View Full Version : Stebel On !

09-27-2010, 08:42 PM
Just put the Stebel on my '07 1600. Never realized how puny the stock horn was until now. Everyone should put one on their bike. A definite plus for safety ! I am very pleased.

Yeah, I can't wait to turn a few heads. Should be as much fun as when my Dad put a cow horn on his car.

Good job Frank. Wasn't too bad huh?

Thanks, Mitch. Wasn't bad at all. The wiring harness made it a piece of cake. Thanks for your advice.

Had the stebel, It burned out on me because of a faulty relay! But good news is I am getting another. I think they are great for safety and just to scare the Hell out of someone when they bend down to have a look at the horn LOL

LOL . Yeah, I've already pulled that one on the dog. He left a deposit on the carport.

Stebel makes a number of different horns.
Look here http://www.best-price.com/search/landing/query/stebel+horn/s/google/koid/3832617727/gkaid/45365851/

I have this one http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh319/sentpacking/snh-02.jpg

There is also ones that look like this but go under other names. I've seen "Bad Boy", "Blaster". I've seen them in a sister store to Harbor Freight, that we have up here called "Princess Auto".

Like you guys I like mine and have had one for a few years now.

The only problem I've found with the Stebel is that its use is more often than not accompanied with high blood pressure, expletives and ruined underwear. It beats broken bones and road rash though.

I've found that I use my horn less now that I have the Stebel. It's so loud that I feel it's some what obnoxious so I only use it when it's really needed. But when in heavy traffic I always have my thumb over the button!

Also, it sounds like a big bus so when people hear it I think they may still over look the bike as they are looking for something a lot larger, but it does bring them out of what ever stupor they are in.

@ kowboy I have the same one as rickyboy. I bought mine from bikerhighway.com.

@ sin city stan LOL !! Yep, a Stebel will have that effect on people.

I went for a short ride after work today, and cut the Stebel loose a few times. The best was a guy heard it over his riding lawnmower. Bet he had to clean the seat. Seriously, I really do like this addition. Shoulda done it long ago.

I have used mine to get the attention of some drivers "thinking" about pulling out of a side street on me. They all stopped.

With the way the idiot drivers are driving these days, I have got to get one.

Gene, it really is a must ! Not that expensive, as motorcycle parts go, and very easy to install.

I run both. I can switch between stock and stock plus Stebel. That way I don't give the bicyclist a heart attack and possibly make them crash in front of me. Better in quiet zones also.

You make a good point. I never thought of that. Makes good sense.

not sure what people have for outlets but Princess Auto, our Harbor Freight has an exact copy of the Stebel horn like I have http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh319/sentpacking/snh-02.jpg for $29.00 made by Wolo??? and called it a "Bad Boy"

Rickyboy...Spliced into the ground line going into the original horn, ran a toggle switch up next to my fog light switch. When I cut the switch on, my Stebel is grounded so when I press the OEM horn button both horns sound, with the toggle off, only the original horn gets power.

Just received my Stebel tonight. I have a couple of questions:

Will this horn bolt right to an '08 Nomad, or is there some fabrication needed?

What's with this air intake elbow? The small instruction card says the intake air should be routed to come from a protected place by some flexible tubing. Funny...No flex tubing shipped with the horn. Can someone clue me in?

I purchased the pre-assembled wire harness and relay. Are there any good suggestions for proper routing?

Thanks for any help,
Doug

Hey, Doug. I have an '07, and I used the bracket for the stock horn. I just flipped it so bracket is elbowing out, not in as with the stock horn. I don't think any come with the tubing, but that can be found at your local hardware or auto parts store. In take elbow should be facing to the rear. You can use about a foot of tubing, and run by the frame, anchoring it with plastic ties. I believe someone posted a picture of how they did this somewhere in this thread. Good luck. It's not hard at all. If I can do it, I KNOW that you can.

This AM I came over a hill to find a flock of turkeys cross the road in front of me. The Steble did its job http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif

My stebel has been a life saver on more than one occasion. I've been in my lane, apparently in stealth mode, when started to come over. Hit that stebel and they magically jumped back into their own lane.

usranger74...I am sure that worked with turkeys. I would hate to try the horn with all these Canadian Geese around here. It might be better to hit the geese and hope for the best than try and ride through the results of them hearing the Stebel. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Last night I finished my Stebel install. I had a friend make me a stainless steel bracket...I wanted to tuck the horn in closer to engine. This is one loud horn...my Nomad sounds like a freight train now, I love it. It was well worth the effort and funds. Thanks for the all of the information in this thread which made the install easy!

My stock horn drowned in a rain storm...now my grandson has a louder bell on his tricycle than I have on my Nomad. I assume the Stebel comes with everything to install, relay, wires, etc. Does it mount to the original location, or do I need to modify the mounting location?

The horn comes with a 30amp relay. I purchased the optional wiring harness, which worked well for me. I purchased my horn and harness from bikerhiway.com
