I finally got around to installing my cartire today. I did it myself and it was quite a chore getting the new tire on the rim. With the very stiff sidewalls it was hard getting the bead over the rim, I finally got it on with my brothers help and thought it was all downhill from there. However the bead didn't want to seat properly for me, so after multiple attempts I took it to the tire shop to see what they could do. He had no better luck than I did, but after inflating it to 140 psi he finally got it to seat, I stood way back for that one! He said that once in a while you get a real stubborn one. I got it mounted on the bike but then it started raining so I'll have to try it tomorrow and see how it feels.

Putting that much pressure in a tire can't be good. I can't believe it was that hard to get it to seat. Maybe someone was trying to tell you something by it not wanting to seat.

Hey Ring, welcome to the darkside. I wonder if a little more soap would have helped get that tire seated?

Ring, sorry you had the seating problem. My Verdestein Quatrac seated at 60lbs. Different tire though.
Look forward to your report after you play with air pressure and get a few miles on it.

... I stood way back for that one! He said that once in a while you get a real stubborn one.
Safety glasses, a couple sprays of starter fluid, a long-stemmed, propane barbeque lighter, a "WHOOMPH!", a kick and it's seated. Lot's of videos on YouTube showing how it works.

We used lots of soap, and the rim was cleaned spotlessly. My home compressor only puts out 90psi, so I thought a few more psi at the tire shop might do it, it did finally after about ten attempts there.
I use the starting fluid method sometimes and so has the tire guy, but I only do that as a last resort or when Im in the woods on my ATV and need to get back to camp.
Even with the starting fluid I think this particular tire would have been a tough one to seat. Its on now, hopefully for a long time.

I misunderstood. I thought the tire wasn't sealing enough to initially seat. I didn't realize that it took that much to pop into the final seal after increasingly adding air.

I was hoping to get the season out of the old tire, it went bald on me, but when I seen a cord showing I figured Id better get it changed. You can see by the wearon the old tire that I spend a lot more time doing right hand turns. Quite a difference in size between them isn't there.

I also went darkside, but I'm still re-assembling from this weekend--just wanted to add a note since there was also a "Pledge" thread last week.

After getting the tire on the rim, I let it stand in the sun for about an hour. Then I put Pledge on the rim and the bead of the tire. Without anything other than the air hose, the tire caught enough so I could start inflating the tire without any other means--not my experience so far with tubeless!

It also seated the bead completely with less than 25 lbs. Did the Pledge make it easy? To me, Pledge is making a run on Seafoam as the greatest chemical concoction ever.

We had a few Labatts ourselves, we'll have to use them up soon before they freeze in the garage. The soda has already started freezing overnight here.
I havn't seen much of Sly either, perhaps he's hibernating already. ;)

I hoping to get at least 30k as a minimum. It looks like it should, it has a far deeper tread than any bike tire Ive ever installed.

I'm surprised only 30,000. What'd you do put a heavy duty cluch and started pulling hole shots. Anyway id doesn't seem like many miles for a car tire.

I wish we had more tire options than we do that have been proven.

You might be right, but why would you put a car tire on if you're not going to put miles on? You might as well stay with a motorcycle tire. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Even if we only get 30,000 miles out of it that is still 3 MC tires at the rate they wear out here on our roads.

Another reason for the tire, after changing to a CT I noticed the change in handling with cross winds in the plains. In other areas they talk about if you don't ride in the rain - you don't ride. Just change that to wind for us. A CT is much more stable than a MC tire for me. I just don't fight the wind as bad.

At first you have to put more force into the bars for turns, not much more but some. After a while you really don't notice it. I can take turns as fast as I did with a MC tire.

I rode it to work yesterday and it feels pretty good overall. First impression is that it rides very smooth. It will take a bit of getting used to and probably a few air pressure adjustments to find the sweet spot.
Going down a straight road the bike feels easy to stay upright, on corners I feel I have to push it just a little bit to get it to start turning, then it leans over no problem. I think this will get better over time as I adjust to it. So far Im glad I switched over and Im sure it will be almost unoticeable after a while.

Uneven pavement is where you'll notice the most difference. thats the only negative part of a car tire....

The opposite is true for coming out of a turn push down a little into a turn. Bike wants to come up out of a turn. Just a little different feel that you'll like more and more.

Yeah Brad, that's the only negative I can come up with too. A friend at work (Yamaha Tour Deluxe) informed me yesterday that he went to the "DarkSide". I had been talking to him about it for over a year now, and being the "VERY SAFETY" conscience orientated person he is, he went with a MC tire earlier this year and 5500 miles later, it was down to the cords. He decided to give a CT a try. He's only been riding it for 4 days now. Guess what question he asked me.................... "Why did I wait so long"? He and his wife both love it, and he said "it does everything better". That's when I told him that the only negative part of a car tire is un-even pavement. It's not bad if you know it, but if you've never experienced it, It'll make the hiney pucker and bite the seat. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

As an added bonus, I had my GPS on the bike today and checked my speed against the speedo reading. It improved the speedo error to within 2mph. At 40mph the GPS reads 38mph, at 70mph the GPS read 67-68mph. The new tire is five inches larger in circumference and about one inch larger in diameter.
