always on your ass anyway.

for me 500-600 miles in a day is more than enough for me and my body. I have ridden 12-15 hours per day when I was much younger but was a zombie on two wheels. I couldn't imagine being on the bike 10-12 hrs in a day. I can't imagine anyones butt is doing well after that kind of saddle time.

Wow, I can see maybe riding an hour or two, and stopping for half an hour. :-)

Ride an hour or two...stop for 10-15 mins is fine with me....doesnt take long to recoup for me...like I said...I really dont mind the stock seat on this bike...I had a Mustang previously on another bike and think this one is pretty close to comfort for me. Just one opinion....several obviously feel different.

With my 4.2 gal tank... I have to stop every couple hours regardless..... My Mustang seat was well broken in when i got it... and I love it! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

That reminds me...last weekend kept pushing to the next stop for fuel......filled up and put 5.1 gals in the tank.....As I wondered how far .2 gals would take me I thought how well that 800 lb monster would push!!! http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif Would hate to run out!!!

Oh, and got 41mpg riding 2 up with gear...thought that was pretty good.

anybody that has added a mustang seat have a problem with the mar marks on the gas tank from the stock seat showing once the mustnag is mounted?? Front tip of mustang looks shorter than stock just wondering?

Doc

09-05-2007, 04:10 PM
Yes I had that issue with my stock seat rubbing my tank and making little marks on it. So I rubbed the marks out with polish and put some one sided sticky felt on my tank and it stopped it from doing that and plus it keeps my mustang from rubbing as well. Cost to fix $1.23

My Wide Touring seat with backrest should be arriving tommorrow.

I had one on my 05 Suzuki C50 and loved it.

The stock nomad seat ain't bad, but after about 1 hour my butt would start getting numb.

Did you get the seat yet ID?
The Nomad is a nice bump up from the Volusia/C50.

Beezer, the seat should be here this Wednesday. I check the UPS tracking site at least three times a day! I had my Volusia seat modified by a local upholstery shop that is owned by a Harley rider. After that I was able to put 800 miles a day on the bike. The Nomad seat is comfortable enough but my back gets cranky so I am going to finally give in to my advanced age and get a backrest. I am really enjoying the Nomad. So much more bike than the Volusia. Much easier cruising on the highway. Lots of lungs on the Nomad. IDaho

I absolutely love it. It does everything so much smoother and better. I had alot of fun modding the C50 and relearning to ride on it though. It's a great bike for a woman or someone of smaller stature (it never fit me right) or to bob. Made lots of new acquaintances over there as well at the VR. Looking forward to the same here. Does anyone know what a fabricator you are here or are you flying under the radar?

Idaho
09-09-2007, 04:30 PM
Nobody knows. I don't really consider myself a fabricator. More of a problem solver that got lucky with solutions that others wanted. The Nomad seems to have the bugs worked out so that there is not much fabrication needed for problem solutions. Only thing I've done here so far is make my own new panels for the windshield lowers but anybody can do that.

Beezer, I appreciate your confidence in my work. I really was not looking for a new business here. There is a guy named Vernon on Gadgets page at http://www.gadgetjq.com/buffetshield.htm that makes the same type that I did for $68 plus shipping. I don't want to undercut him.

That said it was a piece of cake to make the lowers. If you want to do it send me your home address and I will mail you a template that you can use to trace onto 1/4 inch lexan. Then you can cut it out with a jigsaw, polish the edges with a belt sander and drill holes for the mounting bolts. If you don't want to do that send me an email or personal message and we will talk.

Thanks again for your loyalty,

IDaho

I checked the UPS site at 11:30 this morning and found that the Mustang seat was delivered. EARLY LUNCH. 10 minutes after I got home the seat was on the Nad. Took me a couple of miles fiddling with the thumb screw adjustment to figure out where I liked the backrest position. WOW, what a great seat!! I really feel like I'm going down the road in my living room lounge chair!! I can't wait to hit the road with this rig on Friday. Seven hour drive to Walla Walla ought to be a blast!!! Yeee-ha !! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Not much form fitting needed. At one time in my life I recall having a tight, round, solid butt. Now I just have an old man's flat ass. Fits the seat just fine.
