Hey guys need a little advice. Under the left side cover (that's the kickstand side in my book) there is a black box above the tool kit. It's got a couple a couple of hoses going in it. Is this an emissions deal? I'd like to get rid of it if it's only for emissions. It looks though as a filter for gas fumes? At any rate, if you know what it does or have removed it could you let me know. By the way my bike is an'03. Thanks in advance guys!

Sounds like you have a California emmisions bike, that would be the charcoal cannister. I don't see why you couldn't remove it if you choose. Plug the lines that you remove.

Yep it's the charcoal canister.... emissions.... I took mine off and plugged the hoses.

Thought you lived up in Idaho. Wonder how it ended up with the California emission device?

Kickstand side is the left side. That is the same side the left turn signal is on.

Just as I suspected guys - thanx. To answer the question, I bought the bike used in Tucson, AZ. There were hard to find when I bought it so I found it on Cycletrader, flew down to AZ and rode it back. Pretty likely that the original owner bought it out of Cali.

Did you take off the other little cansiter that sits centered in front of the battery and has the 2 hoses from the back underside of the fuel tank running to it.

All the Nomads (including mine) I know of in AZ are CA emissions bikes. So it's not surprising to me that a Nomad from Tucson has the vapor canister.

Mine's in a box in my garage with other "extra" parts.

I have a California Drifter.
What do I gain by removing these canisters?

Nothing, except a bit of extra room if you need it. Thats the spot a lot of us mount our cruise control servo, and vacum resevoir.

I'd like to hear more about the cruise control, Steve! What did you use and where did you get it, please.

The cruise controls are an Audiovox unit made for cars but a lot of guys have them installed on bikes.
They were discontinued a couple years ago, when Audiovox came out with an all electronic version that doesn't require the vacum cannister. Its more money now, but probably the one I would purchase today.
There is also a company that started producing the older style vacum units again, it was mentioned here somewhere a few months ago.
A lot of us purchased ours very cheap, as an auto parts store was clearing them out. I love it especially on longer trips, no more sore wrist from holding the throttle all day.

An electronic cruise control is the only way to go. By far, the best mod I've done to my bike.

I'll second that, Scott! Each of the 'Wings I've owned have had them and it makes every ride more enjoyable. BP and I both want to set up one on our Vulcans.

Heres a link to some of the Audiovox units. Rosta is the new name for the older style units like a lot of us have.

I got mine in Ohio also. Got it from a dealer. It was an AZ bike, still had the registration from the original owner in the saddlebag.

Got my CA model in WA. 1 of you smart mechanical guys should do a step by step on how to pull the 2 CA cannisters.

Is it easy to install and about how much ?

I pulled mine . The bike runs fine and I now have room for my stereo amp. I suspect that Kaw may have made all of their bikes meet California standards just to make it simple for them. I have several friends that ride Nomads and all of us have the canister. Some of the bikes are Idaho bikes. At any rate, I simply pulled the tubes out of the canister, capped them with vacuum hose caps I got from the automotive store, started the bike and made sure it was running right. Then I cut the hoses back and re-capped them. I have not removed the canister at the front of the motor, but I will look into that thanks for the tip.

PS - The canister is under the left side cover.

Does anyone know where Kawasaki ships the bikes into. If its a port in California they may all have to meet Cali's standard.

I'd assume they probably are delivered to the Port of Long Beach, since they come from Japan.

Most of us bought the cruise control units when an auto parts chain was clearing them out. Some were marked down to $13.75 with an original price of $160 on the box. Installation is not difficult, but it is quite involved. You have to modify the left side cover area to mount the unit, you have to tap into the engine's vacuum system, there's wiring to be run and you have to connect the servo cable to the throttle body.

Gadget's page has a very good step-by-step (with photos) installation guide,
