View Full Version : Decision made on second thoughts

I am having second thoughts on making this trip east. :-/ ??? :'(
I know there'll be people out there that will say "I knew he wouldn't come/ride all that way". Well I have a couple of reasons I'm rethinking this. One is the fact that I have something called shingles on my right arm. This is more than a rash and the pain can get excruciating. It seems to hurt through to the bone. I'm worried that it'll become to too much to ride,... somewhere along the way.
I was hoping the shingles would be gone, and it seemed to be doing just that. But yesterday and today it seems to be coming back a bit and my arm is hurting again.
My other reason is that I thought there would be someone from around me or on the way, that I'd be able to ride along with. It's always more enjoyable to have a partner in case of a breakdown, accident etc..I even thought I might be able to hook up with someone somewhere. This is tough decision to make. I have been planning and wanting to make the 2nd National for a whole year. Not to mention the new Vaquero I could win {and probably would} for coming the furthest distance. I have to decide real soon. I have vacations that would need to be canceled and I also need to cancel my room at the headquarter hotel.
So I'm putting a call out to whoever might be borderline on going to the rally that is living in the "real west side" of the continent. I'm in Langley BC Canada

Not to be critical but I rode to a rally in 09 with sciatica so bad that it alternated between my whole leg feeling ice cold and numb (complete lack of feeling) to feeling like a super heated steel rod was inserted from the top of the leg to the bottom of the foot.

It was worth it.

I hope you can make it.

Ricky, I do hope you will make it. Caper took the words right out of my mouth. You could trailer the bike, at least until you get to where one or two others are leaving together and ride from there.

I suppose I could trailer it out. I have a friend with a bike trailer. But how much fun is that?
I'd also have to pull that trailer with my 98 Ford Ranger with a 4 ltr. gas guzeling motor with almost 260,000 km on it. I'm not sure that would be a good idea either. I also have the option I suppose to head south to Arizona and maybe ride with CJ. I have to think more on this one. Doesn't look good though.

Did you know that shingles come from the dormant virus of chickenpox you had as kid?

Signed,

Cliff Clavin

You know, I have a buddy that has shingles bad, on arms and hands. He goes in and gets some type of shot from the doctor, it really knocks it back for about two months.

I don't think you can have shingles on both arms or hands at the same time. I was told that they stop at half way across your body. I had them on the right side of my face. My mother and wife and sister in law all had them on one side or the other, on the trunk of their bodies. Per a discussion with my doc. unlike some MC riders shingles won't cross the center line.

"loafer" is right apparently. My Dr said I can have it on one arm, but not both, or an arm and say................on your face.. And it's real painful, let me tell you. I don't find the actual rash that sore. Yes they seem to be itchy and sting/burn. But my whole arm right into the bone ache, from the shoulder blade around to the shoulder joint and right down to the wrist. It does seem to have calmed down and the rash diminishing. I'm hoping it's all but over.

Thanks for the offer Dave but I won't be trailering the Nomad.

Have you ever had Shingles? It sucks big time. I understand why he wouldn't want to ride. Years ago I had it around one side of my waist and I didn't even want to sit in the car.

Hope you recover and keep in mind that if you are stressed about making that ride that will make it flare up again.

Well here goes,........I have decided that it's in my best interest to not make the ride to M.V..
As I explained there are a couple of reasons. health ...aka shingles and doing the ride alone.
There is now another deciding factor and that's the fact that as many of you already know, I have been on a "workers compensation" claim for over a yr. for a blown out knee that took place at work.
I talked with the insurance {WCB} people about taking vacation time for something booked previously, and they said they might not keep my claim open if I take more vacation time away from their "back to work" program. This pretty much seals the deal as far as not being able to attend the National rally. To say I'm disappointed is a huge understatement. I have been planning to go for over a yr. almost. {even though I have been back and forth on the whole thing lately.}
I just suddenly thought that although I have booked off of my claim twice now for vacations previously booked, I had better make sure this time is no different. Well I'm glad I did.
There will be other rally's and hopefully I'll make the 3rd National after "the powers that be" decide where on the west coast the next one will be. Maybe British Columbia!!! And there is always "the rally in the redwoods". If I have to be back at work and miss that one I will be pissed!!!
Anyway, decision is made, and I hope you feel my pain a little. I can't wait for photos and for everyone to tell me what I missed.

...just thinking Ricky. ;)

I read this whole thread.

First the health problem. That really sucks and I feel your pain. I have a condition called RSD that developed from an injury in the war. (google it and have fun reading what it does to a person) I take lots of pain pills and even have a spinal cord stimulator implanted to help with the pain so i dont have to take so many pills.

Never let a physical condition impair your ability to live life. Once you stop "living" it's all downhill from there. My father had Parkinsons and when he stopped living he was in a nursing home and dead within a couple years. I dealt with it as well when I got injured and went into a pretty bad depression.

I deal with something like workers comp because I was a contractor for the department of defense when i got injured. Sucks big time especially when it comes to vacations as well as a host of other problems i wont go into here.

As the person above said. Fly in and use a demo bike for a ride. Hell fly in you can use my bike for a days worth of riding and still attend the event. I will go sit by a stream or river and read a book that day. I didn't plan on riding all the group rides anyway so I lose nothing. Will certainly be cheaper then paying the gas to ride in or trailer in. I may be new to the forum but this national is going to be fun and I cant wait for it. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

The offer is open if you can make it.

You're not kidding TC!!!
But As much as I'd like to be there,....what seems to have been missed by some is that the "workers compensation" has said that if I continue missing time from my "back to work" physio program they "may stop covering" {paying me} my claim for compensation for my injury.

I am missing my physio now because of the shingles.....OK?
and the physio company that "workers compensation"
{the insurance co.} sent me to for a prog. to help me to rtn. to work sent me home and said not to come back "till I was better". Now ! the "workers compensation" is threatening to "cut me off " or "may stop covering" me.
How much sense does that make??? This is the deciding fact that won't allow me to make the ride.
I had decided that I would make the journey to M.V.. I have taken time off from this "back to work" prog. on two previous occasions during "spring break" with no problems. So I thought I better call these people again and let them know that I have vacations booked and I'll be away for a few weeks. {They didn't know,.. and I wasn't going to tell them I was doing a motorcycle ride.}
I was taken by surprise for sure. I agree with you "canedriver" that you can't let an illness stop you from living.
I hope this helps to clear things up about why I'm not making it to the rally. I was going to ride through any pain from the shingles, decided it would be good to spend some time with "rickyboy"....The decision to go, not go,...was taken away from me. Kind'a.

canedriver
05-20-2011, 02:54 AM
I understand completely about the workers compensation problems. It's why i said I wouldn't go into them here as it would fill a book. Lets just say if you knew everything I was dealing with on my disability you would be writing congressman about one of the reasons we have a deficit problem http://s2.images.proboards.com/lipsrsealed.gif I feel your pain on that.

Sorry you will miss the national and best of luck on dealing with workers comp and the shingles both of which are extremely painful in their own ways.

I am thinking about riding out to the west coast rally so maybe I will see you there. A lot depends on how the bike runs to national and how i am feeling the closer that rally comes. 3200 miles one way sucks. Really should move that west coast a little closer http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Labrador - great idea we would have to go in the summer; what day is that? ;) Last time I was in Sept Îles and Labrador City the snow on the runway was over the top of the DC-9 we were in and it was -40C/F - it is the same no matter what scale you use.
