It wants a password. If you post the password, none of us will tell anyone else.
That Road Glide Ultra fits you!
I wanted to get a better look at the new BMW K1600 GTL but people were swarming all over that bike.
I think it was the most popular bike at the show.
One of the BMW dealers there says they are pre-selling a lot of them at his store.

LOL!! You guys looked like a couple kids in a candy-store!!! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
Dave... I'll bet the new BMW was gathering all the attention. You know; with all the hype and apparent "demand" on that bike; I would think it would be better to wait a year or so before buying one so you could put some balance to the "supply-n-demand" for a better price -- and because it is a new bike -- to let them work-out the bugs they are going to have with it.
Otherwise you may end-up with an over-priced bike with problems the whole world knows about and you'll get crap for re-sale value.

We had a great time Bud, Greg, but I can't understand the 4 straight day of constant rain! We are setting records in California... 5 more inches are expected in the next 3 or 4 days.... I guess we need the moisture but I want to ride...

From the sounds of it, California is preparing to slide-off into the ocean with all the rain you are supposed to get. Then they were saying it was supposed to snow 15 feet in the mountains. WOW! http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

Yeah, everyone pokes fun, but those are sweet bikes. I went in to look at the road glide and almost went home with an electra glide.

Very nice...........
Kawasaki had a couple of Vagueros there. It would differently be a tough call to have to choose between a Nomad or a Vaquero.
One thing I notice was the Vaquero looked so much better with the lights in place of those vent holes next to the headlight. Those vents look so out of place. I can not believe adding the lights would not be the first item a new owner would want.
Trip, Todd, did Kawasaki ever say why the lights are not standard equipment?

Waterman,
Tom and I had to pry his hands off the bars in order to leave the show. The whining and crying in front of all the people. It was like trying to get a kid to leave Disneyland. Freaking embarrassing! We can't take him anywhere.
Between the Thunderbird and Road Glide Ultra I think he wants to join the Secret Society of the Shark-nose.

So they can charge you $300 at the dealer for the optional lights. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

THe thing is, BMW isn't going to the shows in the mid-west. Oh well. Just the coasts. He could have checked them out. I looked at the Roadglide Ultra. 23K+. That's a lot of linguini for what it is. Brad needs to test ride something not antediluvian.

Hey, hey, hey there!!! I happen to like my bike!!! I wouldn't say it is as antiquated as you seem to think it is.
It just isn't a BMW, nor intended to be... that's all.
Yeah the price it out there, but come on.... BMW prices their bikes for another planet!!! They had better be good for the price they are asking for them. Their prices are not even in the same league with most other bikes. So, come on Ponch... lighten-up a bit. ;)

I realize that antediluvian was a strong word. Ok. I could also imply that he might want to check out a C14, GW, or ST. Yes, BMWs are damn expensive. The cheapest thing on one is the rider. I was just hoping brad would explore a ride beyond the classical mess.

I'll tell you what Greg, HD has the nicest fit and finish. The touring bikes handle very well for their size, especially at low speeds. It's understandable why cops like them for city patrolling. They can be turned on a dime.
That said the bike that is making inroads with the police is the C14. I heard the CHP is going with the C14. It's interesting to read the police tests for motorcycles. CHP publishes it and I read one from Michigan. They are very thorough.
I sat on the Roadglide Ultra but they didn't have a demo unit. I rode the EG Ultra instead. Who knows what would have happened if I rode the RG Ultra. :) It was a lot of change though and they wouldn't budge on the price at all, so it was 23K large.

