View Full Version : A real motorcycle?

A friend has not been on a bike in a number of years and s looking to ride again. He asked if he could take mine around the school parking lot since he has to pass a riding test, I agreed. He did so well I offered to let him take it down the road a ways back to his convenience store and I followed in his truck, a first time offer on my part. When we reached the store a fella, I don't know, told him he should buy a "real motorcycle", and since he saw my friend hand me the bike keys I figure it was obviously my bike. I did not figure he was sharp enough to realize he just insulted my scooter so I did not get upset. So I stated that he could buy a "real motorcycle" or a good one. The fella said he was talking about a "Harley", one octave drop in his voice. I told him I was too. He called me "one of those smart a..es" I grinned real big and strolled into the store. Some times they are such easy targets that I ALMOST feel bad poking at them. Bless their little hearts.
Thanks for your time

Watch out. THose "real motorcycles" are everywhere. I have nothing against Harleys but during my road trip this weekend, I saw well over 500 bikes and only 2 Vulcans and 1 Honda. Everything else was a Harley. Why would you want to be just like everyone else? It makes no sense.

I've heard those comments before and have occassionally been asked if mine was a Harley.
My response is pretty much always the same;
"I didn't buy a Harley because I wanted a bike with a more powerful motor".
I then follow up with, " the Kawasaki has a larger 104 cubic inch engine where as Harleys have a smaller and less powerful 96 cubic inches". Shuts them up every time! ;)

Back in April one of my clients stopped by and we got to talking about bikes. He has a Harley, but was really interested in the Nomad, so I took him out in the garage and showed it to him.
He ranted and raved how much better it seemed to be than his Harley. He asked me how much I paid for it and when I told him he said " Why didn't you buy a Harley, you could have gotten a used Harley for what you paid for the Nomad new".
I just looked at him for a minute, then he thought about what he said and said "Oh".
He is in love with the Harley image, even tho his seems to have a consistant string of problems and he admits the maintenance on it is costing him an arm and a leg to keep it running.

There's a reason that you see more Harley's on trailers than you do on the road.... personally, I'd like to RIDE my bike to where I'm trying to get to instead of pulling it off the trailer when I get there.

The last guy to rag on me about the Nomad was really funny. I was in the my liquor store at about 8 PM getting a beer order ready. This guy comes in and starts with "Who rides the Jap Crap Honda" I told him it was a Kaw and he started in on me about being a trucker an "American business man" and how the Mexican tomatoes were bringing an end to the world as we know it. I told him I also was a business man and he was standing in my business and it just so happened I had done 500 miles that day in a semi. He got pissed bought some imported liquor and went outside and started talking on his "American made" cell phone. Oh and the guy has no motorcycle.

I've owned 2 Harleys myself. Both were underpowered junk!
As a Patriot Rides I ride with all kinds of bikes but even there the Harley butt holes just won't shut up fpr one second... but I've found a way to really piss them off...
When these "Harley Yuppies" ask me why I don't ride a Harley I simply tell them, "Why would I want to ride a overpriced, under powered, antiquated dinosaur when I can ride the bike I traded my Harley in on and have a much better bike" ? The look on their face is priceless! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif ::)

When I was looking to buy a new bike I looked at all types. I love my nomad!!!!! It's what fit me the best. Everyone has there own likes and dislikes. As long you are riding on two wheels you will get a wave from me. :)
Those people with their H-D License plates on their Toyota truck, H-D T-shirt, and no motorcycle are usually the worst. Most people who actually ride (not just own) H-D's are fine.
Since I switched from the Nomad to the ST1300 I have found it interesting that Nomad riders, Goldwing riders, Royal Star/V-Star riders, and to be fair, some Harley riders wave as we meet on the road and act normally. But a number of Harley riders, and only Harley riders, have made a point of coming up beside me and reving their engine to show me how powerful their bike is, then opening theirs up to take off, or going what they think is bat out of hell fast out of a stop sign and glancing back to see how far they left me in the dust. I never race them or pass while they are doing this, what's the point, but I confess that I often have mirrored their acceleration so when the look back I am right there where I was before a normal spacing for the speed we are going behind them. Seems to tear their hearts out. I'm not sure why, didn't bother me when a sport tourer was faster than my Nomad, in fact I never even thought to try and race one. And surely they know Harley's aren't built for speed. They usually make a second attempt, and then slow down well below the speed limit and look the other way like the scenery suddenly got very interesting as I go out and around them doing the speed limit. Strange culture. I'm glad this group isn't part of it.

