While looking for something on the net I came across this garage forum.Take a look at what some guys have for a garage. They have spent a lot of time and money building some nice places. I feel Id have to have a dining room set just to have you drop in for a beer. http://www.garagejournal.com/

Take a look at the editors picks, scroll down on the RH side of the page. They have some neat ideas to be seen.
I like the BMW house and the Bunker garage, it has a basement!

It must be nice to have money, even so, I'd do it differently... I like the BMW garage. I would have had another bay though.

Some of those cost more than my house. Heck probably all of them cost more.

And on the 8th day god created that. That is what I am talking about. The wife can have the house.

I like a lot of different architecture... Frank Lloyd Wright, Gehry, and so on... but that my friends is the ultimate architecture!!! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

As far as I can tell, it has all the comfort features needed. I could literally live in that and be happy as can be. ;)

When you have that who needs a house :-)

May be nice for putting your vehicles in but I sure would feel nervous working in that shop. Big thing is where is the hoist???? How can you work on a vehicle without a hoist??? The place we live in had a hoist in the shop when we bought it. Couldn't think of how I would justify something like that but it has been really handy.

A hoist can be added. I would also have a higher ceiling for the car lift. In fact I'd like to have two car lifts, a drive on and a two post. One side bikes, the other for cars. 3-4 bays+ the other stuff. It's only money. ;)

They are now selling lifts (2 post) electric that bolt to your garage floor at Harbour Freight and her at Princess Auto. About 2200.00 so coming down in price. They seem to work OK from the reviews. For a do it yourselfer not a bad price if you can afford it and have the space. I have neither so trolly jack and axle stands for me :(
Someday maybe.

I also agree that most of these "Man Cave" style garages are not functional or most of the owners (Jay Leno maybe?) wouldn't CHANGE there own oil in one. They are for looks mostly. Except for a FEW exceptions, you show me a garage like that or even a really NEAT one and I'd bet NO WORK gets done there, or very little.

Still nice to dream. Would be nice to have a bathroom in the garage http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I've worked around the 2 post hoist and have the in-floor hoist. I'll take the in-floor hoist anyday. Just a lot nicer to work with and around. The ones with the post always seem to line up with the doors and makes it fun getting in and out of them.

I would agree, and if space, money was not an object I'd have one too. And a pit for oil changes and.....but in my world a 2 post hoist MAY be an option, so I'd live with the fact of it's limitations.

They make a 4 post lift that you can drive on. That is the one I am referring to.

There are some nice garages around if you have the money to spend on them. The guy that has the Bunker Garage with the basement, also drives a Lambo, so I guess he needs a nice shop to park in.
A few of the garages are just more like a family room, but some of them do get used. The guy with the 69 Camaro does a lot of work in his. He also has another garage or shed where he keeps a lot of the stuff that would clutter up his nice garage.
I wish I had the room for something like that, I have a regular two car attached garage with way too much stuff in it.

Steve,

The last time I built a garage, the builder looked at me and asked; "Are you sure that is going to be big enough?"

I told him it was an expanded two-car garage and was my second one for the house.

He stood there; looked at me and again asked; "Are you sure that is going to be big enough?"

In hindsight... it wasn't big enough; but I wouldn't listen.

Moral of the story... You cannot ever make a garage too big! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I know what you mean Greg, Ive been in my house here for almost 28 years. If I had to do it over again I should have bought a more rural property with a few acres and preferably a barn.
Im into so many things that I have stuff for everything. My neighbours and pals all come to me before going to Home Depot because i usually have a better supply of hardware. ;)
Its handy to have all this stuff but a pain to work in such a cluttered space all the time.

I guess my garage in a box wouldn't measure up. But it did protect my Nomad from 72 inches of snow (so far) this winter and it only cost 275 bucks!

My bikes always went in the garage, even if the cars didn't.

Last year I had an extension put on my garage. Now it is 24 X 60. I can hardly walk around in it as there is so much "stuff" and vehicles. No room for a wide screen TV or an easy chair!

But is sure nice not to have to scrape ice off the windshields during winter. Now the big push is to finish the electricity, insulate, and put heat in it! It's still too cold for that! BnG

975 sq ft house - 650 sq ft garage 7 bikes / 1 motorcycle tent railer / 1 utility trailer / 1 PT Cruiser and still a little bit of room to work. I do need a bigger garage or I will have to trim the herd some more. I did have 12 bikes - 4 were stored in a pop up shed outside - now only 1 has been banished.

Right now at my house, we have 3 drivers and 3 cars, a 4x4 and my Nomad. We have a split 3-car garage. The Nomad has the single garage all to itself, well the trailer I pull with the Nomad is in there too. Usually my car is in the double bay and the other 3 park on the driveway. Our son will be moving out soon, so that will free a little space up as he takes his car with him.

If I had a 6-car garage, I'd find a way to fill it.

Build it and you will fill it. Even if you built a 100x40 ft shed, you will fill it.

Heck... with a garage that big... you should be able to ride figure-eights in it all year 'round! Snow or no snow!;D

12X24 garage with a boat and one bike and a freezer and a lot of junk in it, 12X16 shed with two bikes & snowblower and a lot of junk in it, storage in top of both.
18X21 metal carport with sides for the van and her jeep, the 6X10 trailer sits outside. I do have 150' driveway. Thank God the kids and their cars are gone http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif

40x60 old metal shop that use to be a motorcycle repair facility. Also have a pole barn and several storage buildings and two double carports.

i don't need this much space but they were on the property when I bought it.

One 10X12 storage building with a loft just has my grandson's plastic riding gator. :) He is 2 yrs old and thinks that is his building.
