I purchased a used chrome water pump cover for my bike and don't have the instructions. It looks pretty easy to install, but appears as though I have to pull two screws out of the water pump. That being the case, do I need to drain the coolant? I just flushed it a month ago, so I hoping it's not necessary. Those that have the pump cover, how do you install it?

I went out and checked mine and it looks like two screws hold it on. Id just remove them and install the piece, quickly if it starts to drip. You shouldn't lose anymore than a spoon or so at best.

That is what I did. Lost maybe two table spoons of coolant when doing it, but it seemed to work out okay.

I think the lower screw is the water pump drain hence the small amount of coolant loss.

Where would I find the water pump on an '01? I don't know what I have covering mine, and now I am wondering what it looks like.
Thanks for your time

Its just above the rear brake pedal on the motor, it has a rubber coolant hose connected to it.

When I installed mine, I lost zero coolant. It installs using the top/right water pump cover screw (with a stand off spacer) and the bottom left screw is one of the right engine side cover (clutch cover) screws. The #1 reason I got it was so I would have a place to hang the idle control cable. I didn't like it just hanging there between the cylinders, and it was also my favorite color (chrome) http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Looks like we got it for the same reason. I just can't get enough of that chrome! http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif

You can never have too much chrome. Glad you got it figured out on how to install Jared. Good job.

My chrome pump cover touched the front header pipe (V&H Baggers); it may not be an issue for stock exhaust. I cut off the leading edge of the pump cover (maintaining the same angle for appearance) so it would not touch the pipe.

My slightly touches, but it doesn't make any rattle or noise, so I'm not too concerned.

What about heat and touching? I don't have the WP cover, but heat would be a concern if it touched. My 06 cooks the right side cover near where the bagger head pipe is. This has blistered the paint a bit. I plan to trim the right side cover one day.

If anyone else has the problem use wide masking tape on the cover, both sides, draw the line to cut, and cut it just outside the line. Finish with a medium fine 1/2 round hand file. Then sand paper finer still.

I have a question On my 99 1500 nomad I was wondering if I removed the 2 bolts that hold the little bracket that holds the idle mixture cable to clean or replace with a chrome one would that cause a leak from the water pump cover? thanks

Mike I don't know. Injected bikes have the cable thangy doodle just hangin in space.
I suppose you could expect a few drops of coolant if these bpolts enter the water pump cover.

Do it cold if you do. One reason is hot the system is under pressure and you could get a nasty scalding. Coolant is sort of sticky and when it's hot it's damnned hot. If you get burned it worse than boiling water.

When the system is dead cold so long as no air can enter and it shouldn't enter easy a bit then if you work quickly you would only loose a dribble.

I have never seen a carbed Nomad to work on, but I am willing to bet the cable is a throttle plate opener only. It will let you adjust idle speed air only, and has nothing to do with any fuel.

If there is a pilot screw, that will adjust idle speed mix and crossover to the mid RPM band. I don't know if there is a pilot screw or not, but I think there IS and I think it's hard to get at.

Mac The idle cable just hooks to the carb where the throttle cables hook to and just opens up the throttle a little. The plate just holds the cable but the little bracket would look better if it were chrome It is now just a plain metal finish. Thanks mac for you're time!

Well up heya' in New Hampster we still got time. I am a little confused. Does the stock 99 have a bracket off the water pump? Or is it you mean to make one anyway? No injected Nomad have any brackets I know of off the water pump.

Anything I don't like the looks of, gets a flat black paint job. Pretty much that makes all sorts of parts seem to go away.

Mac hat is exactully what I was thinking! Instead of taking it off i will tape it up and not take the chance.Yes it is the stock little bracket that comes on them,

I didn't know there was any bracket on the 99 .... I guess if it were me and I wanted shine there, rather than make a bracket and send it for chrome, I would make one of numba 1 alloy and polish it as bright as chrome.

Getting chromed parts done up is usually in a lot, of a bunch, unless you have a friend or some other 'in' with a plater. In fact electric plating of silver would be cheaper. Anyone with a fishtank, a battery, and a little silver on hand can get that done over a few days.

It appears as ma kawii did away with that bracket and save 0.002 cents.