My Cousin in law got a Harley tattoo before he even knew how to ride, much less owned a Harley.
2 years later he bought his first bike - A Suzuki M50 - spent more than a used Sporty 1200 would cost.
He used to give me a hard time about not owning a "real bike" when I had a Kawa Ninja 500 and now my Triumph Sprint. He doesnt talk much about it now.
We have not told him we have a Harley now, but I keep telling my wife she needs to get a temp tattoo that says Suzuki, then ride in on her Harley. Tell him it was in solidarity of not being able to get a matching bike/tattoo.

No, I think it's because 10 Harleys are probably sold for every similar metric model. Plus, a lot of these are "midlife crisis bikes", a man wakes up one day, realizes he's never owned a Harley, and feels one is necessary to complete his life. He buys it, rides it once or twice, realizes it's dangerous or noisy, or something and then it sits in his garage, taking up space until his wife nags him enough that he sells it. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

It brings some Harly owners to tears when you point out that some 78% of their American made Motorcycles are actually manufactured outside the USA. Pisses them off to be shown that of that 78% some 80% is Jap. I just remind them that I no longer have to drag a magnet behind me to catch falling parts like I did when I rode Harley.

I have ridden a lot of different brands through the years. All were metric-bikes, so I am used to being "ribbed" by others... however, I own a HD and a Can Am Spyder now and the "ribbing" hasn't ceased one bit no matter what I ride. There is always someone around to say something about what I ride; or someone thinking they have found the "ride" that makes them different than anyone else.:lmao:

All were metric-bikes, so I am used to being "ribbed" by others... however, I own a HD and a Can Am Spyder now and the "ribbing" hasn't ceased one bit no matter what I ride. There is always someone around to say something about what I ride; or someone thinking they have found the "ride" that makes them different than anyone else.:lmao:
I consider it all fun-n-games when hassling someone about their ride... but at the end of the day it simply comes down to the fact we are "riding".
I tease you because you trailer your Harley and anyone who owns a spyder deserves to be heckled. :D I would never tease you because you own a Harley.

I have a 2011 Kawasaki Voyager.I own it because it is the best bike for the money .I could have a Harley but where I live it would cost me about 7000.00 at least for the same accessories mine has.10000 kms and has had oil change only.No problems .48 mpg ,and comfortable. You will always get the comments about metrics, but if you are happy with what you own that is all that counts.Read the article in the last cruiser magazine where the guy says he went to his friends motorcycle shop and there were 5 Harleys that were takin in trade. That never used to be.As he put it the bloom is slowly coming off Harleys rose.Nothing wrong with Harleys ,but you are paying for the name.Just ignore the guy!!!

Had a real biker tell me last fall when I stopped at a gas station on the way to work to get a real bike.... when I walk out of gas station his wont start I asked him if that was part of owning a real bike the real problems.... yes it was an hd. then have been building bikes for a hundred years and still have figured out how to engineer a starter that can acutally turn the dam motor over lol .

So this year at Thanksgiving my soon to be brother in law was talking about how he and his "club" do a lot of miles. How he loves to ride his Harley... funny thing is he also had to talk about how he and three other members of his "club" left town at 4 a.m. one Friday and returned at 8pm that Sunday doing just over 1800 miles. I was really impressed with the miles they put on.... right up until he started to talk about how his Toyota Truck got crappy mileage hauling 4 Harley's in the trailer!
:lmao: Ya I know someone like that, as many miles on the trailer as his bike. My Nomad likes being on the road much better than a trailer

