I just got my May issue of Motor Cyclist Magazine and they have a writeup on the Vaquero on page 57.
I quote,"At nearly 10 gallons each, the side-loading hard bags carry plenty of cargo. The non-removable design does, however, complicate suspension adjustments and rear wheel maintenance."
Can this be correct ???

Of course not. They have to be removable.

Anytime you have to use a wrench to remove something these bozos (not all sorry) say that something is non removable. In some sense yes they are right stopping for the night you can't simply insert a key and take the bags into the model room with you like some bikes have so in there mind they are non removable. But like many here have found you can make your own QUICK disconnect mounting hardware to make them easy to remove in a about 30 seconds. So take it from whom it was said by!!!!

They aren't easily removable, like on a C14 or my RT. I would guess that is what they mean.

Anything can be removed if you have a big enough hammer. With that said, they mount like the rest of the Nomads according to the parts fich I checked out at a dealer web site.

Found a video and it showed the inside of a saddlebag it looks just like ours. Just have to install quick releases.

What a bunch of bozos. What does it take to get out a socket and remove our bags, 5 min.
I don't see how they call that non-removable. ::)

I thought they should be removeable. It would be very difficult to do any work on the rear if they couldn't be removed.

They attach the same way the 99-08 Nomad bags do. Two bolts and they're off in a flash. I've had mine off several times cleaning the nooks and crannies... ;)

How many miles you got on the Vaquero and how do you like it so far?

Using the same logic, I guess the wheels are non removable. Must make tire replacement more complicated. ::) ::)

Easy to make them removable by adding some knobs, I guess they mean that some other brands have easily removable bags.

Not trying to preach the HD gospel here, but my bags use Dzus fasteners. 2 in each bag, just a twist and they're off.

Mine uses the ignition key. Just turn it to "release" and the grab handle pops up and it that's about it. Same with the topcase.

There aught to be three catagories.
1. Quick Release
2. Removeable
3. Disassembly Required (or pain in the a**)

Ponch's BMW has "quick release" bags.

The Nomad & Vaquero bags (though not quick release) are "removable" with just the turn of 2 screws.

And (because I just finished doing it when I installed the CB and CD changer) the bags on my 2010 Wing are of the "disassembly required" for removal type.

It took 4+ hours to get them off the Goldwing and half the body work on the bike comes off with them. I am pretty good at this stuff, I have the service manual and I still made three call to a forum tech line for assistance.

Why did you have to take off the bags? Is it to change the tire?

Just like changing the "Air Filter". I couldn't believe what you have to do on the Goldwing

Ponch, there's a way to do just the CB with out removing the trunk. I did the 6 disc CD changer at same time so I had to remove Trunk cause there are several holes you have to put in it. Plus while routing the wiring harness's and putting in noise filters I made a couple wiring mods also. And the trunk and saddlebags are an integrated assembly so the all end up coming appart to get the trunk off.

Actually you can change the rear tire without taking the bags off.

But changing the air filter is a four hour job on my bike and it is even worse on the air bag model so I guess thank heaven for small favors.
Wings are a PIA to work on, but then nothing ever goes wrong with them so ....

Hey TC...I've put about 2,600 miles on the Vaquero and am enjoying the hell out of it. This bike just seems to do everything right for me. Coming off of an 07 V2K, I was afraid I was going to miss the raw power of the 2000. Although it's no V2K in the engine department, I find the performance meets my needs and expectations quite well, and the handling is superb. I'm really enjoying the cruise control, fairing and great sound system. Overall, this might be the best bike I've ever owned, and I've owned plenty....

Good to hear that you're enjoying the Vaq. Any observations on the belt drive? Are the bags smaller than the Nomad's?

Thanks.

E.

Kawasaki redesigned the belts on all the 11 1700's. They are a bit thinner and narrower that previous models. They are suppose to be more durable and last longer too (time will tell...lol) I haven't heard a peep out of this belt so far.

The bags are absolutely identical to the older Nomad bags with the exception of no chrome strips on the doors.

Wait till you have to replace a headlamp. You may love the ease of bag removal but you'll really enjoy replacing the bulb. Enjoy!

Yeah, but the best part is that it'll be the right time to install HID lighting.
