View Full Version : Inspection and New Front Tire
Our legislators in NC have, in their infinite un-wisdom, made it necessary to have a state inspection done in order to renew your tag. Well since mine was a bit over due, let's speculate a couple months, I went in to have the inspection done.
Here's the bad news... The front ME880 was just barely too low on tread to pass....so I had to put a new one on. They had another ME880 in stock so we stuck it on. 12k miles and but for the inspection I would have gotten a couple k's more.
The good news.....The Dunlop E3 on the rear that I put on just prior to Custer last year had plenty of tread on it, though it is starting to flatten out in the center......over 10K miles on it but the first 5k was to and from Custer riding straight up with only a rider.. I figure I have 3000 more in it before its time to replace.
Now....let the tire debate begin.. ::) ::)

I guess Im fortunate that there is no yearly inspection here, its bad enough the car and truck have to go for a driveclean test every second year, thats just a tax grab.
It doesn't surprise me that your ME880 wore out sooner, Im finding I get a let better wear from the Dunlops as well.

We have yearly inspection here also.
My Me 880 wore out at 10,000 miles
My Dunlop E3 picked up a six penny nail at 10,000 but I think it would have gone another 3,000. It was noisey as hell though.
My last Cobra went 12,000. We will see how far my new one goes. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif After talking to Flavor at the Northeastern Rally I may have a car tire in the future.

I like spirited riding sometimes. So I'm wondering how good are these car/truck tires in the corners? Presently I have ME880's.

ME880's suck! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
A car tire is no different in the "spirited riding zones" than a bike tire.

Loafer, I would agree with CJ on that as well.

We have required annual state inspections here for bikes also. LEO rarely check riders here, but if they do and it isn't up to date it will cost $175 in fines. It's much cheaper to pay the $10 every year for the MVI. Easy to forget it because it isn't required to be displayed. It just needs to be with the registration and proof of insurance.

So I have read on several posts about having to get "used" to a car tire but once you do you'll love it what do they mean ?
If they will blast into hard corners as good as a MC tire? what is there to get used to?

The Ct feels a little different, but once you get that feel it is something you will never again want a mc rear again. I got 9,000 miles on mine and 7/32 tread left to go. If i was on any mc rear I wouid be on a new tire numba 3 now.

Yes, they said it was waaay to wide to be safe :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
I had to deal with the N.C. inspectors as well. Couldn't renew my tags without the inspection, but my Nomad resides in Oregon. Talked with three different folks at NC highway patrol and they all seemed a bit confused. They wanted to know 'why' my bike is in Oregon. Well...because that's where I keep it, is that a problem? Finally, I had to have the bike taken to a dealer in Oregon and they had to confirm the bike was indeed in Oregon..they didn't need to inspect it, just verify it was in Oregon. Isn't government wonderful? Not sure if they will give me another pass for 2011 or not.

Alabama is behind the times. We don't have any type of inspection. The bad news is, I see a lot of cars that I would not allow on the road. I don't feel safe any time I am near one of those. The good news is I don't have to pay to get an annual inspection.
In defense of the ME880's, I've got 12K on mine and the rear is within 1/32 of needing replacing and the front probably 3/32. So, 12K isn't so bad for MC tires, especially the rear? Or I am missing something? I never got those kind of miles on my Dunlops. I'll change them both out next month and for now am planning on another set of the Metzler's.

I had really bad luck with ME880's. You couldn't give me a set. If you like them, then that's all that matters.

I haven't had any problems with the ME880's. I think they are better than the BS that came with it. What does CJ use? And why are they superior?
I am happy with what the ME880 did on the front of mine...12K. I don't know that you could ask for more. Now the ME880 I had on the rear only lasted about 7500. Thats why I changed it to a Dunlop Elite 3. A lot of my riding is 2up though.

I have 19,000 kms on my rear Cobra and it looks good for about another 5,000 kms ?
The front Cobra has 22,000 kms on it. It has half its original tread left but it is starting to get a little squirelly on the road snakes. Most of my riding is 2 up but no too many twisties here in southern Ontario. I am hoping to get the rest of the season out of the tires and get new ones in the Spring.

This would be an interesting problem in NH. Here we register then have to wait till the month of June to get inspected. My reggi runs out Nov 30th and I lapse it till Spring, since I prefer my money in my pocket. So if this law set were in NH I couldn't ride the bike to get inspected and then register. This is odd man out in NH as only bikes are inspected in the sole month of June.
All other vehicals are inspected in a birthday month.
Why bikes must be registered for a full year in NH just makes no sence. A matter of Greed i suppose.
...........................................
I just got sick of wearing out mc rears in 7,000 miles no matter what brand they were. In NH just dubbin around over parts of weeks and 3 weekends I can log on that many miles, and replacing a rear tire that often in a summer season to me is nuts. That could be 3 rear tires a season.
We have inspections in Virginia and I feel it's a good thing. Keeps a lot of ramblin wrecks off the road. My Bridgestone rear factory tire has just under 10K and it starting to look a little sad, I plan on putting anything on it but a Bridegstone and won't put a tire made in China on it. Hopefully I can find one.

LOL Really isn't everything 'Made in China' these days.
FYI all...no inspections in Tennessee...we're too redneck. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

CJ currently has a Dunlop SP5000 car tire on the rear and a Dunlop D404 on the front. I've used Avon Cobras and a Dunlop E3 on the front and they have all gone several thousand miles farther than the ME880.
The ME880's just didn't last very long and the front cupped severely. Maybe it's the heat here, I don't know.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to try this next changeover.