When I bought my Vaquero last May, the previous owner had it serviced at a Harley shop. I met the shop owner, who was a way cool dude, when I went and picked up the bike after some minor adjustments before I rode it away. The owner happened to really love the look and the lines of my new ride, and he always looked forward to the next service date. Sadly, I wouldn't be able to get it serviced at his shop because I lived too far away. Instant trust with this guy though. This gets better - his body and paint guy offered to paint up something special for the bike because he also loved it and had a great paint scheme to let loose on it - I'll keep that in mind when I'm ready for new paint. A couple of Harley owners dropped in and, you couldn't make this up, they both said they were talking about switching over. This is where the shop owner burst out laughing because those two dudes were his longest standing Harley customers. One of them turned to him and seriously repeated that he was thinking of buying a Vulcan, while the other said he was only kidding, he would never switch. Bottom line is that even some Harley owners like the Vulcan line, because they RULE!!

Is there some place I can find this info out so i can tell my HD friends as i drive them to the mechanics shop to pick up their bike....again!!

I have always rode import bikes. I preached to my son about the reliability of imports. I helped him buy an import (Honda). He owed only $600 on his Honda and it was in pristine shape with only 10K on it. The Harley bug bit him. He traded his Honda for a Harley that was four years older and had 4K more miles on it and ended up in debt about $3500.00. He never had any problems with the Honda but the Harley has been in the repair shop twice in the last eight months and it is currently leaking oil all over my garage floor. With a Harley you pay for an image not quality.

Flew from Tucson to Denver and picked up our 2010 Voyager, then drove it home (1000 miles). A guy I work with who is a big Harley guy and lives in Denver told me if it was a Harley he'd have let me store it as his house and ship it to Tucson instead of having set aside several days and ride it home. It told him if it was Harley I'd have had to ship it, it'd never have made the trip non stop!

I had the bug to get one of the new indians. After testing them out I saw they are great motorcycles. The new Harleys look really nice too with the high out put 103 motors. But after watching the new comparison of the new Indian Chieftain and the HO Street Glide I realize they just dont have enough to get me to give up my Kawasaki.

I have a 2003 Z1000 with 142,000 miles on it (no, not a typo), I pick up my Vaquero on the 24th. I have ridden it hard from the day I bought it brand new (well, after the break in), and it looks like it. It is beat up on all sides. The only failure I have ever had that was not accident related was when the rear sprocket carrier grenaded. When ever I get mouth from some weekend warrior on a perfectly clean, every option available HD, the first question I have for them is "how many miles you have on that thing?" After that I usually ask them if they want to race...straight line, twisties, even long distance. "Pick somewhere in the US and I'll see you there". Why would I want to spend that kind of money on a 70 year old motor, when I can spend half of it and have a better performing bike that I can ride constantly and not have to take to the shop for work every few months.
I ride with a lot of people that ride a lot of different bike, many of them Harley, and the real riders never talk down to someone because of the brand of bike. In my circle, you will catch waaay more flak if you leave the scoot at home on a chilly or wet day.
Just my $.02
I get the flack all the time too about not owning a real motorcycle. Almost everyone I work with that has a bike has a Harley. A lot of them come to my shop for some one off items but I have a policy..no dickheads allowed..hence many don't get custom work done from me! I don't care what kind of bike one has..just ride it.

I haven't actually gotten any flack from anybody about my Nomad yet. Last long rode I was on we had two Harley's, an FJR, an Aprilla, and myself. The road king suffered an electrical problem 1/3 of the way in and had to get a roadside repair. No big, just stuff vibrating loose. Go figure. I figure my bike is just as comfortable and even more reliable with a much lower price tag than the HD. Although, the late model Street glide my buddy was on was pretty sweet. If I had that kind of disposable income, I would buy one, but I don't and the Nomad suits me just fine.

It's a stereotype based on the experiences of owning AMF harleys, I bet. The jokes go around on a lot of bike, like if a triumph isn't leaking oil, check it because it's probably out of oil, etc. Harley's made today are as reliable as any bike given proper maintenance like any other bike.

