I lost a good pair of gloves today !
I was about 45 minutes into a ride and a guy in a truck came up beside me and informed me my left hand hard bag was open.
I pulled over as soon as it was safe and the new gloves I had in there were gone. Luckily I put most of my stuff in the other hard bag, rainsuit, camera etc. I guess I must have taken the key out while the bag was open in the garage and then closed it but the catch never fully engaged. Probably the first bump on my ride and the bag popped open.

Sorry to hear you lost your gloves, new ones at that. At least it wasn't any worse.
Ride safe.

Thats too bad about losing the gloves, Ive never had my door pop open but I always check to make sure its latched properly, so far Ive been lucky.

I didn't think the bag would even latch unless the key was in it

I don't know what bike you have but the wife once over stuffed the left bag on her 04 Nomad and although it was locked it popped open going down the road. We both learned pack correctly and don't over stuff the hard bags.

Hi Borto, The door does latch but not fully. Try it.

Sorry to hear about the gloves. Glad it wasn't worse.

I have an obsession about making sure my bags are securely locked before riding off. You just made it worse. :) :)

I guess I'll have to give it a shot tomorrow out of curiosity!

This is too bad. I hate it when I loose stuff that I paid good money for and feel for you.

In my 11 years of riding a Nomad, I've only had it happen once. Don't know what happened exactly, but I just must not have gotten it shut right somehow.

I left a copy shop that was about 2-3 miles from home after putting the copies in the bag. When I got home the lid was open, and the copies were gone. I retraced my route and the copies were in the store's bag in the road about 5 blocks from home.

Don't know what the deal was, but it's only happened once.

I'm with S C Sid. Obsessed with securing the bags. The door pops open and breaks off. Not only the replacement cost of the bag, but trying to match 9 year old paint, shoooooot. Thanks for the post redjay, I'll probably go from obsessed to full out PARANOID!!!!!!!
Thanks for your time

Never had mine pop open but damn if I can remember to remove the key half the time. Jeeesh. Just yesterday I got off my bike to walk around an airport and ogle the planes and when I got back to the bike I panicked when I could not find the key in any one of my pockets. Looked everywhere! Naturally it was sitting in the lock on the saddle bag where it had no doubt been for the last 40 miles. Stupid!

I was out on the bike today for about 4 hours and found myself looking every 15 minutes to see if the bag had popped open again !

It's a good thing you didn't lean hard into a left curve while riding, you might have drug that door on the pavement! Glad things turned out well, except for the loss of your gloves.

Last year I was headed to work had the hard bags packed full about half way there(just about all the ride is highway) a woman pulls along side of me and she's holding up her purse. I look back and the hard bag was open. Fortunately for me I just got liners for the bags and nothing had come out. I had made one stop along the way and the bags were closed. It must have been closed just enough to hold until a good bump jarred it open. I was thankful someone warned me as the side that was open had my work laptop in it and the nice curves in the road were just ahead...

Sorry for the mishap. Haven't had door open yet but did loose stuff off luggage rack when bungee cam loose. Had no idea when on the highway and it was all gone. Maybe you can rig a couple push button door switches to the side doors and hook them to your horn. Better than the door chime in your car when door is open!

That's a good idea. An indicator lamp mounted somewhere around the controls and a couple micro switches would do the trick.

Good info to post. I'll definitley take an extra moment to be sure the bags are properly locked from now on. You have saved at least one of us from having this happen.

I have had that problem with my bags. It has happened twice. 1st time I thought it was my fault, second time both bags popped open when we hit a pot hole. We were on a group ride at the time. I took it back to the dealer.

They could not find anything wrong, but did agree to replace the left door as it is warped and always was from day one.

Don't know if this will solve the problem or not. I don't know why Kawa did not design a latch more like the ones used on BMW saddle bags. The latch on those things is strong enough to keep an elephant inside. It is a simplier design and there is no way that door is coming open once the latch is closed in its normal position.

My left bag opened up on the interstate about 30 miles into a trip. Both bags were packed and for the trip but luckily all I lost was my trip itinerary I had printed out. All I can think of is I didn't latch it properly. I am paranoid now and find myself checking the bags all the time, even after I physically try to open them after I shut them and pull the key.

Mine do. I seldom lock them. I find it much more convient to leave them unlocked. Did the mod on Gadget's site.
