View Full Version : car tire mileage
There is a lot of talk about C/T tires lately but I don't see anybody posting how many mile the have on them and if anyone had problems with them. I'm thinking about about it next time around. I'm not big on twisties but like sweeper and sight seeing. The wife likes open and highway roads so I think a C/T would be the way to go. So who has how many miles on and did anyone wear one out yet??? Thanks

All I can tell you is I have a Dunlop SP5000 with almost 12,000 miles on it, and from the looks of it, I should get double that - at least.

I just got back from a 1400 mile trip. My friends were very interested in my new rear tire (Dunlop SP 5000 195/60-16) and were watching very closely. They were impressed riding behind me noticing how well the tire kept tread contact with the road even in the twisties. We did ride on some wet roads, and the larger tread contact sure made me feel a bit better.
Mine is still new with only about 2K miles on it, but so far so good.

My CT has over 18,000 miles on it and is getting pretty thin in the middle. It is a cheap tire and low profile; Achilles ATR Sport 195/55-R16; $54. I have been pleased with this tire, but will probably go with a little taller profile and better quality tire this time around.

You can't beat that for dollar value, compared to a bike tire. You may have convinced me to try one next time around.
from what I seen and heard, if and when, I'll go with goodyear assurance triple tred 205/60R/16 I like what VulcanE said about the tire having rounded edges and someone got over 40,000 miles out of one

Here's my Dunlop SP 5000 195/60-16 with 8,651 miles. Measured the tread depth with a 6" machinist's scale. The two inside grooves are exactly 5/32" deep. The two outer grooves are 11/64" deep. 95% of the miles are riding 2 up. At least 75% of the miles are pulling my trailer while riding 2 up. I feel that I can safely get another 10,000 - 12,000 miles on the tire. If not, I'm still money ahead and feel very comfortable with it on wet roads and in tight curves. Sweet spot on air pressure is 26#.

Well, I just feel more comfortable ridin' on a round tire than a square one. Like to see a c/t stay close behind me on a twistie! I have full confidence in a motorcycle tire. My life is worth more than trying to save $50/year. Just an opinion.

The original post didn't ask for car tire criticism. Simply how many miles darksiders are getting on their tires. But since you brought it up, I'll bet I have more square inches of contact patch on the pavement in a curve with my "square tire" than you do with your round one. Show me just one documented case of a cruiser crashing solely because it was riding on a car tire. Bet you can't.

Ut-Oh, here we go. http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif
My Dunlop E3 160/80B (rear) has about 3/16" (measured with a digital caliper) left after 8500 mi.
(sorry, Mitch0, mostly solo with no trailer though. Then again, I do spend a lot of time on the sides but there is even more left there. Somebody here once mentioned that the bias ply do wear better on the Nomad rear andafter getting 16K out of my last one, I'm becoming a believer. Oops, this is a CT thread... :)
