View Full Version : Driver backrest with a stock seat?
My Mustang seat is being redone again at MeanCity Cycles.
They said it's hard to do much to Mustang seats. The are nice seats but they are shaped to be comfortable for shorter (<6') riders.
I put the OEM stock seat on the bike and went for a ride yesterday. It's been a while since it was on the bike but it's not bad at all. It does not bring you forward as the Mustang and it seems to be a little higher. It would be very comfortable with a backrest.
Do any of you guys have a backrest with a stock seat?
I see several on EBAY but not sure which brand will work better.
With that said the Mustang will go for sale if I find a suitable backrest. It'll make a good seat for someone who is shorter than me.

I have a Custom World Intl. backrest, it came on the bike when I bought it and its not too bad at all. It seems to be a very common backrest and Ive seen it used on a lot of different bikes.

I have the Kaw F&S on mine. See pic below. They are not supposed to fit 1600's but all it takes is adding a couple holes to mount and they do.

+1 on the grasshopper backrest. It's well made and is very comfortable. The install takes about two minutes, and after that it just pops on and off with no tools if you want to take it off.

I put the Grasshopper on with my stock seat, and love it. It does, however, feel like it puts me forward an inch or two, though. But it works great. (I am 6' 2" Ivan, if that is any help.)

+5 on the grasshopper.
It took a little getting used to. Now I wouldn't go far without it.

Yes, and what a tremendous difference the Grasshopper backrest made. At first, it seems to push forward slightly. But it's like the "lumbar support" in an automobile seat and kind of fits into the curvature of the spine. I find the stock seat quite comfortable and the backrest keeps my back muscles relaxed.

You will not be disappointed with the Grasshopper backrest. I ordered one a month or so ago and love it. A bracket attaches beneath the original seat hardware and once installed (about two minutes) the seatback can be inserted and removed at will with no tools and when removed the bracket is all but invisible between the driver and passenger seats. I did not find that it moved me forward any in the seat but it does keep me riding in a more upright stance which is much better for my cranky lower back. Now I just need some better risers to put the grips more in reach when I am sitting upright.
You can see the backrest on my images below.
