Yup...I ran out of gas! I was riding in heavy head winds for a couple hrs or so, doing 125km(80mph) on average and getting not so great milage because of the winds. I had 3km(2 miles) to go for gas when she died. I leaned the bike over from side to side and she fired up again but would quit if I didn't keep leaning it over. I finally rolled into the gas station and she quit. It took 21.275L(5.3 gals.) to fill. Lucky for me it wasn't 5km(3 miles) away..I'd be pushing...Bdog :) ::)

I'll tell you what's lucky. That your wife wasn't on the back when you ran out. Trust me, I know. (Last summer riding in the upper midwest where they don't have gas stations every couple blocks like here in the heavily populated mid-Atlantic)

I found out recently that you run out of gas much sooner going up hill.
I know, this should be obvious but about the only hills where I live are the freeway overpasses.
So, I was coming home one day, short of time and low on gas. For the last three overpasses before home the engine would sputter until I was on the down hill side.

That is the reason I fill mine when I have less than 100 miles on the current tank of gas. I remember what it was like running out when I was a lot younger and the bike was a lot lighter. Not easy to push a 360 or 650 Honda. I don't even want to think about pushing the Nomad.

You run a risk of cooking the fuel pump running that low. It sticks up into the tank about 4 inches.
I would have gotten gas earlier if there were gas stations! Were I live, there are areas of up to 3hrs of riding without a gas station in sight, so I have to factor in hrs of operation, wind direction and get little fill ups here and there just to make a destination...its almost like a game unless you loose. So far I have never lost the game but this time I came the closest ever to pushing..Bdog

Same situation here when you get into northern Ontario.

Happened to me way back when and on my Honda 1100 Shadow -a bit easier to push which I did for about a mile.
I now follow the advise of no more than 100 - 120 miles and filler her up. Good butt brake anyway. Realize that is not always possible, I carry a 1 qt fuel bottle with gas - i dump it in about every so often and refill it. The guy I ride with most also carries such so between us, we have a 1/2 gal.
Headwind really knock the life out of mpgs too, doesn't it. I got 26mpg once going west across South Dakota. Gassed up just shy of 120 miles and couldn't have made much more. Glad yo made it to the gas station.

I learned also that they will sputter 2-3 more miles if you rock the bike around. I was luck and rolled up to the pumps.

I carry a siphon hose.It is the type that has a squeeze ball on it so you can pump the gas out if you can't siphon for some reason. You can get a little of your buddie's gas if you are riding with someone or maybe a kind motorist will stop and help.I also carry a 33 oz leak proof camp stove fuel bottle full of gas just in case.
What is the name of the town in Utaw when on I-70 going east the signe says last chance for gas next gas 200+?- miles. Any way had to buy a 2 Gallon gas can to make it. gas tank on that bike was only3.4 gal. When I, got home from that trip I, got a 1200 Gold Wing. The posts on here about gas stations being far apart reminded me of that trip.

I believe that would be Green River, UT. Next stop is only about 120 miles though. Living in the Southwest I pretty much plan gas stops on most trips of any length. If I get into a situation where we just take off on backroards as we did last June coming back through Colorado, I tend to stop whenever I see a gas station.

At our KawaNOW NCR rally, 01Nomad showed me what he carries in his saddle-bag...
It was an aluminum water bottle (that I have seen selling around here over the last year or so). It had a screw-on top and his was red.
He put gas in it for the occasion when you just simply underestimated where the next station was going to be. ;)
I thought it was a fairly safe canister to do something like that with, and was a good idea...
...just a thought bdog :)

Is the gas bottle rated for gasoline (vented, etc.?). Where did you buy it?
Green River UT. Will have to get map out and see for sure. AT 100 miles I look for easy same side of road gas and after 125 miles take anything I can get.

MSR camping stove bottles come in sizes that may 2 will get you some more miles. When in doubt I get gas any times I can no matter what the clock says.
