I'm looking to purchase a fuel processor for my 1600, running Vance and Hines Dual Baggers now and will be changing to K&N Air Filter. I run high octane fuel and still get pinging. I'm looking for one pretty much plug and play and want to stay around $200 range.

Opinions/Suggestions?

The Dobeck TFI or Cobra FI2000R seem to be the preferred units for most members here. There are other models, not as popular on here and therefore little support if you have issues or questions. They are both relatively simple to install and use.

Dobeck TFI is the one you want. I have the exact same setup and it works great.

I have the Cobra unit and while it works just fine I think the Dobeck unit would be a better choice. The Cobra unit does not work at idle on most bikes while the Dobeck does.

I too am running the Cobra and am well pleased with it. It does keep the engine a lot cooler. If I were to do it again I might consider the Dobeck.

All thumbs here - Please tell me why one should use a fuel processor. I run stock pipes and am pleased with the way my bike runs, so why would I want to add a fuel processor? If you try to explain, remember, I am the mechancial dummy on the site.

A fuel processor is really only needed if you change your intake (aftermarket air filter) or the output (aftermarket pipes). When you change the airflow going through the system, it will affect the air/fuel mixture and thus how the engine runs.

Or if you happen to have a stock bike that pings. Lean is lean.

I'm going with the Dobeck TFI, not getting much from Google, where's the best deal on them at?

This vendor usually has about the best deal:

http://www.customdynamics.com/motorcycle-performance-accessories/techlusion_fuel_injection_control_module.htm

Try googling for "Techlusion FI-2050ST" and you'll get better results.

If you go with the TFI, bring it over and help you with the install. I've installed 2 already this spring. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

What kind of support do they offer after the sale? Custom Dynamics has excellent support. Could be the best $30 you spend.

Are you a military veteran?

If you are you can get a heck of a good deal going direct to Dobeck. I did.

I'll definitely be taking you up on that offer and I promise not to let your manager know that you helped me! http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif Getting the V&H pipes next weekend and then the TFI probably the week after that. Should I wait to get the pipes on until I have the TFI then? or can you do one without the other?

Alright my next question...where's a good place to mount it? I'd like to put in the left side cover (tools area) if the wires are long enough.

Got it installed yesterday and did some local riding..first impression on a 91 degree day is couldnt make it ping, bike seems to run cooler, I set pot 1 a bit higher than the suggested setting for richer idle but gonna back that off a bit, still running on tank of fuel from before but I'm guessing MPG isn't as good as it was.
Overall bike has much more power going through the gears (especially 1st and 2nd). Didn't experience the usual stall out when stopping.

Your bike should run a good bit cooler. Afraid your MPG's will drop some. I know mine did and think most of the others on here saw theirs drop also. Well worth a little loss of MPG's.

You should be able to get it to run on 87 octane fuel without pinging, you may have to tweak the settings a little until you get it right.

Redjay, I admire your efficiency. I'm pretty sure I remember having to lift the tank (not remove it) to get at the injectors.

If not a professional mechanic, set aside more time. It IS easy, but you are doing a bit of splicing and wire routing.

When I do things to my beloved Nomad, I move about as fast as a professional chess player. In the TFI install, I took my time and cleaned the places that nobody sees or cares about, and used more wire ties than maybe a sane mechanic would use.

An drank a pot o' coffee and ate a bag of them cheap Dollar General Chocolate Chip Cookies.

No need to rush. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif

Mine didn't require any wires to be spliced, it took a little over an hour mainly because I had a difficult time getting the connector to snap loose from the back cylinder, afraid it was about to snap a couple times. 90 degree heat with 74% humidity doing the job on blacktop didn't exactly make me get into rush mode. A couple bottles of Gatorade and a sweat rag helped a lot!

Ringadingh,
I ran a tank of 87 octane yesterday, ran just as good with no pinging...mileage was about 1 1/2 MPG less, I can live with that :)