Greg, I have to admit you have a point. I actually was thinking about this very subject today. As a technologist, I use Apple products a lot. I used to be a true believer. Don't really care so much anymore, just see at as my preferred product although I'll probably go linux next time I buy a computer. I also thought about it in the context of my postings here. I will admit a mea culpa here. If the truth be told, I wish I could have both my Nomad and the BMW. I hated the hobson's choice really.
Anyway, I apologize for my rampant gloating and partisanship on my part. May be I am a little jealous you know. I really liked the way the HD looked but my left brain kept getting in the way. Other than that it really doesn't matter what we ride. I promise to be on my best behavior and I hope all of you just attribute it to exuberance of owning something new. I am sure no matter what I got I would have been on the bus about it.
Jim
I hear you; but they are not pieces of crap as you have so cleverly tried to state.
I never heard such an attitude from you before you bought a BMW. Not sure, but i have clue, what brought the change of attitude in you.
Police departments buy bikes for many reasons -- sometime it is what company gives the best price-break, rather than choice. Municipalities are broke -- so price points make a difference -- don't be fooled. Other people buy bikes for many different reasons also.
Not everyone wants a bike like a BMW -- I don't. Yes they make a good bike -- but certainly not the greatest bike -- and certainly not the bike for everyone. To be frank; one could buy several different "street bikes" and get nearly the same experience for far less than a BMW. Oh yeah, it may not have this or that; but who gives a sh!t.... you'll kill yourself on it before you ever see the bikes fullest potential anyway.
Everyone knows you bought a BMW (lord knows you made the point clear); but since then you have literally ripped on every bike mentioned on this site since if it isn't a BMW. When did BMW become "king of bikes" in your world. I know... since you bought one and you continually rip on other bikes since!
I am just saying that maybe you could lighten up a bit. That's all my friend... just lighten up. Your "rap" is beginning to sound like the typical BMW owner.
Just think about it my friend. Think about it and reflect on your posts. I believe you'll see what I am saying. ;)

Ponch,
I'll bet you didn't know I was likely the happiest person for you when you got your BMW -- more than you know. I mentioned to you that I should have one for the "twisties" that I like to ride (and it would be a great bike for that -- no doubt).
I knew you were extremely excited about the bike; and you should be - and continue to be.
I have met you, ridden with you, and have emailed you a couple times. I appreciate your input to many things beyond what you might imagine.
I am glad to see your exuberance regarding your bike -- you should enjoy that feeling and accomplishment in having what you want -- besides, you worked hard for a lot of years to have it.
But more importantly I am glad to see your humbleness in understanding in the moment of one's own excitement we might sometimes step upon the toes of others unintentionally -- and I knew you were not intentional in your "steps".
That was all I was saying... and Lord knows... I haven't ever learned to use "tact" in my approach to many things. To that I apologize. To you I thank you for your comments. ;)

Yup. Back in NY we call him Bobby.
WTH is the matter here? I'm glad I ran into this thread because you folks have no idea of what you're saying about Brad. I was there and he was drinking in that Road Glide, Ultra! I can't tell you how many times Dave and I tried to get him away from it!
Couple of thoughts:
1) The BMW was way over priced. The salesman said he could sell more of the "older units." He understood that he wasn't getting the new ones quickly. Go ahead, buy the old one! Pay an extra $fewK for the old one you can get right now.?
2) Yes! That was Dave converting Brad over to HD. I think Brad's getting a HD.
3) You shoulda been there, I couldn't leave with Brad stuck on that HD Road Glide! Becsuse I drove.
Best ride in my opinion- HD Ultra Classic. The Voyager was cheaply made as well as the Yamaha, etc. I won't buy another Kawa.
Sorry guys, but I have one.

All I can say is do a Ben Franklin, a column A and Column B with features for each, and lets compare them together. May be certain things don't matter to you and that's fine, but there's technology there in one that probably won't be in the other ever. Technology costs money to develop and it's passed on to the consumer, no matter the product. As for price, I paid a lot less for mine than the EG Ultra. In fact enough such that I could have kept my nomad and still financed the RT. Something I wish I had thought about more, BUT, if Brad had the hots, then god bless and he found himself a winner then. I will say the RG Ultra doesn't feel as cramped as the EG, which is a plus for big guys.
As far as the Voyager goes, it is a copy of the HD, but my only complaint is that I wish they did something more original (base it on the C14). In and of itself the bike is fine. I like the Vaquero more though, especially the Red one, they are the fastest you know.

