View Full Version : Cheapest possible 'decent' paint.

I'm in the market for a decent used Nomad around $4000, which seems to be as rare as an honest politician. Understanding that when buying used, I have limited choice in color, it would certainly open up the possibilities if I could change the color myself for say less than $500.

I realize some spend literally *thousands* on paint but I've also seen some some decent rattle-can jobs, using rattle-can clear coat, which can end up looking fairly decent.

I'm not thinking about anything fancy, maybe just plain black or a simpler non-metallic two tone color. Any suggestions on where I can do this or doing it myself? Has anyone done this?

I realize a lot of it is in the prep work and sanding between coats etc. and I'm not afraid of a little work but it would be that much nicer to pay someone a couple hundred bucks to do it for me with a professional paint gun and semi-pro paints.

Thanks all.

Doc.

I'm sure there are people who can do a rattle can paint job that turns out like a $3000 custom job with 42 coats of clear. Most people lack the skill and knowledge to do it. I am one of those people. Sure you can do it, but can you live with the results? I wouldn't ride a bike that looks like I used 3 cans of Krylon to paint it. But that's just me.

Wow! What's the old saying? Ask and you shall receive? Thanks RB!

Just got off the phone with Robert, [is he your son?] Seems like a great guy, looks like great work and his price is certainly reasonable. That takes a bit of a load off my mind as I no longer have to worry about color issues when looking for my Nomad!

Cheers and *much* thanks!

I like ColorRite at http://www.colorrite.com

They sell anything from touch up pens to 5 gallon cans matched to OEM.

Maybe you will luck out and find the Nomad you want in the color you want and you won't have to worry about repainting.

I'm certainly hoping so but considering how few I've seen for sale, in my price range, out here in the west, it's just good to know I can take that issue off the table.

Keeping the good thoughts and crossed fingers though.

If you are willing to stip the parts off your bike and do all the prep work (hardest part) I'm sure several shops in your area will spay a single color and clear for $500. I'd do it for you if you were a bit closer. :)

When I looked into it five years ago the shops wanted $2200.00 & $2400.00 here,if I took all the parts in to them, no prep and it included the fairing, lowers, and beerbox.

The prep, sanding, filling, glazing, etc is the most time consuming part. If you weren't willing to do that, it's probably why it was a bit more expensive, but $2200-$2400 is steep.

I spend 6 hours Tuesday, repreping my saddlebag doors to be painted. The prep is not a slow process if you want it done correctly. It is also the most important. Spraying the paint on my last bike (4 coats base, 5 coats candy, 3 coats clear) only took me a single work day. The body shop actually let me come in and use their booths to spray it and then I just put the parts in with another vehicle to get "cooked". (the owner is a friend)

I am currently painting my bike House of Kolor, Kandy apple red, with HOK dry metallics. Total paint cost, $250ish, total prep time, 15-20 hours, total actual spray time 3-4 hours (you obviously have to let the paint tack up between coats, that is the only reason it takes all day). This is also for a fully loaded bike, fairing trunk, two helmets, etc.

jared - I hope you took lots of photos of the whole process. For a guy considering doing a total paint job, it would be nice to follow your detailed progress!

Here is a post on painting the bike in my signature picture.

I saw that one. Not a bad bike and it actually looks like it'd make for a good road trip too. :) ...However, I called and they're firm on the price, and when you add to that another $1200 to get it home and registered, that puts it a ways over my limit. And that still doesn't account for incidentals... Oh well.... My bike will show soon enough.

Thanks for keeping an eye out!

P.S. Hey Utah, nice site. Ironically, I actually came across that on my own last week while searching for Nomad related sites. I even saved the link and a couple photos. :)

jared - I checked your blog before, and liked what you did with the first job.
Almost got me motivated enough to give it a try myself...... almost

Thank you for the kind words. I wish I new how to design and run a better site.

If you decide to paint and bike and have any questions give me a call. I'd be more than happy to help in any way I can.

I loved how the paint turned out on my last Nomad. The bike I'm working on now will be similar, but I have added some HoK dry flakes into a few of the mid coats. HoK Kandys look awesome, but their bases have very little metallic. I wanted to have the wet, deep look of a Kandy, but with a little bit of POP when I'd in direct sunlight. It should be done, and possibly back together by the end of the week.
