I have the Cam chain tensioners and a replacement clutch spring hanging up in my garage. My bike has 19,000 miles and I will most likely do between 10,000-13,000 miles this summer. Should go ahead and replace these parts now or wait until they give me problems?

If we knew when it would happen we would know just what to do. Of course we never know. Some bikes last longer before needing this done. It is quite possible the bike can do that many miles this summer and still not need it. I would wait but Jared that is your decision.

Jared,

I am no wrench but that seems like awfully low mileage to do it. I would think you could easily get to 25-30k. I have 18k and will probably put 6k on this year.

I have heard some Nomad clutch springs can go to 50k depending on how you ride. I also thought the average on the cam chain work is near 30k? It will be interesting to hear what the experts say.

utah you know on gadgets page it shows you how to see how much travel you have left on the extenders in about 20 minutes. They had a pole type thing on vroc and some people went over 100 thousand miles with no extenders added and some as low as 20 something needed them I know when talking to Bob Olgesby he said he has never had to use them on his older bike.if you are going to upgrade the clutch spring then I may do that just for the performance

Do the spring now and wait on the extenders.

You're talking a half day's work. Ride the bike until you need them.

I'd bet you are good on both for the rest of your riding season. I changed my tensioners at 25,000 miles. Each had about 4 clicks left. Clutch started slipping at 32,000 miles. Some ride their bike like they stole it and the clutch spring goes over 50,000 miles. I've babied mine since I purchased it new and the spring went out early to average miles. Sounds like a couple of good winter projects.

I put extenders in at about 35,000 and have not touched the clutch spring yet with almost 50,000 miles. I do have the parts to do the clutch and will do it prior to the National Rally. I am still on the original brake pads, front and rear. New pads before the Rally also.
I think that you will make it another season before you will even need to think about extenders, clutch would be an upgrade but not necessary. When are we gonna see pictures Jared?

Gibby Do you coast to a stop? 50,000 miles on original pads is great!

I wouldn't do either now if it doesn't need them. The cam chain extenders are way to early to replace. The clutch spring you could do it now, but Id rather wait until it started slipping, which may not be for another couple seasons.

The cam chain tensioners can wait....but if it were me, I would do the spring just as a matter of course, regardless of mileage. The bike acts so much more "real" with that spring and has such a positive hook-up that it is superior to the stock set-up in every way. JMHO.

I'm at 32,000 miles and my front and rear brake pads have very little wear.

I would wait till I knew they were necessary.

I do not use my bike for commuting. I try to downshift whenever possible and usually ride trunk hiways where there is a minimum of stop and go. I actually have about 20% left on the front and about 35% left on the rear. With the new Scootworks brake pedal I find myself using the rear brake much more often now. The Scootworks brake pedal is awesome. Oh ya. Brakes, who needs brakes? There are only two speeds, fast and faster.

I'd wait as well. I don't do a lot of city driving and whe my clutch slipped the first time I ordered the spring. About 35,000 miles on mine when it was done. (2007 leftover).

I believe I had three clicks left on the extenders at about 25 or 26,000 miles.

I could never find faster on my Nomad. I think they forgot to install it. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

60,000 kms on my bike and no clutch issues yet. Just did the extenders this week. The back cylinder was out of adjustment and the front had three teeth left. I would wait until you have a slipping clutch and 30,000 miles before you do the extenders ? You can always check the extenders to see how much travel is left. See Gadgets website on how to do that.

The extenders can wait. Do the spring now. Its an easy job and you will love how much better it hooks up. :)