Pay no attention to Tom Ponce!!! He tried his best but I'm a tough sell! No doubt all the new bikes are great! Like you said the Road Glide Ultra fits us larger boys better than the EG. I've always favored a frame mounted fairing. Less weight on the handlebars. I will be looking carefully for my next ride.
Dave, on the other hand reminded me how reliable my Nomad has been and the way I take care of it it runs perfect and is spotless so why upgrade?! Dave has a point. I have no issue taking it on a moments notice for a 1k ride.
BTW, Tom bought a near new full sized HD trunk to replace the smaller one with a rack that you see in his pics. He gave me his other trunk and mounting rack and it will be mounted shortly. Wompus made him a new mounting bracket so the HD trunk fits lower. The trunk he gave me weighs 1/4 that of the HD he's mounting.
It is a tough call to buy a new bike when the old one is running just fine.
For me, especially with a car, I get bored with it and want something new after about 4 or 5 years.
BMWs are great bikes. The only problem I see with them is if you need access to a dealer, there are not that many around. Also, without a right leg, I need something with a floorboard type brake pedal. If it weren't for that problem, I'd be on a GL1800 Goldwing.

My best friend traded in his bike a few years ago for a used BMW. He really liked that bike until something went wrong. Generator I think. No dealer near him so he took the bike to another MC dealer who told him they could repair it. They tore the bike down and then could not figure out how to get it back together. Took them over three months to sort it out. The dealer lost tons of money on the repair because they could not charge him for their incompetance. That was fair. After that he traded the bike for a Kawi Concourse and really liked that bike.
It pays to own a bike with a dealer fairly close.

Jeez..... what he won't do to get free beer and a meal!! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
Boy, I'm glad I didn't go to that show. Sounds like an epidemic outbreak of a very virulent strain of new motorcycle fever. Indeed there are a lot of great bikes out there, but mine has one feature none of the new ones have...........It's paid off.
I think I'll stay away from the shows.

You can add floorboards to the RT and the LT, BUT, I will also say that the RT has partial integral brakes. When you squeeze the front lever, it actuates both front and rear.
As far as dealer networks go, yeah, it's a problem for some. There aren't a lot of them, although more than some other European bikes like MG and Ducati. All I can say is, it's probably a good idea when planning for a trip, to know the location of dealers along the way. In fact, if you buy a BMW nav system (which is OEM Garmin Zumo), it comes with the dealers in it. I could add that myself... Like I said, the cheapest thing on the BMW is the rider. Amen.

That's crazy stuff Bud. It would have been better just to have it shipped to a dealer or back home.
I know BMW is looking for people to start dealerships for them, but from what I understand, the requirements are pretty stiff and they are sticklers for training. Parts, sales, mechanics etc. I don't know what the other marques are like, and while you can make a small fortune as a dealer, it usually takes a big one to get started. :)

Yes, too bad, but it is a variation on a theme with Tom. I like the guy. We got along fine when we met in Mesquite, but he left under similar circumstances the first time. Not sure why, but for some reason he tends to look for a scrap, and then picks a pretty small hill to die on. Sorry Ponch, that you got caught in the cross hairs this time. You're a good man. Thanks for dealing with it Trip.

I am going to interject something here.
Just for the record to all...
I know Ponch. He was the Regional Leader of the North Central Region; and I was his Assistant Regional Leader. We have talked numerous times online; offline; via email; via the phone (I think the phone once) -- and we have ridden together twice (once at the National in Custer; and last July at our Regional Rally).
I hoped that my single post (that Ponch "captured" before I could delete it) could be deleted. It was posted in haste and should never have been posted. I should have taken my concerns with him directly in private. He addressed it publicly, and I did as well.
I apologized publicly, and behind the scenes to Ponch. We settled our issue for the record.
For the record, I believe I understood Ponch to state he was excited about his new bike; and realized some might have taken some of his posts as aggressive toward other bikes.
Hey... that's easy to do when you get excited about something.
So... from my point of view... no big deal here guys.
I liked BD's post about being able to ride Ponch's bike. I am hoping I get too also when Ponch and I ride again. We can then take our debate on who has the "better-bike" to the beer-cooler!! And when we are done with that; we'll talk politics and the economy!! ;)
