My stock seat was fine around town but was told that if I was going to go on any long trips I should check in to a more comfortable seat. I looked at a few and they are very expensive. Most over 500 dollars .Is ther any that you know of that might be more reasonable and if so what brand and where should I look.Thank you

Seats are kind of personable, some may not be able to ride more than an hour or two while others never have a problem. You should try it on a few hour ride and see if its something that you really need to change. Most aftermarket seats are quite pricey and some are not much better than what you had.

I have a mustang seat which I like, but last week I did a 650 miles day on the stock seat. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. I think the biggest necessity, as far as seats go, is to have a back rest. There are several options for backrest which are much cheaper than replacing the whole seat.

May have a grasshopper backrest for sale when the guy reworked mine he padded the front of the pillion and dropped me down in the seat about 2 inches only time will tell on a long ride I will give it a try with out and with and see if I need it.

how much does it raise you up I am short legged and thats one reason I had my seat reworked I hope this rework is all I need
As mentioned, give the stock seat a try on some longer trips before deciding. My stock Nomad seat is far more comfortable than the stock seat on my previous bike (Yamaha). On that bike I had a hard time riding for an hour straight, were as on the Nomad I can ride a better part of the day before numb butt sets in.

I've had some 300-400 miles days on a stock seat without any problem. No back rest yet but one will help as I've had one before. I took my stock seat apart and found a "flare" molded into the pan just where your legs lie when at a stop. I'm short in the inseam so I cut off the "flares" and gained some reach. I can now easily flatfoot it.

I bought a fur covered gel pad a few years ago when down at Delmarva Bike Week. We road down on a Saturday and by the time we got there, my but was hurting. The ride back with the gel pad was much better. It cost $150.00 and has paid for itself with the comfort it provides. Coupled with a Grasshopper backrest, I'm good to go all day. So for around $250.00 my 200-300 mile days are easily doable. After many thousands of miles I have no regrets. Still less that a new seat.
Best regards,
Jerry

another trick is to wear bicycle shorts under your jeans it takes the sweat away from crotch area and gives a little extra padding

I have put Mustang seats on the last three bikes I have owned.Needless to say,I'm a Mustang fan.I have a Mustang two piece with a back rest on the Nomad.I like the two piece so I can go solo if I want which I have done. The back rest is a great added feature.I wouldn't go with out a back rest again. The Mustang back rest folds down which makes it much easier for this old fart to get my leg over. All three seats were found on Ebay at a great savings and in like new condition. The current two piece with the back rest cost me $400 shipped and I have payed as little as $250 for a one piece Mustang without the back rest.Be patient and check Ebay often if you decide this is the way you want to go.

Can anybody compare beaded seat covers, airhawk pads, viscoelastic bead pads and sheepskin? I'm not interested in gel as I've heard it can adsorb heat and then radiate the heat back for an extended time period. I don't need any heat near that part of my carcass!

Got to agree, my stock nomad seat is by far better then what I could fit on my Honda Ace......
What I find is that if you sit with the proper posture, straight back;shoulders square, I can ride all day and not even start to have a tingle in the rear section ::)

I tried a beaded seat cover before going to Airhawk. The airhawk is superior according to my butt.

I had mine reworked here locally. Had memory foam put in it. Cost was $125 for both. Wife loves the beaded seat cover. I bought a gel pad cover for both of us but neither of us liked them.

I went from stock seat to Mustang and that was better but still didn't do it for me on long trips. Bit the bullet and went with the Russell Day Long. Not cheap but I could not be happier.
That's the problem with seats. It's a multi-hundreds dollar crap shoot.

Wife and I both like using the bead seat covers, especially on those longer summer rides. Stayed with stock seats. I did peel back the cover and carved out the center of the foam on my stock saddle.