I was dead set to buy a used Road King last March. I hadn't ridden much in a few years since selling my 900 when my son was born. I usually ride with 4 or 5 Harley guys. Former co-workers and good buddies. They never give me flak about what I ride, one of them even gave me his deluxe enclosed hauler to pick my bike up in NY state. I go on poker runs with them and am constantly surrounded by Harley guys. Normally the only people who say anything to me about my bike not being a Harley are guys that don't own one. This is the same kind of thing when someone likes to talk crap about your sports team but doesn't have one of their own, they are just sad little trolls.
I had always admired the build quality of their bikes. I loved that it was a task to find plastic. They have Road Kings, a Heritage and Ultra Classic and I loved them. Unfortunately or fortunately, the Road King that I had my eye on just wasn't a good fit for me. I had to do too much modifying for it to fit my tall frame. It was a beautiful '07 with less than 15k miles on it for $12k.
I hadn't been following the new bike market because I knew my price range and was set on a Harley. Then the Vaquero was pointed out to me and I found the one in NY state. It was an '11 for $11.5k with less than 9k on the clock. Had the big 3 done, with KQR backrest, aux kit, driving lights and a taller shield. All in all I'm glad it didnt work out. I love having a radio and a fairing, and I'm glad to have a liquid cooled bike again. I was worried about still craving the fit and finish of the Harley, but I dont have any of the envy that I had previously. I still think Harleys are absolutely beautiful bikes and I wish my paint could be anywhere close to their quality of paint.

My best friend and the person I have logged the most miles next to rides a 2013 Road Glide. When I was poised to buy my 2012 Vaquero, I rode his, and nearly got the Glide. he also has a 2007 Road King, with, wait for it, right at 130,000 miles on it. I like to talk a little smack to my friends, but anyone who doesn't believe HD's have come a long way is very much mistaken. My biggest complaint about them had to do with their final assembly. The dealers actually expect to have the bikes back in the shop for some sort of warranty work within the first month after they are sold. Usually for sloppy work, loose steering bearings, random gaskets not placed correctly and leaking oil, those kinds of things. But over all, the twin cam motor has proven to be very reliable when properly maintained.

One of my favorite run ins happened in December. I ride year round, no matter the weather. There are times when my car is needed by one of my staff members, and my wife of course needs her van to take care of the kids, so I only have my bike. In December it was about 35 degrees outside, I was gassing up and a guy approached me and began to tell me how much he liked his HD better than my Vulcan. He proceeded to tell me I was not a real rider like him because I didn't ride an HD. I looked around and asked him where his bike was, to which he replied "in my garage", I smiled and said "so a real rider only rides when it's sunny out?" He walked away mumbling. Enjoy the ride, no matter what you ride.

A few years ago for the first time in History, more people are moving out then are moving into the state. So us native Californians just like think that's us giving paying back to the other 49 states for all the crap that they sent here in the first place.
Just because we live in the best weather state doesn't mean that we don't like the winter and all the winter sports just like the people in other states do. It's that we can drive about an hour to visit the winter and then go home.
As much as I love the weather, the state has gone rotten. When the wife retires we plan to move to another state. But don't worry it won't be yours.(too damm cold in the winter)

I did a local charity ride this past summer and had a Harley rider come up to me as soon as I parked my Nomad. He was all decked out in all the gear (probably spent 2 grand on the clothes). As I was standing next to the bike, he asked if it was mine. "Yea, it is." He then preceded to tell me that the '05 Nomad was the best bike he ever owned and he truly regretted trading it for a Harley when he fell to peer pressure. He went on and on about how great a ride it was and how much better he liked the Nomad than his current Harley. I asked him why he didn't revert back to the Nomad and his response... "I've got too much money invested in this Harley. My wife would kill me 'cause I'd take a huge loss financially."
I could only think, man, that's gotta suck. Gave me a really big smile when he walked back to his bike and his buddies. My wife and I walked around a bit looking at other bikes and when we got back to mine, his buddies were standing around mine checking it out. They were very complimentary. And, very inquisitive about the car tire. :D

As I was growing up, my two much older brothers both lived in CA. One in Orange County, the other in the Bay Area. My folks and I would take a road trip every year to see them. I thought CA was the greatest place on earth! I went to boot camp in San Diego and later was stationed at El Toro. This was in the late 70's and I still thought I was the luckiest guy alive to live in such a place. The point is... I would live in Prescott over anywhere I have been in AZ, and I have been there a lot over 25 years. You can most often, easily get out of Prescott and ride your bike in Phoenix (or elsewhere south). Some I know in Prescott store their bikes near Phoenix so they can drive down and ride when Prescott has snow and cold.

