If you could have one other bike and keep your Nomad what would it be?
And why?
I have always felt the Nomad is a good compromise between a cruisder and tourer. For me I would set it up for single jaunts and let the Nomad be the cruiser and weekender and get a new wing to do the cross coutry stuff with.
How about you

I would keep the Nomad and buy a 2001 800 Drifter. I have always liked the look of the 800 Drifters.

The Gold Wing ergonomics dont suit me. My choice would be a Yamaha Venture if I could get my gammy leg in a comfortable position.

Thats a tough choice, there are so many other bikes that I like. But if I could have another it may be a Hyabusa or 1400 Ninja so when I have the urge to go fast it would be satisfied.
Once in a while I still like the feeling of something that will accelerate like a bullet. For now I can borrow my brothers BMW for those occasional moments.
Overall the Nomad is pretty good for my day to day rides.

Actually, I just did what you are asking. I just added the Nomad for longer trips, a little more comfort on the highway (even though I still prefer back roads to the slab any day). But I have the Volusia for my everyday ride. I'm in the staging plans right now to make the VOL a bobber, I don't need two bikes with saddle bags and a windshield, I love having the option now of what to ride.

I don't think there is a garage big enough for me to house all of the motorcycles (and other vehicles) I would own if money were no option. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif
I would like to own something for off-road riding and I've always wanted a nice custom chopper. Not even remotely practical, but just fun to ride.

Reviews have vision as a great bike. Since my Nomad doesn't have all the bells and whistles that would be a good choice. I won't add a radio on my Nomad and I'd like something with one. The vision would fit the bill.

I have to wonder if radio's will become a thing of the past on a bike with iPods and other MP3 players. There are more and more bluetooth headsets too and integrating all that stuff is getting easier. Just something to think about.

Oh man, this could be fun. Let's see.......... If I could have any second bike that I wanted what would it be? I traded a Suzi Volusia on the Nomad and now they seem too small so that's out. Harley Road King or Electra Glide would be nice but I don't want the summer heat issues or to be set into the HD crowd. Ergonomics don't agree with me on the Honda gold wing or any of the Beemers. I would either go for a Suzi M109 for short fun trips or save the money and burn it in gas tires and oil in the Nomad.

For me I would use an i-pod or MP3 but it's because of the speaker mounting and looks issue. If I went to a batwing fairing with speakers that's be OK but I like the look of the windshield on the Nomad. With the vision the speakers look right on, just as they're appropriate for the gold wing.

Sound quality wise, in canal ear buds are better than any speaker system and don't annoy other people in traffic. The other thing too is if you ride with a passenger, they don't have to listen to what you are as well.

It was my first choice, but my wife said she wouldn't ride on it. Said the cases looked like organ donor boxes. The other thing is you better be tall/have long legs for that bike. That said, it's very light, fast and will embarrass may sportier bikes in the turns. Having 8.7 gallons of fuel capacity is also nice, it has a 60 amp alternator for the farkle crowd and has a higher load capacity than a Nomad or Vulcan Voyager while weighing 300+lbs lighter. Good choice.

AC on top of that, makes it a 3 wheel convertible.

The RT is more of a UJM is riding style than the C14, ST or GT. That's one of the reasonsI bought it. I'd have have to dump money into the C14 to make similar ergonomics to the RT and without raising the seat on the RT. It's a little too bent over. The ST and GT are worse in that regard. Too bad they didn't up the displacement with the GT.

I certainly understand the time dilemma. I spent about two years re-building mine. Pretty much everything except the bottom end. But they are legendary bikes and worth the effort. The 850 in particular is definitely a sweet bike.

