View Full Version : fuel gauge, again
we had discussed mileage on a tank of fuel, but I don't think anyone ever said anything about the bars on the gauge. I've run with the fuel light on for 10 -15 miles and the last bar was still on. Now does the last bar ever go out while the bike is still running??????

You can run your bike completely out of gas, and the last bar will never go out. Seems like Maw Kaw would have made it to where the last bar would go out, with about 15 miles left in the tank. I wish the 5 bars were in halves, in essence the 5 bars would actually be 10 bars. The way it is now, it's not an accurate gauge, it just gets your in the ball park.

5 gallon tank and 5 bars on the gauge.

Just a reminder, it is not a good thing to run with your fuel light on. The gas keeps the fuel pump cool. Little gas in the tank, not good for the pump - or so I have been told.

The bars don't mean d*ck!! I've had the last two bars stay on and the yellow low fuel light come on. Took 4.4 gallons. that yellow light is gospel... Bars........... NOT....
My gas was so low yesterday that I was sputtering the last two blocks to the gas station. I got 4.8 gallons into it at that point so the whole 5.5 (oops, 5.3 gal) gallon tank leaves me half a gallon I can't use. It is the best choice to gas up as soon as the light comes on.

5.3 gallons if im not correct
I was just wondering, I would rather has a regular gauge. When my wife had her Honda we would get gas when she need it. Now with her 900 it also has a 5.3 gal. tank and gets about 10 MPG more then I do. I guess I'll just have to keep a closer eye on the my fuel.

You are correct Brad our tank is 5.3 gallons. You can't rely on the bars use the trip meter and after 120 miles or so fill up. You can go further than the 120 but this keeps it on the safe side.

What gas gauge? Motorcycles don't have any stinkin' gas gauges! Use the trip meter. I wish there were 2 of them.

Thats what Cindy and I do Lar. She fills up when I do. I start lookin' for a station around 160 miles on the trip meter. My light comes on around 180.
Either you get better mileage then I do or you fill it up above the bottom of the cup. My light comes on at 160

Pre 2004 there is 2 different gas tanks, and the 05 and up is another gas tank. So about 138 miles will get a yellow light on 04 and back with the one tank I knew. I don't know about the other.
Then with 05 and up, around 160 is pretty normal for the yellow light on most bikes. Mine varries from 178 to 198. Mostly 178.

Good information on this topic. I went too long on one bar and the light; it never quit or sputtered, but I was getting quite nervous. I will go with the 120 on the trip meter (my throttle habits don't always make for optimal fuel mileage).
