After 6500 miles I see my OEM Stone is down below the wear-bar already. So, since I don't need a new front tire, and I really don't want another Bridgestone that only lasts 6k miles, can I mix brands safely?

Hmmm, car tire? Maybe that is the answer. No way I'm buying a new tire every year for this damn bike.

my rear bridgestone wore out in 6300 miles and i replaced it with
a dunlop e-3 bias tire in 160/80-16 size.the dunlop now has 5000
miles on it and it is showing very little sign of wear.i fully expect
this tire to last well over 10,000 miles.

If you run a CT you will die............................. someday, but you will die someday anyway.

I am the fuzzy one.
Mix brands sure! Just can't run a bias rear and a radial ft. That is about the only rule.
You can run a radial rear and a bias ft, you can run a bias rear and ft and you can run a radila rear and ft., just not a radil rear and bias ft.

I recently replaced my rear tire at 9523 miles with the Dunlop Elite 3 radial. Still have the original Bridgestone on the front. No problem whatsoever.

I know this can get alot of input and preferences, but I'll ask anyways:
1). If you use a car tire for the rear, what kind and what size? Are there any modifications required to the bike?
2). If not a car tire, what is a good MC tire, besides the Dunlop e3?
I have 10.2k miles on my original tires since I bought the bike new and they're worn down.
Based on what I've been reading here, 8 to 10k miles is the norm for tire replacement?
Thanks
Ken

No offense meant Ken but there's so much written here about car tires that you should check it out... You won't be able to search Car Tire because Trips gasoline powered internet site wont let you search 3 letter words. Try the work "Darkside".

So, let me see if i get this. The only rule is don't run a Bias rear and Radial front. And...not a radial rear and bias front? ;)

No offense taken, and thank you. Found the site and info. That gas powered Internet site was just a sputtering. lol
Replied to some of the threads there with questions.

I went ahead and ordered new tires. I opted for the Avon Cobras since so many people here speak so highly of them. Thought about a car tire, but i just can't see how it would track as good as a M/C tire in the twisties. Plus, I never keep a vehicle too long, so I don't need the tire to last 30,000 miles. :) Anyway, I found the cobras online for $282 shipped to my door. Hope I like them.

I ran a Avon Cobra Radial and a stock Bridgestone on the rear for 3,000 kms with no issues.
I never ran that combination in the rain though. I am not recommending that tire combination, just saying I did it with no issues. Why did I do it ? I had lots of life left in my rear tire and I was convinced it was my front tire that was making lots of noise. I changed the front to a radial and the noise was still there. After the rear was changed to a Cobra the noise was gone.
I now have 20,000 kms on the front Cobra and 17,000 kms on the rear Cobra.

Update:
Just a shout out the Rocky Mountain ATV. Easy website to order on. They shipped free and I got my Cobras in 4 days. Both tires were manufactured in 2009 Front in the 19th week and the rear in the 42nd week. Good news since the last time I bought online, I got 5 year old Metzelers that failed in 6 months. Anyone looking for tires, should check them out. Now, I just gotta find someone to install these things. :)
