I have been wanting to convert my Nomad to a solo set up, since my wife rides her own bike. The thing holding me back is finding a luggage rack that fits.

So I went to a swap meet a couple of weeks ago, and found one that looked promising. I finally got around to making all the changes today.

The rack fit with no tweaking required. It has a single mount on either end. It bolts into the rear bolt for the front seat and the rear bolt hole for the passenger seat.

I'm attempting to post pics. We'll see how that goes http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Oh yeah, I was told that it was for a eighty something to 03 Harley sportster.

It looks good, I like the look of a solo bike, but I carry to much junk around to ever warrant having one.

Very nice.Is that a 1500 or 1600?I bought a solo rack from another forum member and it would fit a 1500 but decided not to attempt to adapt it to my 1600 due to having to make additional brackets for the front mounts.I decided it wouldn't look that good so I'm still looking. If your rack will fit a 1600 I could point my search toward Harley.

My guess is its a 1600 with the wide chrome fillers between the bags and the frame ?

I believe you are correct Redjay.I don't guess it would make any difference as long as the distance between the front seat mount and rear bolt are the same distance apart.

Yep, its a 1600.

I'll be carrying a lot of "junk" too. I'm not done with it. I have to figure out some kind of bag/trunk/whatever for when we are traveling.

Rode it today for the first time after removing the backrest. With my bad back, thats not going to happen often. Next thing will be the seat, either a Russell day-long or an Ultimate. Whichever one will require a backrest. I'm just concerned about the strength of the little 6mm bolt that holds the back of the seat and rack and backrest. Probably need to talk to lonnie at Grasshopper.

If you buy an aftermarket seat, get the driver backrest with it.

Thank you for posting this! I have been looking for a solo rack for some time, but never could get a definitive answer about what would fit. I'd like to be able to remove my tourpak on occasion and go with the solo look. I just ordered one of these racks myself. They fit 1985-2003 Sportsters, and are easily found online.

I'll just have to figure out how to mount my radio antenna without the tourpak.

CJ- Where did you end up ordering it from?

I found one on eBay for $32.85. I just searched "Sportster solo rack" and it gave me several that were for sale.

I'm glad I got it cheap, it's going to cost me at least that much to engineer a radio antenna relocation kit.

Glad to help. I knew that there were a few guys looking for a solution to the "rack" issue. You can't beat a $30 solution.

Of course I DID spend more than that on chrome hardware at Ace hardware for this and a few other needs http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I don't usually buy chrome, but metric stainless steel is expensive enough. I have probably spent a couple hundred dollars on that stuff with my various projects related to the Nomad.

I ordered and received the Ebay $32.85 Sportster rack and it is now installed.I had to bend the front mounting tab slightly to follow the fender curvature and elongate the front mounting hole about 1/8 inch to make everything line up.The chrome is good and it follows the fender curve fairly well.Even though the rack only uses two mounting bolts it feels very solid.I probably will never use it to carry anything but it does add a little bling if you go solo.

CJ a piece of flat stock with a 90 deg twist on the end and drill it to fit the top lic plate mounting screws might work. I have my J&M ant mounted that way and it has held for about 2yrs.
Thanks for your time
