Anyone here got a spare key cut for their nomad?
any suggestions on where to get one - other then through the dealership?

Tried two of the key cutters in various stores - didn't have anything similar to the kawa key.

Just looking to get a spare to have on hand....(no - I won't tell you where I am planning to hide it!)

I bought a couple of keys on ebay and took them to a locksmith to have them cut. He said he had the blanks for half the price of ebay. At my old age, sooner or later I will lose my keys. So I hid one on the bike, if I can only remember where.

If you don't mind a generic key without the fancy bow (head), any locksmith will have it. Should be 3-4 dollars cut. What is that, about 25.00 Canadian? http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Start with eBay and if nothing ther I would check with the dealer. They aren't like automobile keys with all the electronics in them. Shouldn't cost much at the dealer and they can cut them there.

I would say just go to your local locksmith. They have the keys and run $2.50 to $3.50 as others have said. I would only mess with Ebay if the locksmith didn't have any.

Local locksmith had blanks that worked and cut several keys for me. One stays in my wallet. Try them on the ignition and the bags before you leave just in case...

Ricky...where you get those?

rickyboy

I made them !!!
Cut a hole/slit in whatever your using for a top or "fob"....cut the key down far enough to fit {the skull or whatever you're going to use} You want it in fairly far so to absorb the stress when you turn the key......... and long enough to still go down the length of the ignition. Epoxy the key to the "topper/fob" You can use anything you want or like. Take a walk through a "dollar store". There's a ton of stuff to choose from. If you want to send me a cut key {it's hard to get the key cut with something on the end of the key.} and some idea of what you want on top, I'll have a look around and make one for you if you want. Or send both the key and the topper and I'll make one. It's dead easy though.

Thanks for all the comments folks, I'll be sure to try a real locksmith for it.

As for the plan - I want a spare, but I've always wanted to do something a bit more fun. One of the ones is going to turn out like this

None of the lockshops here had a blank, I bought one on Ebay for about $7.00 and had it cut here at the hardware store.

Blackdog,
I got one cut in Edmonton at Western Lock and Key. They're in an industrial park area in the SE part of the city. You pretty much need to go to a locksmith; Canadian Tire and the other usual oulets don't seem to carry the Kawi blanks.

Any decent hardware store can order the blanks. I have several and refuse to use the stock key.

The last thing I want is to drop and loose a stock key some where. All any fool needs to do is read it and look around.

The 2 keys I carry have a checkerboard appearance.

No car keys i use have a car logo on them either.

I knew a man who was beaten 1/2 to death because he lost his Volvo keys at a Holiday Inn.

The thief was very clever and also violent. He unlocked the only Volvo on the lot, took the registration into the INN, claimed to be the owner and told the clerk he lost the Inn room key.

With that he entered the room and waited, to damn near kill the rear guy and robbed him as well as stole the car.

The guy was a customer of mine at the time and I got that lesson the easy way for once. He looked bad.

Some interesting points there mac.

I always wonder about someone losing their keys with the electronic fob on the key ring. If someone unscrupulous finds them all he's got to do is walk around the parking lot hitting the lock button and waiting for the horn to sound to find the vehicle.

Once he's found it he could easily be gone with your vehicle.

I wouldn't know about that, but it sounds likely, and whom ever could stand a lot more bad if that sort of thing were to occur. The newest vehical in my mini fleet is the 06 nomad. Everything else is mid 80's. I don't and won't own anything with ODB I, much less ODB II.

Some things aren't ment to be.

Thanks for the tip on an edmonton source canuck.
Mac - sorry to hear tehe details of your story, but it makes for a good reminder to keep safe while on the road.
You make a great argument for not carrying a kawa key!

My local locksmith cut one for $2.50 It is just a metal blank with no plastic head. I cut it down a bit and it fits in my wallet (just in case).

When I bought my bike (99 Nomad), the guy gave me some spare keys which work everywhere but the helmet locks which appear to have a thinner slot. Has anyone else seen that?
Also, if you have the original key with the numbers on it, does that help you any getting a replacment and where?