You are so very right on that; although occasionally my sister and brother say the wind can get nasty up there; which makes it sometimes pretty bad. But after this winter here in the Midwest, I am done with it.
We just now broke 1-degree above freezing for the first time since I can remember -- maybe all winter. I tell people, this year every snow-flake that hit the ground is still on the ground since nothing has ever thawed yet. Besides, I have never gone through a winter where the temps were consistently below zero, with it most times being -10 to -20 degrees.
It has just been nuts. With today's 33 degree high, I literally thought it felt warm Total BS... I am getting done with it...

I just celebrated 40 tears ridin skoots, dad brought that shiny 1973 Suzuki TS125 endure home in the back of his work truck in December 1973.
Since then I have always thought a "real motorcycle" had 2 wheels, an engine and all the other stuff to make it go. Regardless of brand name. I truly know those are the basic facts.
Those that want to label their skoot a "real motorcycle" or claim yours(mine) is not a real motorcycle is coming from ego and arrogance and opinion, not facts.
I feel and will always feel sad for them, real sad.

Let me make an exact clarification of what I said so not to confuse anyone any further.
Of all the HD riders that I have encountered, the majority are d!cks. Yes, there are some really cool HD owners out there, just like there are some real a-hole metric riders, but considering this WHOLE post started over a slam of a metric bike, I added my two cents.

The problem here is NOT WITH THE MOTORCYCLE!!! It is always a problem with the MOTORCYCLIST!!
In all my years ridin and being where there are more than one skoot parked, you NEVER see or hear skoots bickering amongst each other. They sit in silent respect for their fellow skoot. I have seen rat bikes parked next to beautifully customized skoots and they are friends. No snobbery, ego, arrogance being shown or displayed.
Then the humans step in and it can all go to hell.
I have always said it's not the skoot that is the problem, it's the ass sitting on the seat.

My last bike was my first and last harley I'll ever own. It was an 08 with less than 5k miles, fuel injected and all that... still managed to stall itself out when I would start it (bone stock from day one).. Handled horribly and rode like crap, but it was a nightster which is kind of a base model so I can't expect the world..But what's funny is I got the nomad for cheaper, with less miles.
Despite this, I still get heat about not riding a real motorcycle constantly. :yep:
At least it makes it easy to pick out the people who really ride. The last thing I'd want is something everyone else has as well, and to pay out the butt for it.

Up's and Down's..Good And Bad
I know a guy (Steve Ritchie) ..of Pin Ball design fame (GOOGLE Him)
A couple years ago, he was offered a position with a large design corp. in Chicago.
So moved up there from Hollister California
Where these days he's doing well and doing what he enjoys for a mighty good income...
But every few weeks he sends an e-mail talking about the cold weather-traffic and flat lands of the area...and how much he misses motorcycling the coast range and the twisty two-lanes of central Calif
And here I sit...right in all he misses...and even with my -extensive experience- I cant find a job that pays anything close to a living wage ! (I'm glad I'm "semi-retired..and only work on a contract basis)
(..then of course it was the decline of real work in Calif that was why he moved)...
As soon as I recover from my annual case of the flu..I'll go for a nice ride..and send Steve an e-mail and a couple photo's...just to needle him ! ">)

I wonder how his wife feels about the move? I am in that position as we moved to AZ for my wife's job. I don't hate it here, just wish I could find permanent employment at a decent wage. Seems everything is contract and the pay scale needs some help. It's always something. If Moses made a right, the jews would have had all the oil. What's the old saying? Possession is 9/10ths of the law?
I don't like paying for the same real estate twice and that extends to mistakes. The good thing about getting around the birthday cake a few more times is that I start to recognize some mistakes before it's too late. Now I have to get to the point where I don't make mistakes at all. Still learning I guess. The truth is, everything is a pattern of some sort and recognizing them is half the battle.

