I am going to pickup a reckless fairing this week as my Black Friday special. Any advice on:

Best speaker configuration? I lean towards 2, 6.5" for less weight. Don't care for the 6x9.[/*:m:1sm1qjrw]
Will Harley shields and lowers bolt up to this?[/*:m:1sm1qjrw]
Any installation tips?[/*:m:1sm1qjrw]

Speaker style by choice..
Harely shields do fit,, I have a 5/8" Reckless Shield and a 12" Harley Ultra shield//The Harley Chrome windshield trim als fits
Lowers? I am assuming you mean the fairing wings? Not sure
as for tye Harley lowers for the crash bars they need to be modified alot.A guy name John on site makes lowers for the Nad,, hes in vender section

Mount the metal plates to the inner fairing..on the 1500 there is 1 left 1 right,on the 1600 ther are 2 left 2 right.. the extra plates are for spacing
and test fit BEFORE you paint the fairing,, You may have to drill the holes out a tad to line up (on the 1500) the 1600 seems to pop right in.....test fit all your radio gear as well.... and Look for CJs(Castus Jack pics on the radio wiring and mounting,,Man it the cats ass :) he has tons of pics..as for windshield height personal choice,, Im 6ft3 220lbs. IMO the 5" shield is too short lots of wind bouncing off the face(I wear a 1/2 helmet) the 8" is GREAT! the 12" is real nice for long rides but I have to sit real straight to see over it... Pics will be a must before and after paint

Mounting,, Pull windshield off first ::)

Thanks, I have a HD fairing with both 5" and 12" at home, plus the wings. Just wondered if the extra's would work. I will probably sell this one to someone when I get the Nomad all setup.

Can you post a close up of one side inner fairing below the speakers. The parts I have, I bought on Ebay and are just two cut pieces of lexan with 3 holes drilled. I won't have a fairing for a while, but can tell you if it looks close.

There are lots of shields on ebay like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-Harley-Davidson-Windshield-BLK-SMOKE-FLH-TOURING-/200547603184?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb19192f0

There is no mounting holes to easily thread into. It is not a direct HD copy. I think the ones I purchased could be made to work fairly easy by drilling holes and using your own nuts and bolts easy enough. I don't plan to do that just because I am not putting any more holes in this thing and removing them would require taking the outer piece off unless something better was fabricated.

I have mine all mocked up now with stereo and speakers. I hope to paint soon. Weather around here is freezing and garage is not heated so waiting for a good time. Going the DIY route.

I may grab a pair of wings and try one day,,Right now too much going on.. BUT pics when you finally get it all done is a MUST :)

How tough is it to set it up for the stereo yourself? I've installed a car stereo but in that case you had a rack to install it to etc. I would really like to grab one but I'm trying to decide if I need to part with all the cash for a full stereo setup or get the basic and source my own stereo to save $.

Get your own radio there are plenty of folks here to help you, I don't know where you are from but if you are close you can bring it over to the shop and I will help you put it in.

I think you will end up with a better quality stereo if you source the components yourself.

Reckless puts in about a $70 Sony Stereo, along with Kenwood speakers probably that run less than $40. He then marks the fairing up to $749. Save your money, get what you want. Go on ebay and search for Nomad 1600 fairing, then find one with make an offer. He should accept an offer of $220 + 50 for shipping. You may want to try lower.

The fairing comes with a Plexiglass windshield, so you may want to go get a Lexan one on ebay. The speaker holes will need to be opened up more unless you get lucky. If you want chrome trim, you can also find that lower than what he sells it for, by shopping around ebay. I may have went with his complete setup, but the price was marked up far too much.

For windshield options for the Reckless fairing, I recommend fastaire.com. It's a place in Reno that sells windshields and chrome trim to fit the Reckless fairings. Any "3-hole" windshield for Harley SG, EG, and UG will work as well.

Went with a flat black on the interior and a high gloss on the exterior. Here are some pics of the interior. Still having issues getting the exterior to look right, it crinkled up on me last coat.

I like the Flat Inner.. Bummer about the problems on the outer! What do you think happened? did you mix the paint or use a rattle can?At least with paint you can sand and repaint,, But still sucks you have to........Good luck

I am not sure, I wet sanded it, then cleaned with naphtha and had gloves on. Maybe put on too thick. Maybe did not have a good surface layer. Maybe it was the temp. Room was right above 50 degrees though, but it was 20 something outside. I am just going to clean it up and put it together to ride in the winter. I can't catch a break on the weather around here to paint, so I will redo the outer come spring. It's 19 degrees now.

If memory serves me right paint flow better around 70 deg room temp and low humidity, Too much moisture in the air can screw up a paint job......There are some great vidios on the web about painting! Ill see if I can find a few I had used,,,,,,,

It's too cold to get good adhesion. If you must paint in this cold weather, an adhesion promoter may help. I've had success with the "bulldog" brand.

Going to redo the outer come warmer weather. It's just rattle canned gloss black. It has areas needing improvement so I didn't even bother hitting it with gloss.

I have a cover for the radio although it is a marine unit. It snaps into what you see surrounding the radio. The speakers are Rockford Fosgate Punch 6.5". Got them off ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ROCKFORD-FOSGATE-P16....item3cb40 0a1f1 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ROCKFORD-FOSGATE-P1653-PUNCH-SERIES-6-5-COAXIAL-NEW-/260717978097?pt=Car_Speakers&hash=item3cb400a1f1)

Sounded good while in the garage. Have not taken it for a ride yet. It was a heat wave here today being 30 degrees. Woke up yesterday and it was 10.

The other day all the Reckless fairings on Ebay had a starting bid of $250.00, I didn't see any that let you make an offer.

And finally here it is.

Very nice. Gives me an idea of what mine will look like.

You appear to have the stock risers? How much space is there between the riser and the radio face?

In your opinion, if you had the chuckster 2 1/2 inch risers would they interfere with any part of the fairing?

You in KY? I was born and raised in Ashland.

I am in KY. I don't know if risers would hit, but I am sure there are others here that have tried it. If mine rose, the wide part would hit, but they may clear if you got to just the skinnier part of the riser bolts, or sockets. The wider part where the bars bolt would hit for sure unless raised past the main fairing park.

This is the route I had to take to have my risers and still have access to the stereo. HD 4" pull back with a 1" spacer underneath. ( which will be replaced by Bdog's expertly made chrome version )

If you don't use a marine cover for the radio they should work but it would be hard to get to the radio that is the reason I put the 13" ape hangers on mine now I have plenty of clearance and the bars are just about like when i had risers on mine.

Here is a picture of mine with the Phatt 11 risers on it from Scootworks they would not work after I installed the radio with a marine cover.

Oldbikers,
But the reckless does fit with Phatt II's, just not with a stereo, correct?
