Just in case someone is saying "Search! Dummy!", I did, and I couldn't find what I was looking for ::).

What I would like to know from the good folks here is ............
What kind of trunk with a back rest do you have and total cost? If I go this route I may get it painted at the local tech school. My wife went for a ride with me today, her first time on the Nomad. She likes the bike but wants more back support (and I want a trunk http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif), she finds the stock backrest to be to low. If you have pictures even better! Thank you :)

I did mine in stages. First I bought a Wompus rack and mounted a cheap Mutazu tourpak on it. The next year, I replaced the cheap tourpak with a Supertrunk III with wrap around backrest (~$700). I paid $200 to have it painted, around $65 for the luggage rack from JC Whitney, and have another $100 or so in lighting and wiring.

You have a very nice set-up! I take it you don't think much of Mutazu trunks? They are priced low, might be something I can afford :) Thanks for the reply :)

My wife also did not like the way the backrest fitted. She felt it was too low. I bought a used set of seats on ebay and experimented with cutting the seat down 1 1/2" and adding a gel insert to make up for the lost padding, did not work out exactly the way I wanted { I still have the cut down passenger pad if you are interested. It looks good but the added gel did not make up for the loss of padding enough to keep my wife from complaining}. So next I bought a used backrest and upright on ebay for $55. I did not want to mess up my stock setup in case this experiment did not work out either. I took the chrome back plate on the backrest that has the emblem on it, removed the emblem and attached it to the padded backrest. The top two holes I used pop rivets with washers on the inside of the pad, you have to remove the cover, remove the stock screws[they press out] glue the washers inside the backrest plastic plate, put the cover back on. Then you can use the pop rivets to attach the top two holes. The bottom two holes fit over the existing mounting screws. I then measured and drilled two new holes in the backplate on the upright and the chrome cover plate for the back of the upright. Bolted the pad on with just the lower two bolts in the new location. The black trim in the pics covering the top of the new backing plate is a piece of electrical cord glued on. The end result is the pad now angles a little more forward at the top and is a little over 1" higher up. My wife loves it now. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

No, the Mutazu was okay, but they are cheap. The main reason I got rid of it was because I wanted one with a larger capacity.

Side shot of the modified pad. Note the extra set of acorn nuts on the backrest, these are the lower mounting screws on the backrest pad. If you look close at the top of the round upright you can see the pop rivets pressed between the backrest pad and the round upright, where the flash bright spot is.

All you need to do this mod is an extra backplate, two pop rivets/washers and acron nuts.

I've been having my Mutazu for nearly 2 years. Only problem I've had is the latch broke which I replaced with a new one from Mutazu and I've replaced the lid seal twice, also from Mutazu. I built my support rack and had it chromed for $135. The Mutazu trunk in silver with the wraparound backrest and luggage rack was a little over $200. They don't compare to the Scootworks, Premeaux, or HD tourpacks in quality and size but they do serve the purpose well.

I went with the h/d trunk off the ultra I think I paid about 500$ used ,off of ebay. I got it painted on a trade deal so the price was right. The wompus rack I can't remember the price but it's the only way to mount a trunk imo. The ultra trunk has factory lights in it I put flashing led's in for the brake lights really shows up nicely, also the extra tail lights can't hurt.

I sorta did mine in stages too. First I bought a Wompus rack (~$155) a '89 Yamaha Venture trunk ($425) and paint (~$140). Did the painting myself, and had the backrest recovered ($25), so for around $745 I got this look.......

A little later I added the Premeux fairing, and I wanted speakers mounted on the trunk, so I got an HD Ultra Classic trunk off ebay ($425), already had the mounting rack and paint, bought a new HD wrap around backrest ($118) and a "57 Chevy "NOMAD" tailgate emblem ($20). So to mount the HD trunk, it cost me around $563.

I went with the Premeux trunk. Spendy (around $1500)....but comes factory painted and pin-striped with a luggage rack and wrap-around seat....including a nice chrome mounting bracket...and bolts on in 20 minutes! Love it!

Heres a place that sells the HD Tour Paks at the best prices Ive seen. Ive never dealt with them myself, but they seem to have a good selection.

Latus HD is alright. I have bought some things from them fairly recently. They are one of the bigger HD dealers with a big internet presence.

I got the Mutaza and mounted it for my backrest cost $135 shipped. Then sold the current rack and sissy pad for $100. Had the trunk, faring and side covers painted for $350. The HD outter faring with a Lee Sido mount was $225. So that makes the whole set up $610. I'm happy.

I went with an 84 yamaha trunk. I like the look but now wish that I'd held out for a second generation yamaha trunk like VulcanE had. It's a bit larger and I think looks better. With the initial ebay purchase and having it painted I'm out about $700 plus the Wompus rack. Don't get me wrong, I like the trunk but if I had it to do over again I'd go 2nd generation Yamaha.

I got a trunk off ebay. Overall, I put about $500 into it with paint, etc.

If you have patience, you can get a good trunk relatively cheap and if you're willing to work on it, can turn it into a good setup.

I also started out with the '84 Venture trunk and loved the way the trunk went with the saddlebags. As much as I liked the look of the Venture trunk it just didn't offer the room I wanted. But then I had the chance to pick up a great deal on an H.D. King Tour Pak at the same time the H.D. fairing became available to me. It has all the room I want and I think it looks pretty good on the Nomad. IMHO

I went with the Mutazu DB model, primarily for the cost but also, because I liked the style. I did some minor modifications to the lights to enable running lights and separate signal lights in each of the two taillights.

I think that overall it's a pretty decent trunk, good looks, acceptable quality (very good for the price) and, provides plenty of storage space. The only thing that I want to change on it, is to replace the stock backrest with the optional wrap around back rest.

After having seen and read the above posts and the amount of $$$ other riders have spent on their trunks, I'm even more pleased with the Mutazu DB which, in my opinion, is a real bargain.

there is a huge difference in price for sure between the Harley <s>King </s>tour pak and the Mutazu DB model. But for construction and durability I'll take the Harley or my old Venture trunk any day of the week. Too each their own though. Sometimes it's all about money, and if we can afford what we really want. If I hadn't got such a good deal on mine I'd still have the '84 Venture on my Nomad. Once again it was about the $$$.

I have Never seen one of these on this site but I put a 1983 Honda goldwing trunk on my 2005 nomad a couple of months ago. I bought it off of ebay at a cost of $57.00 shipped, I built my own mounting brackets, one solo and one for two up at a cost of $18.00 in material. I painted the the trunk myself, the black paint was automotive paint my neighbor had leftover from another project, I bought the silver paint (Volkswagen silver) at Checker Auto it matched really close. I have less than $100.00 in everything.
You can see picture of the trunk mounted, and brackets at:

Hey NyhtRyder, I just posted the question about where you've been and if you'd finished the trunk. I have been wondering how you made out with this trunk of yours. Have you been posting your progress during the project? Do you have any more pics of the stages of the project? I think it looks great ! My thoughts turn to the weight etc. Did you wrap it with something ? Or is it just painted? Tell me more about it.
Thanks

You guys have better jobs and more money than I do. I have a $40 dollar trunk from Sears (Givi look-alike). Had it on my 750, will be on the nomad this weekend. Takes care of a little extra storage and will give my son something to lean back on when I take him for rides - since it's padded. Guess I'll have to paint it though.