Nice selection of bikes. Tell me about them.
The Suzuki SV1000 is a fun sporty V-Twin,its is my day bike for those hooligan days.
The 1250 Suzuki Bandit has probably the smoothest real world usable power of any bike that I have owned. I use it for 2 or 3 day weekend trips in good weather.
The BMW R1200RT was purchased as a replacement for my totaled FJR1300 that got rearended on I-75 in Chattanooga.
The RT has been the best motorcycle that I have ever owned and it has also been the worst. I love the ride, the handling, the fuel mileage, all the bells and whistles. It has also been the only bike that has left me stranded on the side of the road, twice. The routine maintenance is very user friendly but the potential cost of
repairs for final drives, ABS computers and dry clutches is totally unacceptable to me. Appromimately 1500 to $2000 to replace any one of those. I put 80,000 miles on it and do love the bike but its time for it to go to its next owner, which will happen in 2 weeks .
The Concours 1400 did not interest me until Kawasaki made all the changes to the 2010 model. It is probably one of the highest technology bikes available on the market today. 156 HP and capable of 50 MPG. 2 stage ABS, traction control, heated grips,Electric windshield w 4 preset positions and selectable fuel economy mode that provides a 15 to 20% increase in mileage.
I bought it in March and have 16,000 miles on it now.
The 2007 1600 Nomad, well, I guess you are familiar with it.
I'm trying to make myself slow down and smell the roses a little and maybe my wife will ride with me some on it.
I'm kinda like Jim Dooley... the Screaming Eagle Road Glide catches my eye. But, if I'm going to buy a second bike for the stable, I'd look hard and heavy at either the new Kawasaki Voyager or a new Gold Wing. I might even get a Valkyrie if I could find an Interstate with low miles.

How did the RT leave you stranded? Just wondering. I think yours has the servo brakes, which are higher maintenance. The newer ones don't. Doing a clutch is a trip...Split the bike in half.
I considered the C14, but I'd have to change the ergos just to ride it. It's a little too cramped stock, at least for me, otherwise I think it's a great bike. The RT has more storage space too and I got the 49L topcase.

Simple; KLR650. I am looking for one now. Torn between the pre 08 and 08 to current design. But they are reliable, able to traverse dirt roads very well, great small, back road adventure bikes.
Another of Kawasakis best ideas. I can't wait until I get mine..... http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif

A good deal just came up for a KAWASAKI KZ 1300!!
$1000
only 42,000km with all safety inspection done. Thinking of taking it apart and transforming into a "bobber" of some kind.
will go see later this week http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I'd have to go for the Kawasaki Concours 14. I had an earlier model Concours prior to my '08 Nomad and really enjoyed it. I miss the available power that it always had available. I've ridden the newer one and WOW! I'd need the handlebar risers, but that would DEFINITELY be in my garage (if I could afford it).

The C14 isn't too bad price wise. If you are willing to settle for a leftover, a good deal could be made.

Had an 1984 KLR 600 and then up until 2 months ago a1991 KLR 650. The right wrist goes numb like my brain so it was getting too dangerous out in the mountains! If I could still do it I would go for the new version - I rode one last spring and the new version is much smoother - more power - way ( and I mean way) better lighting - and the brakes seemed better also. The new seat still sucks but a Corbin is not that expensive!

At 36,000 miles it developed an oil leak from a rear main seal, the oil contaminated the clutch, so I got that repaired under warranty. Good thing because that would have been $1500 to $2000 also. The servo brakes have been absolutely great , no problems at all. I wish the Concours brakes were as good.
I had a lower left throttle cable break at 50,000 miles while riding on the Cherohala Skyway. BMW said: we've never seen that before, well they have now. You have to remove all the bodywork and the fuel tank to get to the junction box that houses the cables and the cruise control cable and all of them have to be synchronized, not an easy task.
I was riding in the Everglades on my way to Keywest when my final drive failed. Fortunately I had already purchased a used unit from a crashed bike because I have seen way too many final drive failures with all models of BMW's. I called the closest dealer in Florida and they quoted me $1900 to replace the final drive, he knew exactly how much it would be because he was finishing the paperwork on another one at that very moment.
I called home and had my son ship my spare to me overnight at a cost of $137 for the shipping. I repaired the bike the next day and continued on my way. I paid $250 for the spare and have already purchased another spare final drive that goes with the bike to its new owner.
I have never had a Japanese bike leave me stranded . Those crafty Germans did it to me twice but they wont get the opportunity again.