I had mustang's on my last two bikes and I would never buy an off the shelf seat again. It's didn't work for me. All I can say is that it might be worth while looking into a custom seat. Russell is one, Rick Mayer http://www.rickmayercycle.com/ and Bill Mayer http://billmayersaddles.com/BMS/Home.html are a couple others. They make the seat to your body. It's not that much more than a Mustang in terms of dollars. You get what you pay for...

I bit the bullet and got the Ultimate with drivers backrest ($625). I ride it solo. I can convert back to two up and I have sent my stocker to mean city cycles for the $140 re-work. Its getting done on April 13.
Cost is really a subjective thing on this subject. How much is your comfort worth?

Instead of just listening to others, have you taken you bike on a long ride (300 miles +) to see how it feels?
Seats are very subjective. What is comfortable to some may cause excruciating pain for others. Many people prefer the stock seat. I didn't and replaced it with a Mustang as soon as I could.
If keeping your butt cool is what you want try http://kontourseat.com/index.html.

Yes, I ridden the stock seat on rides of 350 to 650 miles in a day. Personally I'm trying to weigh refurnishing the seat versus an add on type pad.
I purchased a gel seat pad for use on for my 3rd previous bike which really needed it. The stock '07 Nomad seat is comfortable for me but as with previous bikes I've owned I keep it in the side bags and if I have been out for 8 - 10 hours I may throw it on the seat for the ride home. It was only $40. ten years ago and may have gone up but it has helped with four bikes already and was a good investment. (especially when used on my KLR). 'nomadtom69' is correct that it will slightly raise you in the seat, maybe 1/2 inch or so - I used it to gain some leg room when I had a Road King which was a little cramped for me.
This is the review you're looking for.

The problem with cushions is that the seat heat won't work (if you have that) so well or at all if you use some sort of cushion. I'd rather spend the money on a custom seat that retains that function. It really is a bandaid fix that does properly address the problem and that is that the seat sucks. It's trying to take the short way around the barn.

My brother has a Daylong seat on his Suzuki c90t and it is very comfortable.
I like the seat on the Nomad. The only padding I do is an Ibuprofen in the morning and one in the afternoon. Keeps the inflammation in the butt area down and that seems to do the trick! Lots cheaper too!

Right on. I've sat on some seats that other riders loved and my but said NO WAY!! Had my seat reworked with just memory foam and I'm happy with the results. Made 600 plus mile days bearable.

All I can say is coming back from Custer to home in one shot on a Mustang seat is not something I want to repeat. It didn't work well.

I had a C50 Suzuki before I got the Nomad. I had replaced that seat with a Mustang and when used with an Alaskan Leather Sheep skin (shorn to about an inch or so) I had no problems. I haven't taken the Nomad (Mustang seat came with the bike) on a several hundred mile day long trip yet, but I have used the sheepskin on occasion and it helps (no monkey butt). I think the key to being comfortable is to sit "in" the seat rather then "on" it.

It depends on the issue. Siting in the seat makes my tail bone hurt. Neither the mustang nor a speedskin helped (In fact, the sheepskin, which I got from the same place makes it warmer and less comfortable when the temps are over 55 or so). It's about the right seat design for a particular ass. What works for one, doesn't necessarily work for another. It's an expensive route to figure out what works and what doesn't. I'll never buy an of the shelf seat again.

I found the sheepskin got my butt off the vinyl and let it "breathe". I didn't mention I also have/had a backrest with each bike. Might be the backrest helps keep me off my tailbone and sitting on my "sit bones".

I've ridden a motorcycle with a backrest once. It was a Voyager with what I assume is the factory accessory back rest. It flet weird, like I was trapped on the bike. I didn't ride it long enough to see if it made a difference. I can say from initial impressions that the Voyager seat is better than the stock Nomad or a Mustang on the same hands down, but I'd need to ride an hour to really know it is any good.
Rick Mayer's having some stupid crazy deals right now. It was like $319 instead of $419 then another 25% off. Seat looks comfy too. Only problem is the turnaround time, wouldn't get it until like June 1st and there's no way I'm giving up that much riding time.
