Some times when I come to a stop and and try to down shift to 1st it's like there is nothing going on with the pedal .
I know that sounds odd but it won't shift at all so I have to try and take off in 2nd . Most of the time it seems I'm on a hill . But once I take off it will let me down shift to 1st. Has anybody else had this problem?

You need to still be moving when you downshift to first. If you are in second, or any other gear, and come to a full stop that is the gear you will be starting up from.

That's just the way the transmission works.

While your stopped give it some clutch until you feel the bike want to move, re-engage the clutch then try to put in first. I think the problem is the gears aren't lined up properly.

The output shaft has ball bearings that travel outward when the shaft is turning.

If the shaft isn't turning you can't shift. Like yellowjacket said, you HAVE to be moving.

The bearings will be in a position to keep the the shift forks from moving, unless the bike is moving.

I have used the clutch myself when I get caught in that postition. Start to let the clutch out and then pull it back in. Most of the time I am able to shift.

Txs Bob - That is good to know. I have experienced the same thing and had on idea why.

I'm glad i'm not the only one to have this problem . My older brother just bought a 2003 nomad this week I will let him know about this to . Can't wait to do some riding with him on the nomad he had a 750 honda so the move up will be nice.
