A couple of days ago, I was headed to work and this lady in a red doulie, big ass pick-up truck, and ON HER CELL PHONE, decided to come right over into my lane. So I laid on that beautiful Stebel horn and she suddenly woke up and moved back over. So if you don't think your horn is important, think again. It saved my ass!

Not surprising to hear that the Stebel saved another rider. It's always good to read about bad situations that turned out for the best.

Wow, glad that turned out OK for you SWB.
I have a Stebel but so far haven't had to use it. Hope I never have to.

Glad that situation turned out like it did. Stebel to the rescue.
I suspect that many of us, myself included, have had a similar experience and thank God for the Stebel....

With all respect for both the Stebel horn and the opinions about it's effect in tricky situations
I just don't think a loud horn has much use.
I had various loud horns on many former bikes and use to use them as well.
Average reaction was increased irritation and refusal to clear the road as intended.
I found it's better to use the high beam and the throttle.
Currently I use the stock peepppp horn..just to hear it's sound just once at a parking place.
So..I would'nt rely on any horn, just preventive riding and passing speed.
Might save you some bucks as well.
Sorry..just my opinion, but based upon experience.

There are times when acceleration and preventive riding (and driving) are keys to avoiding sticky situations just as grabbing lots of brakes can as well. There are also times where all you have time for is hitting the horn button because the other options may be too late. I would rather spend the bucks on a loud horn and never use it than need a loud horn and not be heard.

I always test the Stebel horn just to know its working every ride. You never know when it will be needed. My OEM horn quit.

That's a good point. How many of us actually test our horn, stebel or stock, before each ride? I know I don't think to.
On another point, when are people going to wake up. Cell phone use while driving is dangerous. We have a law against it here, but that does not seem to stop people. If I can spot them ahead of time and often you can, either through erratic driving or seeing their hand up to their ear, I stay far away.

Once you start looking at drivers, it's sickening at the amount of them on the phone, non-hands-free. I travel in the extreme left lane(HOV lane) and it is scary to realize how many are on the phone. Now, if they are on speaker phone or bluetooth, I figure they are just crazy and talking to themselves......either way I avoid them and drive defensively and like I'm invisible.

They are..dangerous driving is everyday reality here.
This last month 5 motorcyclists were killed on the road around my hometown alone.
Not to mention the rest of the country.
And Holland is just a SMALL country.
I'm affraid Americans have NO idea what living in todays Europe is about.
It's like your wild west 200 years ago..on the road as well as in every day existence.
You don't want to live here.

That's indeed a good point.
But..what to think about the very popular navigators?
How can one concentrate on the road when using them?
After all..one can do only one thing right at the time.

I do, as soon as I ride out of my neighborhood. I give the Stebel a beep to make sure it's working.

I don't use my horn to clear the road. I use it to wake up the idiot in the Honda Civic who tries to change lanes on top of me.

The horn is not going to take care of ALL situations but it sure helps most. if your counting on accerlation to get out of sticky situations on a Nomad it wont happen most of the time. :-)

I do, as soon as I ride out of my neighborhood. I give the Stebel a beep to make sure it's working.
I usually test mine also after leaving the neighborhood and out on the nearby rural roads.
I'm going to have to get a horn that can be heard. This morning out in town traffic I had two drivers try to violate the rules of physics within just a few blocks. First one was a male in a small car the second a female on her cell phone in a big SUV.
In both cases cranial rectal immersion was the culprit.

I have seriously considered adding a second stebel to my bike, because some times it seems like you can't get enough noise to get some ones attention.
I drive defensively, but if you are crowded against a rail or retaining wall with no where to go, noise is your only option when some ass hat decides they want your space and you are blocked in.

They've passed a law here in El Paso, no cell phone use while driving. Problem is, still see most everyone using them while driving and not paying much attention to anything around them.
Cell phone chatting is big in Germany even though it is against the law. What they need to do is increase the fine to about $500 plus for a first offense and then the idiots will take notice. No pain, no gain. All most met my maker today - idiot began a left turn from the right lane..glad I had new brakes and tires on the bike or I would be road kill. Didn't have time to use the horn at all...just brakes and sweat. Beware, they are everywhere.

From my experience, Honda Civics seem be easily awakened shortly after they have maneuvered 'you' into 'their' blind spot. At this point I look to find the occupant distracted by the phone and a good pull on the Stebel brings them back to consciousness. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I ordered my Stebel yesterday. I can't wait to get it installed. Hopefully the only test it'll get is to make sure it works...fat chance of that with the way people drive around here.

One thing my time as a trucker has taught me is to always do a proper pre-trip, checking all lights, horn, brakes etc. I too check the horn after I am clear of my open header dragster tolerating neighbors. I don't want to push my luck. Illinois has a law against texting while driving once again it has no effect on some. I still wonder if that dang left turning kid that I T-boned in 2007 was on his phone, I'll never know.

I started using Stebel about 3 years ago. At least 4 times, it has prevented a potentially ugly situation with a car moving into my lane. 3 individuals were on cells; the fourth looked genuinely apologetic, as if he had had a momentary brain fart.
I commute regularly and try not to ride directly adjacent to another vehicle, but sometimes I just can't avoid it. In those 4 cases, the Stebel woke people up to the fact that something was near them and objecting to the lange change they were attempting.
I never use the Stebel to inform the dipwad in front of me that if he/she wants to go the posted speed limit, move out of the fast lane to do that. I use high beam flickers for that communication.
