So for all those getting their bikes ready for spring....

Shell Rotella is on sale at Canadian tire.
I picked up some 5w40sythentic (the blue jug) for $28.49 - savings of $9.50.
(I will have to compare this sale price with Wally world's next time I am there).

Yes, we pay too much for oil N of the boarder....

Why are we using 5w-40 when the manual suggests 10-40? I had also read in this forum to use the T6 Diesel oil. Why?

I bought a 20 litre pail last season at CT, its the Rotella dino oil but it was a good buy regardless, It should last me until the end of this season.

Thanks for the heads up. I have enough to Shell Rotella to do one more oil change so I will have to go pick up a couple of jugs.

Ringa - is there any benefit to using Dyna oil over the other stuff?

Raven - I am sure someone with more working knowledge will chime in, but I beleive the ability to use 5w40 (instead of the recommended 10-w-40) is because it is a synthetic oil. (gives you a wider operating range this way.

(jump in if I'm ff the mark anyone)

What is Dyno Oil?

What is Dyno Oil?

The stuff that comes out of the ground. As in Dinosaur oil or fossil fuel. The synthetic is man made. So they say are you running Dyno or Syn a short form, slang term.

I use the dino oil only because its cheaper and does a pretty good job. Synthetic oils main benefit is that it can withstand higher operating temps for a longer period before breaking down. Nomads don't really run that hot here, and I change my oil regularly, If i lived in a very hot climate I may considor using it, Id would also leave it in the bike a lot longer than 3000 miles.

Wal-Mart here in the states T6 goes for less than $20 a jug.

I do what Ringadingh does...shell dyno 15-40 I also change oil & filter at every 5,000 clicks (3000 miles) gr8 stuff!!
Only one thing I noticed, all the jugs has the JASO approved but the pale does not...what's up with that? I know it is the same oil,
just weird it does not have it labelled as such...:)
I also use the Purolator Pure 1 filters; I get half a dozen from the States.

Cheers

Try to find a motorcycle specific motor oil in anything other than 10-40 or 20-50. The 5 weight gives you better start up protection especially in cooler areas (I generally like that). As far as diesel oil, they don't have friction modifiers in them which are death to our clutches.

My guess is that they don't sell as many pails and it is older stock, the JASO certification on the Rotella packaging is fairly recent if I recall correctly.

I haven't run the Rotella dino in the Nomad yet but we've used it in every MX race bike we've run for as long as I can recall with great success.

I just asked my father (who vacations in Myrtle Beach, how much the SHELL is there in Walmart. It is $13.50/gal. What a steal. He is picking me up 4 jugs of it.

We can't even get the Rotella dino oil here for that price.

I like to break out the old girl (the nomad) as long as the roads are clear of snow - so the piece of mind I get from the 5w helps. And let's face it, I don't change the oil as often as I should - so a few extra bucks on the sythetic helps counter act my lazyness....

I just bought a gallon jug the other week, $20 bucks.

Don't understand why everything is so expensive in Canada, can you canadians explain? Is it because your taxes are so high? What is the national product besides Oil Sands, potatoes and baby seals and people with clubs? <smile> Does anyone live more than a couple hours above the U.S. Border?

I think its just gouging myself, Our taxes in Ontario are 13% buts thats added on top of the already inflated prices here. Some people tell you its shipping costs, but that depends on where from. Im a hundred miles from NY which is a lot closer than the same item going to California. Others say its tarriffs, but Nafta has waived a lot of those. Others yet say its demographics and population, but we also have some large cities here. No matter what the reason, where just getting the shaft.
I can buy Labatts beer here for $32.00 a case of 24, thats made in Toronto. I can drive to NY and buy the same Labatts beer from Toronto for $16.00 for a box of 30 cans. Go figure.
And this week our gas is about $6.13 a gallon Cdn for regular.

Where was that?

it's cause of all the protectionism we allow and the monopolies.
Do we want to start comparing the price of HD's north and south of the 49th?

Blue Raven,

I bought it a a car parts store, like a Pep Boys, Autozone, etc.

How hard is it to buy a bike or car here in the states then bring it back to Canada and get it registered, taxed, etc?

Bikes, boats, RV's Trailers etc all pretty simple to import. They are scrambling to get all sorts of unrealistic rules in place on newer cars to try to stem the flow of US cars into Canada.

5 of our last 6 MX race bikes came out of ND/MN, as did my RV, my enclosed trailer and my pickup. My newest car was bought in Canada most simply because I could finance it at 0% and didn't have 30k cash to pay in the USA.

Its not that hard at all, just a bit of paperwork, a $212.00 fee and we pay the taxes here when we register the bike.
There are a few used HD shops here that do nothing but buy US bikes and bring them back to sell.
My bike is a US bike originally from Alabama.

I live 10 minutes from the border and just got the T6 5/40 from O'Reilly's on sale for $17 and I think it is still on sale for that.

Usually I stick with 15/40 Rotella Dino but the T6 was priced right and I will try it.

As Ring says, I doubt there is much difference for the bike except in very hot weather. I change oil at about 3K miles. If I am going to do a longer ride into 90F+ heat I switch to Mobile1 15/50 Redcap Syn that I have stockpiled. You can't buy that anymore.

Oh and the prices are high here because of a conspiracy to draw Can $s to the US and dissuade US visitors to visit and spend money here. Obamas hidden agenda? Really, our dollar is higher and we are just trying to help out.

Hammer,

Thank you canucks for spending your money here in the states. You guys are doing such a nice job, that's why all the republicans here decided that corporations and the mega rich needn't bother to pay their fare share of the taxes.

So, once again, thank you for paying the money for them.

Signed,

Ripped off and no tax break for me

I was not completely honest. My wife loves shopping at places like Macys, Nordstrom, blah, blah. Because I ride a lot, I indulge her. Wow, that sounded a little condescending.

Because we cross so often, when asked what the purpose of our trip to Wash. State is, I usually say Retail Therapy and that is readily accepted without comment. In any case, my wife and I are happy to help out the US economy.

Hammer, Retail Therapist.

If you live in IL, IN, KY, MI, or OH check out the Meijer stores. My local one has Rotella T6 on the shelf for 17.99 a gallon right now.
