I'm doing a brief de-lurk here to say hi.
I've been soaking this site up like a sponge since I got my 2005 VN1600 in July. I've not had anything worthy to contribute yet, but maybe soon.
I put a little over 1000 miles on the bike since July. Took the MSF "Returning Rider" course. Feeling much more comfortable on the bike these days. Went on my first group ride with about 40 riders from work (Fire Dept) in memory of two of our people who passed from cancer in '08. It was on a drizzly September Saturday. Now I have a clue about group rides. Of course, I read what I could find here about group rides. It was a big help. It was my first ride over wet roads in rain too. No mishaps, but the 'pucker factor' was a bit high. The bike performed splendidly - and the rider managed to keep the rubber on the road and the crash bars off it.
I'm dying to get out for a ride over to the Catoctin Mts before all that pretty fall foliage is gone. Three weeks ago I rode down to Purcellville, VA and on the way back took a detour through Burkittsville, over the mountain, past the War Correspondent's Memorial, through the Antietam Battlefield area, and back home over the mountain via the Old National Rd. and Frederick Md. There sure is a lot of history and beautiful scenery around here.
Just finished installing a Cobra light-bar on the bike, and I'm looking forward to a few 'upgrades', like a Stebel air-horn and some highway pegs. Most of my desires for the bike revolve around safety and comfort improvements.
I'm loving my return to riding more than I ever expected, and I look forward to meeting some of you IRL in the future.
Cheers,
Dale

I am in the same boat here. I picked up an 03 nomad with only 6300 miles on it in June. Have been busy riding and enjoying the ideas that are on this post. It has been great. I trade a sportster for my nomad and have no regrets...the nomad is an awesome ride. I have only seen a couple of nomads out on the streets and look forward to meeting some fellow riders soon.
Happy riding,
Bullman

daleg, you say "I've not had anything worthy to contribute yet"
Don't ever let that stop you from posting. There are a few members here that don't let that stop them ;)
If you have been lurking since July you should know a few also http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

And... you were saying TC? http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
Seriously guys... welcome aboard. ;)
But one thing you have to STOP doing is posting this time of the year about "great-rides" when others (like me) are no longer able to ride!!!! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Pay no attention to the man with the glwilson screen name.
Post all you want about great rides. It just makes us guys who have a winter layover appreciate the riding season more. ;)

Welcome Dale and Bullman from SE Louisiana.
And another Very Welcome. Like the man said, many posting here, having nothing to say not a deterrent. YOU know who you are ;). For real, love to hear about any and all of the different experiences. Lots of similarities, too. Know all about that pucker factor in the rain. It's not as bad as you think it is, just take your time and you'll learn to "read" the road. Group rides are sometimes great, and sometimes not so. One thing for sure, some of the best group rides you will have will be with this bunch.
Good, solid leadership here, no wanna be's or hot dawgs. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif Post often, it's how you get to know your fellow nomaders.

I resemble those remarks! There'll be no posting behind the back around here cuz it's all up front and personal. Welcome here also and we need a location on Bullman. I worked Saturday but Sunday is open for <s>a ride</s> an adventure after church. :)

Hi Dale,
Welcome from up in Thurmont. If you're taking the road out of Burkittsville (home of "The Blair Witch Project" for you outta-towners) up over the mountain, you obviously have some confidence and/or skills.
We definitely have some nice roads in northern Frederick county/southern PA. My weekends are usually hectic, but maybe we can meet up some time if you want to explore.
Be careful, though. I'll try to get you into the Patriot Guard Riders. Formations, riding in the rain, honoring another's service--perfect qualifications.
Welcome aboard.

I went slow. The last time I went over that road was from west-to-east on a bicycle as part of the Cycle Across Maryland tour.

Thanks Bob. This is surely some nice riding territory, and I'm familiar with Thurmont, I've been to the National Fire Academy a few times.

Funny you should say that - I was looking at the Patriot Guard website. That appeals to me. There was a contingent of Patriot Guard riders in the Mount Airy VFD Carnival parade a couple months back.
Welcome aboard.
Thanks, and thank you all. I wasn't sure anyone would pay attention to my ramblings. You may have unleashed a monster!

Welcome to the forum bullman and daleg. If you can out asinine any of the asinine contributions already rendered here, we'd certainly appreciate it. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
Ask most of these guys to use asinine in a sentence most likely they'll say "On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give her asinine." http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I agree with TC , pay no attention to that gwilson guy. He rides a Harley, but we let him hang around here. He ain't all that bad. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
I know exactly where Burkittsville is. Ya just can't blink in town or you will miss it. I lived there one year and the year before i lived over the hill on the west side.
I got invited to a Civil War battle but the yanks didn't want me once they found I was invited. For some reason they didn't think a reall back woods yankk was suitable, so I went as a sole Mosby's Boy, and took a whole camp of yanks with out a shot. They found out it was a big mistake.
By the time i was ready to take them down off the moutain and hand em over they didn't have any more coffee or sugar.
I did have one chestnut late war guy with me which was handy, and a horse which was better than handy.
Everything i had almost was borrowed, all but one colt 44 and a hat LOL

Dan (and anybody else actually),
If you need encouragement, I recommend reading the "Letters of Appreciation" (along the left side of the PGR homepage). I joined the PGR specifically to counter the wackos from the Westboro church but was repeatedly rendered speechless (literally) when grieving family members would take time to thank us for being there--even when there had been no chance of the wackos.
Every so often, I catch up with the letters and have yet to get through a reading session without tears running down my cheeks. That such a simple gesture of holding a flag for a couple hours can have such a positive impact touches something very deep inside me. This IS a good thing we do.
If you have any specific questions, pm me.

Bob, I just completed my first PGR mission last Friday. What a privilege! I'm limited because of my work schedule, but I'll do as many as I can. It's my small way to pay homage to people who serve and keep us free.
God bless our Veterans!

Welcome fellow firefighter and Nomad rider. I too used to worry about sounding stupid when asking questions are posting on here, but this is a great group of people who have a wide range of knowledge to tap into. Occasionally you may get some "ribbing" but there is always some one that has a answer to any questions. I have had a few different type bikes and have joined may forum groups, but this sight has the best group of people of them all.