That article is a bit misleading because the vast majority of the so called reliability issues were minor things not engine or clutch. Added to that is the fact that Harley sells Electra glides, Street glides and BMW w the GSA and GTL bikes have a ton of stuff that can go wrong compared to a much simpler sport bike.

BMWs have more that can go wrong, but there are common enough problems with some things that at least I would think they wouldn't have them to begin with or nip them in the bud quickly. My advice to anyone that wants to buy a BMW to get a model that has been out for at least 3 years. HD is more of a simple bike or at least no more complicated than most touring rigs. The 2014 adds some complexity, but it's still not cutting edge. It's not intended to be.

Hey CactusJack, my apologies if I offended you. My comments merely echoed similar sentiments expressed in this thread (and IMO are far less insulting than some of those I read). I am a motorcyclist first and foremost, owning and riding over 40 years. My current scoot is a Nomad besides two others in the garage. My riding mates cover the gamut from crotch rockets to full dressers, including HDs - we like to ride and if we express "brand loyalty" it is always in fun. If on the other hand I offended you because I am an FNG with "only" two posts then disregard what I just said....I guessI will always be an FNG to your 19k posts. Rich, Scott gets offended easily at times:bs:. We have had a number of new members who came on here and wondered why someone such as Scott (originally owned a Nomad) who rides a HD is still here at a Kawi Bagger site. Well, I've known Scott since basically the start of the forum and have had the pleasure to shake his hand for 5 years now.
The HD mentality is one that you do see. If someone has that mentality they definitely wouldn't still be here harassing us Kawi Bagger riders. It has been the friendships developed here that are the reason many stay here. Scott is one here that did a bunch of work to his Nomad to make it what he wanted. When he wrecked it, he decided to buy what he had built it into since Kawi didn't have anything close to what he wanted.
Best thing you can do is plan on hitting a rally as soon as you can this summer. The North Central Region is planning on a rally in June that is based in Arkansas. First of all...I love the 1st ammendment to the US Constitution..giving us ALL the chance(RIGHT) to speak up and insult anyone that may take offense..(tho I'm a sensitive sort..and try to be good to all differing opinions...(however in my "senior years" I have become -less- polite to that tribe of top floaters that now own all our info/entertaiment outlets, and who have maneuvered to re-set the Constitutional protections to cover --just themselves !
As for Big KAWK's Standing Out in a crowd...My big brother was building an Old School 62 Ford Falcon Street Rod...one winter down in Canon~City, Colo..went in a local part's house/snow mobile dearlership for something...and saw a 2002 Kawk DRIFTER sitting there...among several other types of bikes for sale...
A customer had just traded it in on two snow machines so he and his wife could go snow-slammin .....

There is no direct correlation between engine displacement (cu in/cc) and power output (hp/torque). In other words, one can't derive the horsepower merely from knowing the displacement of a given engine.

As it appear's.. 1500 = 95CuIn, is a "translation/conversion" of the 1500 cc, into 95 Cubic Inches..and not intended to indicate a Horse Power output ! ?
A "horsepower Calculation" requires the cly head combustion chamber area..number of "power strokes" per minute,(RPM) Lbs of fuel burned per ignition event/per stroke
..dang I could go out to the garage and get my "Aircraft power plant Engineering info...
on the other hand i'm sure there are some -younger minds- all full of fresh training/knowledge..on here somewhere that will jump in with the correct math formula !

That's right. There is no correlation between displacement and horsepower if the only known variable is the displacement. One liter = 61 cubic inches, so a Vulcan 1600 is actually 1552 cc's or 1.552 liters therefore 1.552 * 61 = 94.67 cubic inches.

+1...case in point...My 1500cc Nomad had about 70hp....my 1300cc Honda has 125HP
