After admiring Nomads for years and coming close to buying one a couple of times, I finally pulled the trigger today - I traded my garage queen (a 2001 w 650) on a 2010 Nomad. Only 50 miles on it so far but I really am happy with it. I've been a lurker on this site for quite a while but now I feel like I have officially become a member. Thanks to all for welcoming me when I first signed up even when though I didn't own a Nomad at that time.

New Jersey??!! Man, you picked a heck of a time to buy a bike. http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

Hey, for real, congratulations on your new Nomad and you're gonna have to report on the ride, handling, and any glitches of the new bike. Some of us want to hear how the 2010's behave.

Thanks everybody. I sure wish the weather would cooperate so I could go for a ride, it's raining here today.

I've been riding a long time but this is my first cruiser and by far, the biggest motorcycle I've ever had, and it's also my first experience with running boards. One of my biggest surprises when I first looked at the 1700 Nomads was how well they fit me. I'm kind of short (5'8") and usually have a problem with seat height and/or bar reach, but this fit like it was made for me which makes me think it might feel cramped for you big guys. I'll keep you posted as I begin to get some miles on it and let you know how it's going. One big surprise on the way home was how loud the stock pipes are, I'm used to a quiet BMW.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Welcome "kovo",
I am a new member last year. I had a W650 myself when they first came out. It was a great bike but didn't have 'legs' to run. I have an '07 Nomad and has been flawless. Jim

Kovo and Jims,

When you say you had the W650, are you talking about the Kawasaki?

jims
03-07-2011, 07:45 PM
Yes. The bike was a Kawasaki W650 vertical twin. It was like getting back on a bike from the early 60s. Bolt upright riding position on a flat seat and it handled well but was a bear to ride over 60 mph with traffic.

Yup, mine was a 2001, beautiful to look at with gear driven overhead cam and polished cases. The trouble was that I just didn't enjoy riding it all that much, even with a Corbin seat, after about an hour my butt was complaining.

Those W650's were a nice looking bike, you don't see any around here though, other than in pics I don't remember seeing them on the roads.

I loved the retro look of them when they came out, great looking bike. Never rode one myself and I still have my old bikes I break out and ride sometimes.

The beautiful looks is the only reason I kept mine as long as I did, it became my garage queen. Unfortunatly, I only have room for two bikes in the garage so something had to go to make room for the Nomad and the W650 was the one I rode the least. I actually did pretty good on the trade-in, I got a brand new 2010 Nomad for $9.5k and the W650 trade-in. By my reckoning, I got about $3k for the W650. I still have several accessories for that bike that I need to sell. There is an active group of W650 enthusiasts on the AdventureRider site, I think I'll try to sell my stuff there unless there is anybody here that is interested.

It was a beauty but I too could not see keeping it for the little that I rode it. It is so rare though that I wonder if twenty years from now it is looked on as a '63 split window Vette that has quadrupled in value.

kovo1787

jims,
I wrestled with that too, but the conclusion I came to is that Japanese bikes just don't appreciate that way, no matter how rare they seem. The closest example I can think of is the Honda GB500, a beautiful cafe racer that didn't sell in the US either. GB500's have held their value, but the prices they command aren't even up to the original list price. The W650's are only rare in the US, they sold really well in Europe and Japan and have a huge following. I think they are still selling them in those markets today and now they have an 800cc version to go with it. I loved looking at it and polishing it but after 10 years I just got tired of it. Getting the Nomad is the fulfillment of many years of lusting over baggers but always hesitating because I never knew if I'd be happy with the size and weight. Now that I have it, I couldn't be happier.
