What stereo and speakers sets are good to mount in the fairing? Does it need to be a marine type?
Thanks,

Marine type stereos are probably better, but I had a regular pioneer unit for a few years that worked ok. I replaced it this summer with a Sony unit and Sony speakers. These speakers have a plastic cone whereas my old ones were paper cones.
You can put a plastic marine cover over the units as well, Bass Pro sells a couple different types.
I don't have any cover over my stereo and most times it doesn't get that wet. If it starts raining hard at work I throw a garbage bag over the fairing to keep it dry.

I've had a regular car radio and speakers for 3 years and they work great.
I've been caught in quite a few good downpours and they're like the "Energizer Bunny"

I have a regular car stereo in mine, although I don't get a lot of rain where I'm at.

I have been going back and forth on what to get. Right now I believe Marine, is the best way to go considering the time invested in wiring it up, rain, and washing the bike. Right now I lean towards Kenwood KMR 330. It is a budget radio for right at $95. I just don't want to baby the thing when washing or sitting overnight in rain at a hotel. I also purchased a cover for the front, but it does not protect the inner radio if rain comes in from the top shield area. Let me know if you find a better marine radio for around that price.

All I have really looked at are the marine stereos on ebay. Most are white but I had rather have black.

Try this place, http://www.sonicelectronix.com

There is a $99 Sony that looks silver, and the Kenwood I mentioned that looks gun metal gray.

They have good prices! I don't know anything about stereos and really didn't want a radio but I have a fairing ready for it (harley). All I want is something I can hear. How many watts per channel is what I need? What size speakers fit the harley fairing?
Thanks,

Thats one reason why I didn't get a marine unit. I think the plastic cover will be more than enough protection, if your worried about it getting wet. And the fairing should protect the insides of the stereo.

I ordered the marine unit last night, but I assume if the seal is good at the top of the fairing, any would work.

The HD fairing accepts 5.25" speakers unless I am mistaken. I think you should be fine with a stereo that has 17-20 watts RMS per speaker.

I have a Clarion stereo M-309 and is water resistant. Works super and comes with a remote, which is very nice to have. Speakers (6) of them are all Polk audio brand, which are marine grade.

I put a marine one in mine because I wanted one that had a hard wired remote control (I picked it before I put the fairing on - I was going to mount it in my saddle bags).

But, for the cost of the marine one you could pick up 3 regular ones..... so I'd be tempted to pick up a regular one and if it happens to get too wet in a few years you're still ahead getting a new one (and probably new features too!)

My Kenwood Marine was $95. If they had non marine for $33 I could not find them.

I've got a marine radio in my H.D. fairing.
Granted mine was incl. in the fairing when I bought the fairing and "tour pak" from "strobe. It has a removable face, remote, it has a USB connection so I have my iPod connected with it and it plays and is controlled right through the stereo. It has a nice coloured screen that shows a clock, or the album art work, the song playing....etc.etc..

Here's a link that gives you a good idea of what you get for your money.

Not sure what they sell for today but I think around the $400. mark. Worth every cent in my books. But watch the video after the advert..
