Got on the Nomad this morning to go on the Annual Polar Bear Run, and my clutch "froze". It is very stiff and won't release once it is in gear. I don't think the dealer is open on Monday, so I'll find out what they will do on Tuesday, I'm still on warranty for another year as today is the anniversary date of the Nomad purchase.

Sorry to hear about this, Ken. Is the clutch on the 1700s hydraulic or cable? I am assuming they are hydraulic like the 1600s. If that is the case, I would bleed out the hydraulic fluid and to make sure there isn't any large debris causing the problem. The fluid is just a DOT4 break fluid.

would that void the warranty?

No.

Since the bike is under warranty, I'd let the dealer worry about it, though.
The 1700's have hydraulic clutches.

Weird. I went out to the garage to move my wifes car out and as I passed the Nomad I squeezed the clutch....it went in and out just fine. So I went on a short ride, ended up 60 miles and it worked flawlessly!

I know I'm not nuts because my wife saw it this morning when it wouldn't work. Maybe I just let it sit to long.

Moisture!!!! I bet this morning it was cooler then it was when you went out and TRIED it again!!! Change the fluid, I'll bet that there is contamination in the fluid. I wouldn't be surprised when you do it that it looks BLACK http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif and maybe even some CRUDE in there too :(

Complete FLUSH and fill with NEW fluid is in order BIG TIME!!!! ::)

His bike is only a year old. I can't imagine it needs it BIG time. It's almost a shame that it fixed it self. Now you just have to hope it doesn't happen again outside of the warranty.

Glad to hear it's fixed. Too bad you couldn't make the Polar Bear Ride.

Well didn't see it was a new bike (or a year old) but any bike's clutch or brake fluid can attract moisture depending on where it was stored. Having had a clutch do this to me (in a car) I know it can be due to the fluid. Still worth doing it as there was an obvious cause to why it did this in the first place. If just ignore it and think it's fixed he may be stuck somewhere which isn't a good thing. I still think it is very likely the clutch fluid is contaminated, but that's just my opinion based on past experiences.

You probably had some moisture somewhere, and it froze, later on as it warmed up it melted and worked again.

This is what my brake and clutch fluid looked like after the first 18,000 miles and being 1 1/2 years old. I'm about due again with 31,600 miles. If you don't have a Mity Vac hand vacuum pump, do yourself a favor and get one. It makes changing out the fluids very easy with no air bleeding needed.

You live in a very humid environment. I wonder if that contributed? You should do that every year. Have you checked the clutch master?

Glad things worked out with the clutch. I would still check with the dealer and let them know what happened.

Mitch,
That looks like the jar you're going to send my 'shine in.......but the liquid better not look like that ;) http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif!

Ponch, I pulled the entire contents of the clutch slave and master through the slave bleed valve. Did the same with the front and rear brakes. I'm due to change it all out again.
Kris, the shine is clear. I've seen beer this dark though.
