My 08 Nomad is stock intake and exhaust.
I am tired of the pinging in hot weather when I roll on the throttle to pass.
What is the preferred brand TFI people are using??
I'm seriously considering the Cobra unit.
My bike has 10,000 miles and has not been back to the dealer since the 600 mile check, is there anything I should check that would cause pinging B4 I spend the $$ on a TFI?
Thanks,
Bob

I am leaning toward the Cobra unit also .I have heard no complaint or problems with it.
I installed the Cobra FI2000 recently on my 07, with the same setup as you. It eliminated the pinging with premium, and I kept playing with the settings to the point where I could use 89 and it was almost completely gone unless it was super hot. Last weekend I did a modified Caddman intake mod. Installed a Spectre 9" oiled filter with a chrome cover. I left the solenoids in place and hooked up, as I ride all year long and don't see the need to remove them. To quiet them down, I ran tubing from them to the original intake side through the intake tube and zip tied them in place. Then it was time to play with the settings again. I will say that I consider it a success, as I am now running 89 octane, the bike has more jump when I twist the throttle, and the fuel economy hasn't gone down much if I am just cruising.
I gave the explanation to say, the Cobra worked for me, and it was simple and flexible enough for the intake mod.

The Cobra and Dobeck are both good units. I installed the Dobeck on mine but would go either route.

Thanks, I think I'll get the Cobra unit.

I ordered one I think I got a good deal.
I used Google shopping found Powersport superstore for
$184.88
then I Googled Powersport superstore coupon code found a code that worked for 5% off - $9.24
= $175.64
+ $11.49 shipping
Total = $187.13
Not bad I'm happy.

I just installed the Dobeck on my otherwise stock '05 and all pinging is gone on the hottest days with regular gas, although mileage has dropped to the low 30s. May tune it on higher grade to see if that makes economic sense. Really like the new feel and control of the bike and maybe the mileage could improve when I quite having so much fun with the new responsiveness.

I installed the Cobra in August '08 and have been pleased with the results. I usually run one tank of high octane (either 92 or 93) then a tank of 89. That way I always have at least a mix of 90 octane or higher. Doesn't save that much money to use 87 octane. If you fill up and it took five gallons it would cost me $1.00 more to fill up with high octane as opposed to filling up with 87. Might as well use the good stuff.

I've been running the Cobra for over a year, air and exhaust mods done and run 87 octane with no issues. Easy setup and install.

Either one.... The Dobeck TFI has 4 pots, you use 3. The Cobra has 3 pots you use 2.
On a all otherwise stock bike the setting in the book go right out the window. For get the clock.
Install the unit, either one, and set op the cobra by ajdusting pot 1 to best rpm. Then once you have it, go ride and trim pot 2 from scratch running no higher than 3rd gear in 1/4 mile runs as fast as you dare.
With TFI the same thing, other than set pot 4 to 9:00 which turns the unit ON.
Kuryakin has a TFI rebranded from what has to be Dobeck's TFI. So far as i can see it is just a different decal and a lower over all price.
These 3 all come in 2 ways. Solder on, and plug n play.
What I like about plug n play, is you simply plug things in. What i don't like about plug n play is the injector connectors are piggy backed, and you have to deal with all the wire length.
What I like about the solder on is you can chop out extra wire, and solder to the injector wires at the ecu. (neater, but more complicated, as the wires are hard to tell one from another at he ecu. The colors are hard to tell, at least for me.)
When I do the solder on type, I solder on pig tails so the unit can be unplugged any time you want. *IE selling the bike and the buyer for what ever reasons does not want the unit.

I found my Dobeck on the for sale section of this site for $90.
It was the non-plug-n-play. The installation was easy after lifting the tank. The connectors are cool too, there is a part that crimps onto the wire and another tab that connects to the TFI wire that slides into the crimped on part. This way it can be disconnected if needed.
My '07 is stock except for the debaffle. The TFI has made it run way better.
I used 87 ( :)) octane and still get about 36 miles to the gallon, depending how hard I leave the starting line.
I used the settings that came with the instructions, I'll have to try macmac's method sometime.

97 octane/ Where do you find that? Best i can find is 93 at Sunoco. By best i don't mean best i guess. I run 87 octane only.
I hate the scotch locks. When I get to be King these fubarred scotch locks will be banned.
Instead of using them I solder. To soilder at the ecu the hard part ois seeing the colors of the wires correctly. They use a dingy pink and gray and a dingy green and gray and for me it is the Devlis own work to see the wire colors right.
The result is i get my wife to see, and still i check with ohms. There is another pink and gray looking wire there TO ME Quadripple check, then heat with a bic to fry off the insulation, bild a pig tail to solder on both of those ecu wires and the rest is cake.
After i ban the scotch locks, I intend to have the engineers who wrote the book settings tied to a post and shot. Then I will salvage the scalps.
That book is paper, not stone. These settings are considered to be a starting point only. And base on after market in general intake and exhaust mods, both of them!
