Coming home this evening as I was turning into our gravel driveway there was a low spot just before a culvert at the entrance. As my back tire hit the low spot I heard the clunk as I bottomed out on the stone culvert. I knew I hit hard but continued up the driveway and came to a stop at the entrance to the garage. As I let down the side stand I hit the kill switch about the time I saw the oil pouring out. It appeared that I had about 1 and 1/2 to 2 quarts pour out in front of the garage. I saw the hole where the oil plug was and I walked back down and found the oil plug in the pictures. (This is the one on the left side where the screen is.) I still have to remove a piece that is broken off in the engine but it appears that is all the damage. :-/ If there is no other damage I will feel fortunate. :)

Man that is a bummer. I can't believe that happened. Guess that is a once in a lifetime thing. It had to hit just right to do that.

That's a new one on me. Good thing it happened in your driveway and not on the highway somewhere.

I lost the oil drain plug in an old bike I had just as I was coming into Las Vegas a long time ago. Back tire started to slip and I looked down and saw oil all over the ground.

I'm sure you thought of this already but, You might want to make sure you have all of the pieces of the plug and nothing stayed in the crankcase. Try pieceing together the larger pieces to make sure that everyting fell out. I would then flush the crankcase really well with diesel more than once before starting the engine. I wouldn't go very far before changing the oil and looking for pieces in the screen. Just my thoughts.

Dang, whats the odds of that happening? Glad it is only the plug and the the case, do as Mitch instructed and flush some diesel in the engine to make sure there isn't any small pieces left behind.

I was able to get the piece out today and re-assemble most but there are some pieces of the part missing. I will do a flush but I expect that most of any small pieces came out due to the location. The screen and the washer and spring were undamaged and held in place by the remaining part of the plug. I looked over the case closely and I can not see a scratch on the case. It still strikes me oddly that it hit in the location it did. ::) The part is on order.

Hitting the crankcase would have been a lot worse, you got off real easy. Now go fix your driveway so it doesn't happen again.

If the screen was still in place then there shouldn't be any pieces in the engine.

I bottomed out on a ride recently and didn't realize until the next day, that I crushed the oil filter.

Thank God no other damage was done.

My Nomad will bottom out and hit the oil drain plug when I load it on my trailer. It is a 5x10 dove tail trailer with a 4 foot fold down ramp. (I found the damaged oil drain plug when changing the oi)l. I have learned I need to jack the front of the trailer up a few inches, so as not to scrape the bottom of the motor.

The plug is made out of cast so it's not that sturdy to begin with. 3 months Brian broke his, pretty much looked like your pic, when screwing it back in. He put a bit to much pressure on it and it snapped off in his hand; figures it was cracked to begin with and broke 2 of the arms off.