I've read that the failure rate is around 4%. That is actually pretty high. It seems like a lot of bikes have some sort of issues. The thing is, you'd expect such a bike not to as it isn't cheap. I have already heard of issues with 2010/2011 RTs as they changed some things. In a way I am glad I got a leftover 2009 as it's mature tech in a sense. I guess you should never buy the first year of any vehicle.
That said my Nomad was very good. The only warranty issue I had was a coolant pipe o-ring that went after 6 months. Lots of people have issues with the clutch and cam chains, but I never did, although I didn't have a lot of mileage on it, 18K.
If the FD goes under warranty or not, the bike will go. I won't have it.

A busa is a sick bike. One day I was riding my nomad and was passing a car and I was going 75-80 in a 55. I didn't see anyone behind before I passed, for at least a half a mile. When I got around the car I was passed by a busa. I was like WTF? Where did he come from? I still don't know. He must have been doing 120+ down that road.

You know, I probably wouldn't ever put the 'Busa to its full potential... but I still want one. And from sitting on different sport bikes over the years, I felt more comfortable sitting on the 'Busa than any other bike. Maybe because it's stretched out a little more, I don't know. It just "felt" better for my 6'3" frame than other sport bikes.

I n our SCRC group is retired navy guy, we call him Al Bundy. He has several bike one of which is one of the 2300cc Triumphs. Hi son who is just now going in to the navy has a Busa that they are in the process of adding big bore kit to and turbo charging. Supposedly the whole set up comes a a package and they garuntee 280 HP at the rear wheel. Both are crazy for speed and he is talking about a kit for the triumph so he can keep up with son. I think I'd like to take both bikes for a spin but I don't think I want to own them.

You know, for me, it's not really the whole HP or top speed thing of the 'Busa that I want. I just really like the way they look and sit. I haven't put very many miles on one, so an extended ride is something that I really would like to experience.
I think for me, it's just knowing that the power is there and that I can have 'some' control of that power and excitement. Then it's the sleek curves of the 'busa that I really like too. As far as a bike can go, it's a 'sexy' bike and can be a head turner. ;)
That's just my opinion and thoughts.

Well, I was really interested in what everybody had to say, and there really are a bunch of bikes I would like to add to the stable. But, although I like the Nomad, the wife (who broke into being a motorcycle passenger on the back end of my previous wing so the standard for passenger comfort may have been set too high) refuses to ride on the passenger post. Says lots of things about why but bassically it just wasn't the back end of a goldwing.
Since the back surgery the reason for getting rid of the wing was fixed and I had been listening to "if you still had the wing I'd ride with you" for a couple years so, I started saying maybe I would by one and she said "hurry up" so.... I did. Bought a 2010 HPNAM model. That's heated seats and grips, premium audio system, XM and IPOD/MP3, Tire press monitor, Nav system, ABS. On new Wings Honda's giving 4 year unlimited mileage factory warranty and $1000 free accessories so added CB, headset, dual antenae and12v power outlet. Supposed to be in on 18th. Oh, I bought titanium so that it would match the Nomad.

Yeah, I suppose. The GW might be cheaper anyway and they are meant for two different markets. BMW is shooting for the younger sporty crowd. The GTL is lighter and more powerful than the GW and a little sportier. Let's call it the 30-49 crowd. Honda is supposed to come out with something new in 2012 anyway.
The BMW is a lot different than the Nomad. Completely. Most good, one or two things bad.

My first bike was a KZ1000. The new one is a R1200RT. Both are/were bikes used by the CHP, so Ponch rides what Ponch rides. Funny thing is I got the nickname from the Nomad. When I brought it home, my wife asked when I was going to start writing tickets and finished it with Ponch. So it stuck...

Sounds nice! For lux touring the Wing is the only way to go. Performance, comfort, and low maintenance un-equaled.
Five years ago I had a wing and a riding buddy had an LT and we both put a ton of miles on em, usually together. His maintenance costs were $2 - 3 thousand a year, mine were $2 - 3 hundred!
Maintenance fees aside, I never saw any advantage of his bike over mine. Then we both bought Adventure touring bikes him a GS, me a V-Strom. The purchase cost of the GS was almost twice what my strom cost and again, maintenance fees were many times higher than what I was paying. I put an auto chain oiler on mine and forgot about the chain, he was constantly worried that his final drive was going to fail.
Now, we have both gone to cruisers, he says he was tired of the high cost and finally dumped BMW, and bought a Victory. I got the Nomad.
I've not seen him in a while to see how he is liking the Victory.
Keeping the Nomad, like it and like Nomad people so I will just have a reason to ride more!

