Need Powdercoating Enlightenment

Hi and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays! I am seeking any friendly advice and feedback regarding powdercoating; I have no experience or knowledge of it.

I was hoping to get the area squared off in RED in the picture, the headlight bucket, driving light bucket, and 2 air filter covers, powdercoated in gloss black (if there is such a color). I got an estimate for $100. which includes doing a set of kuryakyn ISO grips, and an extra set of grip ends.

Anything i should look for? What makes for a better quality job?

I don't know much about the process, but that seems like a very reasonable price. A freind sent in a few snowmobile parts once and payed more than that.

That is very cheap I would be careful. First all parts that are not metal or that won't stand 400 degrees with out warping must be removed. All parts must be cleaned no oil fingerprints or any foreign substance, usually by sand blasting them but I have coated chrome with out blasting it and it held up well. next you coat it with power which is around $20.00 for 8 once's of powder then bake it at 400 degrees until it flows out then cut the temp down to around 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. I hope this helps you understand what is involved in it if you can get it done for a $100.00 that is a good price I wouldn't do it for that.

I like chrome, but I want to personalize my ride and the "blacked out" look really appeals to me.

Thank you. How much would you charge for the job that i listed? $100 seemed a lot to me, but then i have no clue. It's hard to find a reputable place, as no one i know can refer me to a powdercoater.

This is kinda a random question, but PasterGumby, how did you get you VH pipes to stick out so far in the back? They appear to be about 4" longer than most.

Those look like Honda Valkyrie exhaust tips Jared.I have a set on my Nomad but I cut 2 inches off so they only stick out a little further than stock.

Now that I look closer, I think you are right. They sure looked like slash cuts the first time I looked.

I do powder coating, and black is my specialty.
I use what they call Bengal black on all my racks. I haven't found a black that was more shinier then that to put on my racks.
Too bad you don't live near me... I could do it for half their price... <G>
Yes, that's a good price. I found that it's best not to sandblast any chrome but to wipe it real clean and spray it. Once it's been baked on it's damn near impossible to remove! Chrome tends to let loose if you blast it too much.

Yes, they are Valkyrie tips - and i also de-baffled my exhaust too. Thanks for the well wishes, I won't fuss and go with the only guy who really gave me a good quote.

You could remove your parts and ship them to Wompus. Then maybe he'd still do it for half the price ;)

Utah, get some of the Valkyrie tips. I have them and love them, plus the debaffle, makes for the perfect sound in my opinion.
