TC, you are going to be proud of me...

I attended the monthly meeting of the Vulcan Riders Association, Chapter 1-15 (Phoenix Vulcan Riders) this morning. Each month, they hold the meeting at one of our sponsors. Today it was held at The Helmet Center http://thehelmetcenter.com in Peoria, NW of Phoenix.

As most of you may know, I am partial to half helmets. Mostly because I haven't found a comfortable full face helmet. Well, I tried the HJC IS-33 on, which is a very nice helmet, but the cheekpads were just too tight for me, even in the largest size (XXL). It was a 3/4 helmet with a full faceshield and a hidden, drop down tinted visor. I have been wanting one, but never had the chance to try one until today.

Disappointed, I tried on a number of other helmets in the store and then I found the HJC IS-MAXBT, a modular helmet with the same hidden, drop down tinted shield as the IS-33. I tried on a XXXL, and it actually fit and didn't squish my face. The store owner made me a real good deal, list price was $215 and he gave me the VRA discount and it came out to $169.95. SOLD!!

I'm not going to throw away my half helmets. I still like them and plan to wear them. Honestly, a half helmet is no fun in the rain or when it's cold, so that's the main reason I wanted a full faceshield. The fact that it's a modular, full face helmet is just icing on the cake.

Anyway, here I am at home, sporting my new IS-MAX-BT helmet in matte black:

Nice brain bucket I particularly like the way it covers your most of your face making the world a more beautiful place. Seriously it is a nice helmet at a nice price. I mostly wear open face helmets and half helmets but have been thinking about a full face for the cool days.

Great! now i know what you look like!!

Scott's looks remind me a little like melancholy:

Head like a melon, face like a collie!! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Seriously Scott I want to buy that helmet but my melon size head had the same issues with the XXL did didn't fit you. Same issue. I will def look into the one you got. How quiet is it on the highway? Wind noise? road noise?

Since I am used to wearing half helmets, I'm used to road/wind noise, but the new helmet seemed pretty quiet. I can still hear my stereo just fine, too.

The IS-33 only went up to XXL, the IS-MAX goes up to XXXL. I almost bought the IS-MAX in XXL, it fit me a lot better than the IS-33, but the XXXL was just a bit more comfortable. I'm going to get a tinted outer shield for it real soon.

Thanks for covering up. FF is nice in the winter. I have an Arai and it is great but if it ever needs replacement I will look into modular. Sometimes I just need more air and it is a pain to stop and switch. Too long in the FF and my ears start to hurt. It doesn't help that I wear glasses and slip over shades so the visor thing would be a plus.

Nice looking helmet Scott. If you had bought the IS-33 it would probably have gotten better with a little time. When I bought mine I had the same problem with the cheekpads. It does conform to your head. Now it is the most comfortable helmet I have ever used.

I don't think it would ever been comfortable. It was tight to the point of being painful. They are both nice helmets, the IS-33 just wasn't a good fit.

Maybe my face just conformed to the helmet. It was sort of painful for a couple of weeks and I thought of switching back to my half helmet. But now everything feels fine and is the most comfortable I have ever ridden with. Glad you are satisfied with the HJC you purchased. It will get more comfortable with time also.

Nice lid. I recently bought a Scorpion EXO 900 modular, primarily to have a full face to wear in the winter. I havent gotten used to the closed in feeling but the Scorpion is convertible to a 3/4 by removing the flip up "jaw" and visor and installing a shroud visor in its place. The flight helmet drop down visor is handy for riding into the sun when my sunglasses dont quite cut enough glare.
