View Full Version : Almost clipped a sport bike while caging yesterday

Would have been totally my fault.

Came up to a stop sign at a rural intersection. The cross-traffic should be at 35mph, but from the left, the speed limit just decreases from 55mph. Also, there's a rise that precludes seeing cars until relatively shortly before they reach the intersection. At 35mph, there is no problem. When cars are at 55mph, it's a rather short go/no go decision from the stop sign.

I approached the intersection. Looked right, saw nothing. Looked left, concentrating on the rise. When I saw nothing, I started easing out, still checking the rise for any potential high speed cars.

At that moment, a crotch rocket came from my right, turning left into the lane next to me. He had cut the turn closely, but I was moving. I can't believe I didn't see him, but obviously I didn't.

For the rest of the day, every stop sign got a double-look.

We gotta' be careful out there. Those cagers want to kill us!

Thanks for the reminder. Both from a rider and driver perspective.

This is where headlight modulators should be a required safety item on all bikes ie: bikerbuddy.net I use one and it gets cagers' attention everytime. (Judging by the looks in their rear view mirrors)

How does that headlight modulator work, is there a switch to turn the flashing off when you want, or is there a day light sensor that turns it on or off? I definately think it is probably a good idea to have one of them. Anybody have any negative thoughts on them?

They modulate the high-bean when turned on. There's an optical sensor that will turn the modulator off when then not enough sunlight.

I like Kisan's

Can you override the sensor, either to turn it on or off?

I have the modulator on my bike and it works great. you can turn it off by switching to your low beams.

What Tom said is true but if you wanted to run the high-beams during the day with out the modular running, just put something over the optical sensor.

Seen a bike yesterday with no headlight on. It was in an opposing on-coming traffic lane so posed no danger to our group, but VERY hard to notice until he was right on us. Had it been at an intersection I could have easily pulled out infront of that bike.
Just a reminder to periodically check to make sure your lights are working.

Thanks Tom and Dave. After I posted, read that on the websites. That's a good idea about covering up optical sensor, would probably do that if on interstates and such, have it flash around town.

Pricey little things, aren't they?

Bob, glad everything worked out right for you. We all have to be careful.

Way cheaper than a skin graft. :)

I think the government should make us all wear beanies with flashing lights on our heads.
