In another thread I mentioned how I had removed my tourpak and added a solo rack and relocated my radio antenna. Here's pictures of the finished product:
http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad358/cjack_1/33/P1010375_RSZ_010.jpg
I'm really pleased with how nice a solo rack designed for a Harley Sportster looks on the Nomad:
http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad358/cjack_1/33/P1010368_RSZ_003.jpg
I used a mirror mount AM/FM antenna designed for truckers and mounted it on the spreader bar between the saddlebags. Here's a more detailed picture of how the antenna is mounted:
http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad358/cjack_1/33/P1010369_RSZ_004.jpg
I can switch back and install the tourpak in about 30 minutes. I just wanted a different look for the time being.

Looks good Scott and good picture of you on the back of the left saddlebag. You should have bought two of the mounts and antennas and then you could have had duels. Just a thought.

Nice job Scott. That is where I mounted my antenna except mine is on the right side. Seemed like the best place to use a mirror mount clamp. Once I got the antenna tuned and all of the connections tight it works great.

It's a Reckless fairing from www.recklessmotorcycles.com (http://www.recklessmotorcycles.com). I've posted tons of pictures of it here since last May when I installed it.

Pull weeds, rake the rocks and trim the vegetation a couple times a year. Low maintenance yard.

Scott, the bike looks great. I have always thought the Nomad was the best looking bike when setup solo.
There are a couple of them in KawaNOW that I think are really great looking.
What was the reason for the change? I think I might have missed that. What's up?

I just wanted a different look, Greg. That's all. No hidden meaning or anything. My wife won't ride with me, so I didn't need the second seat. I'll put the tourpak back on when touring season rolls around again. I don't know, maybe changing the look up a bit will quench my thirst for a new bike for awhile. ::)
I will say the bike handles much differently without maybe 35-40 pounds of weight situated high above and behind the rear wheel.

It looks to me that if you remove the passenger floorboards, you need to put the two bolts back in? They appear to secure the plate that the rear saddlebag guards attach to.
If that's the case, I'll need to go pick up some shorter bolts.

That's cool http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif As mentioned... the Nomad looks its best in a solo format. Yours looks great. Nice touch with the rack.
I was wondering though... if you are not going to have a passenger, wouldn't it look good if the trunk could be moved forward when you put it back on the bike? I assume a re-design of the rack could bring the trunk forward some.
Personally, if that could be done, I think that would look really good. Maybe Wompus could work on that concept some?
Anyway CJ... just wondering if that wouldn't be an option for the next "mod" of the bike. ;)

Honestly, I don't care for the tourpack as a driver backrest. I have a T-bag that sits on the passenger seat between the armrests on the passenger backrest, so I plan to keep that space. It's either that or tow the trailer.

GL,
I like your thinking! That's exactly what I did with my Nomad and an older Bates trunk that I picked up on ebay. I had a local metal fabricating shop make a rack for me similar to the Wompus but a solo setup.
I want to make a "comfier" backrest for it; that will be one of my winter projects.
Have to confess I do like CJ's solo look without a seat or trunk on the back and have thought about going that way but I like the convenience of the lockable trunk on the bike all the time.

I do find I miss having the big tourpak on the back to haul things. I have a driver backrest with my Mustang seat and prefer that (it's adjustable) to having a fixed backrest like the tourpak would give me. Also, I think the wraparound armrests on my tourpak would be a bit bothersome. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
glwilson
11-08-2010, 07:55 PM
I hear you "Canuck" ;)
CJ; I am not sure you would need to keep the trunk's back-rest on it. Just use the mustang's back-rest; remove the trunks back-rest; and move the trunk forward -- that is unless there are holes in the trunk from the back-rest.
Just a thought...
Sometimes when I look at Nomads with trunks, it appears on some that the trunk "hangs-out" way too far out beyond the rear of the bike. It isn't with all of them, but some. I suppose it depends on the trunk and the mount used.

Scott, that looks very good! I like the look and did a similar thing soon after buying the Nomad and before the trunk came around to being. Way before the fairing. If I had a year round riding season like yours [and I might someday soon} I might remove the tour pak during the year. I would go one step further next time {if there is a next time} and remove the rear seat and make it solo.
