Nomad Saddlebag Fasteners

Just wondering if anyone out there knows if anyone sells some quick releases for the hard saddlebags on the Nomad--the 1700, anyway. I find that it's a bit of a hassle to have to back out the screws every time I need to remove a bag. Thanks in advance.

Greg, here is an easy way to make your own quick release saddle bag mounts. I don't think the 1700 is much different from the 1500/1600.

If you take out the bolts holding your bags in, go to Home Depot (maybe Lowes?) And in the hardware department there are the bins with fasteners , etc. There you will find black knobs that look like the quick release ones you see on e-bay , etc. You will find that the bolt head will fit in the round hole by pressing it in. A vice would be best if you have access, but a large Channel locks would do the trick too. Once it is in place, take some Gorilla Glue or even Silicone and fill the space around the bolt head where it goes into the knobs. DONE. Now you have a set of quick release saddle bag fasteners for a fraction of the cost.

Hope that helps. I'm not sure of any part number but look into the bins in the screw isle there. I can't imagine any difference in US or Canada in that area. I can't remember the price, but it's not that expensive.

Thanks, Scott. I'll bet I could do that for less than $20.00 or not much more. And I have a vice and both gorilla glue and silicon sealer. I just might give that a try. Gotta be easier than having to round up two different sockets and a ratchet for the job.

I bought a set on the forum from James "Bubba" Andreu. He is down in Hawaii. I guess he made them as I managed to buy the last set. You might want to look him up and send him a PM. They have a large flat knob and they are made really good. They were also reasonable.

I did the same as Scott, but my knobs had threaded holes so I cut the heads off the bolt, threaded the bolt shank, and screwed on the knob.

Well, after burning up a lot of gas running around town to different stores, including Home Depot and Lowe's as well as ACE Hardware, I came up with nada. The only plastic knobs I found were at ACE Hardware, and the guy there assured me that, because the hole in the knob was smaller than the head of the bolt, if I tried to press it on, the knob would break! So I trashed the idea of that.

Can anyone give me an email address or some way to get ahold of James "Bubba" Andreu? Thanx.

Those are exactly what I made. Check the last picture in that ad, those look like the caps I bought at home depot and put on my existing bolts as I mentioned before. WOW...maybe I should make some up and sell them on e-bay!!!
Oh well, maybe too many had the same idea and they sold out at the local hardware store?

But they do work well to get them on and off quickly. Been using mine for years now.

Took your hint ad went to Home Depot, and nothing like that there. I may go back and check. Maybe the kid didn't know what I was talking about. Unfortunately, the kit on EBay only come with 4 knobs/bolts, and the 09--'10 models require 3 for each bag, and they're not all the same length. Go figure.

The '09 and '10 bags have two bolts that secure the sides of the bags to the frame, and a single bolt that secures them to the rear crash bar. That one is about 2.5 or 3" long, while the side bolts are much shorter. So it would require a set of 6 knobbed bolts to work on the newer Nomads and the Voyager.

put a nut on the threads, thread till the knob end, cut off the excess threads, spin off the nut which will fix the threads for you and badabing, perfect.

McMaster Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/#)is a great place to find ANY type of attachment. I used their wing head M8 80mm 1.25 thumb screws (part #92595A518) on my 2008 Nomad 1600. I tried the bolt caps and they worked for a little while then just got loose and fell off. Tried to epoxy them also but I guess just not enough surface to make it stick. The wing bolts work great.

I wonder if putting studs on and using thumb nuts would be better?
