I wear leather chaps a lot, but they are not very practical in the hot humid South during the summer months. Jeans are cool, but offer little protection.
I am looking for some armored pants for big guys, but most manufacturers think no one exist with a waist larger than 46 inches. Anyone got a source for me?

Can't help you there as I am just a jeans wearer. I know I should wear some protection but just don't. I am sure someone on here will be able to give some advice or a link. Just keep looking and I am sure you will find them.

The wife says this should be my incentive to lose weight...sigh...right. :-)

I can't comment on how large a size they go up to, but I picked up a brand called Crash Pads at a local bike shop. My waist size is usually 36. The tag inside says made in Oregon, size 4/L.

On Newenough, they have some FirstGear HT Air 2.0 mesh pants that look like they may fit your needs.

There may be some others there too. I just did a quick search for you.

I use the Firstgear HT Overpants. They go to a 48 waist and there are adjustable straps that help a little for the ones of us that are larger.

When you go to the New Enough site, click on the "advanced search/hard to fit" link. It's right under the regular "search" button. Hopefully you'll find something to fit your needs. My wife wears the FirstGear HT Air 2.0 mesh pants also.

Also do a search for Diamond Gusset Jeans. They make jeans with a gusset in the crotch for a little extra room. I have several pair and they're quite comfy.

One thing they make is a jean for riding that has kevlar sewn in to all the areas you'd need it in the event of a crash. It's called the "Defender". Here's a link for the big guy's page:

Hope it helps,

Pants arrived in the mail today. Will try on tonight and at least report regarding fit, but no report on how they handle asphalt...hopefully. :-)

Has anyone tried these chaps? I had something similar when I lived in Florida in the 80's but not this nice. My leather chaps were to hot and did not breath. These can be ordered with kevlar pipe guards, knee pads and other options as well.

Interesting way they do the sizing...on thigh width.

Gusset Clothing's Defender Jeans arrived today. The sizing is accurate. Looks like quality construction. YKK zippers.
Not sure about this kevlar. Hope it works if needed. Armor would have been a little more reassuring, but will try this out....hopefully not literally.