BMWs are expensive to own if you don't do your own service. If you do, it's not that much more than any other bike, although you'll have to do a little more.
The biggest thing BMW is a stickler for is changing the brake fluid. If you know how to bleed brakes, it's no big deal on newer BMWs. Older ones were a little more involved with the ABS they had.
The LT is a lighter bike and by most accounts I have read, it handles better than a GW and is a faster bike on the top end. They've since discontinued it and are coming out with a K1600GT and GTL series bikes which are in a class by themselves, including price.

As far as the GS goes, I don't know what year he had, but if it'e a 2007 and up, maintenance is very easy. It sounds like he didn't do his own work. It would cost anyone a fortune if they went to the dealer for everything. The GS is a great bike and I actually wanted the GSA, but the wife wouldn't ride on it. It fit me like a glove. While the RT is a little more cramped than the GSA, it does everything well, well almost. Very strong cross winds are a b!tch, but that's about it. I kind of like the 300 mile range.
Lastly, BMW stands for Bring Money Wilhelm and the cheapest thing on a BMW is the rider. :) It's a trip...
Sounds nice! For lux touring the Wing is the only way to go. Performance, comfort, and low maintenance un-equaled.

heres a picture of the quickest one that I had:

That looks like it would have been a fun ride. What kind of speed and times did it do?
Normal runs were 5.37 on the 1/8 mile at 125 MPH and 8.58 at 151 on the 1/4 mile.

Trap speeds seem a tad low for the ET. May be it's just been awhile.

must have been a while for you, trap speeds are spot on for the ET. The bike was deadly consistant and won several local, regional and national events.
I miss that bike more than any that I have sold, not so much the racing but the bike itself, it was show quality. I should have kept it and put it in a display case.

Used to race with a guy that had a suzuki that would have speeds around 160-165 for ets in that range.

Next time one of y'all are in Florida, keep an eye out for Roy "Rocky" Chandler. He's been riding since his Army days, now he is in his 90's, so...60+ years of riding? A year or two ago he switched to a trike after his stand sunk into the pavement and he needed help to get the bike upright again.
oh and for the haters: every one of those 60+ years has been on a HD
Haters ??? There are no Haters on this forum. We are one big happy family of motorcycle riders. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
True, but lets be honest, there's at least one Harley basher on every board...

A couple friends of mine ride K1200LTs. They do get very good gas mileage compared to any other full on touring bike - but the nearest dealer is 70 miles away and the maintenance is a bit heavy. If the delare was closer though, I'd probably jump on one of the many good deals on used K1200LTs that are around. As it is, I'm thinking Wing in about 3 years since I have to turn 50 first to qualify (kind of like the senior golf tour!)

as a former pro drag racer in motorcycles that ET and speed at consistant with a drag bike running a rear slick and wheelie bar.
Harley's factory drag bike runs mid 9's at upper 130's.
Ponch your comparing a modern day bike's terminal speed with a drag bike. Their terminal speed is high because they can't launch like justbob's bike.
My B modified turbo Suzuki ran 8.88 @ 163 MPH. that was back in the day when drag bikes only had road racing slicks as their rear tire of choice...

That's true. Mario's best was 8.29 at 165. He had al he could do to keep it straight as the torque was twisting things and the bike wanted to drift. Fun days. We also had a top HD. 7.7 in the quarter. Forgot the traps. I think it was near 200 if not over. Damn loudest bike I have ever heard. I used to start it for him in the burnout pit and if I wasn't wearing plugs, well, my inner ear would tickle. crazy bike. I had a lowly KZ1000 street bike with a wiseco 1260 kit.

I take the libertarian approach. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. The only thing I ask is back it up as to why.
