My wife complains about the vibration in the stock Nomad backrest. Anybody else experience this. Any cures?

DUCT TAPE a 4" piece across the lips will solve the problem http://s2.images.proboards.com/lipsrsealed.gif ;)
Seriously, no complaints from the spouse.

The PO's wife said it bothered her but my wife said she's never noticed it. I've reached back and felt it when solo and there is some vibration there but I don't feel it anywhere else and have not thought much more about it. Don't recall it being mentioned by others here.

I haven't asked my wife about this, nor has she said anything, but I will ask. However, I feel vibration through my backrest on a Corbin seat. I think it's from the road as it changes with different surfaces.

Point out that people pay hundreds of dollars for those fancy leather massage chairs, and she gets it for free on the bike.

I did like the duct tape suggestion, though. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif

My girlfriend tells me that she has the vibration in the passenger backrest also. I told her to turn around and face the other way and ENJOY the ride. She hasn't complained since.

Good suggestion. But then you create the problem of her never wanting to get off the bike!

Just wanted to let anyone who's passenger has had a problem with the vibration in the backrest know I think I have fix the problem on my ride. I took the backrest off and installed flat rubber sink washers over the backrest studs and reinstalled the pad. This seems to have reduced the vibration through the backrest mounting plate.

Yes, I heard the same complaint from my wife when I first got the Nomad. She hasn't been saying much about it lately. Next time I feel the bike shift I'll have to do a head check and see if she turned around on me. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Something you can do if the backrest is tubular is pack it with weight. Lead birdshot or BB's or even sand will work well to contain the vibration. Plug the ends of the tube with silicone afterward, before installing any decorative plastic caps.

My backrest is solid stock and my wife never complains about vibration.

One thing I've noticed is that with my trunk mounted on the bike, the trunk really vibrates at idle. It's securely mounted to a Wompus rack, which is securely mounted at 6 points to the bike. I guess it's similar to the increased vibration at the handlebar ends people notice when they add risers. Vibration increases as you move farther from the mass.

I don't ride 2-up, so I can't say if the trunk or backrest vibration is disturbing to a rider.

mine constanly complains about it on the longer rides. she is fine for short around town trips bit give her 20 minutes and she'll mention it. The vibration causes her back to itch. Vibes not the problem. I see her clawing her back cuz if the itching. The rubber washer method is definitely worth a try. I believe I will do it tomorrow and report back after the next city hopping trip we take.

My wife complained about the backrest vibration from the first ride. I did the same as mrclean. Rubber Washers were added between the bolts and frame. She says its much better but stills complains from time to time about it. I'm thinking about trying thicker washers and one of the methods mentioned by CaddmanQ.

Hmm.... Both my wife and son have mentioned the backrest vibrates against their back. Didn't think much of it till I read this. I've been thinking about getting the ridiculously expensive Mustang pad replacement anyway because the stock one is kinda of thick and makes it difficult to attach my laptop backpack to the passenger seat.

You are the only other person I know of that can honestly say their wife has fallen asleep on the back seat of a Nomad. Something in the water? Or, are the Nomads really just that comfortable? I've caught my wife snoozin a couple of times back there.

mine does it too. She has what we call road narcolepsy.
She hates driving or riding anywhere. Driving makes her sleepy as all get up and riding just puts her to sleep. Quite often I feel her just slump against my back and she just sleeps for a little while. 20 or 25 minutes later she wakes up a little startled but fine.I just let her sleep. She's holding onmy my gut. I know shes there.

I said my wife never complains, but when I actually asked her about it she told me she almost never leans against the back rest. I never knew....

Same here. It doesn't seem to be an issue for us.

This is a good thread. My wife said that she feels the vibration but is more bothered because it makes her "itchy".

I took the back rest off my nomad and found that the hard plastic backing was mounted directly to the metal bar without any dampening material. I went to Lowe's and purchased 4 rubber grommets at a cost of less than $3.00 with tax. I then drilled the 4 mounting holes a little larger so that the grommets would fit as designed for the bolt size on the bracket. I believe it will make a difference because there is now no metal to metal fastener contact.

I will let you know the grommet results when I get the report from my expert after she returns from her out of town trip.

Would be nice to see a pic of these to know what to get at the store. I mentioned this to the wife and now every time she rides she asks me to look into it.

The good news is that the grommets fit really well. On the flip side however, my wife said they didn't make any difference in the way it feels to her. I am going to look a little further down the mounting points to see if there are any other metal to metal connections but I am thinking that she is just going to have to get used to the vibration.

Just asked my wife...she says no vibration.

Those who have a vibration...
What tires are you running.
What other mods that may have increased/changed the vibration (Bafflectomy?)

mrclean
07-14-2008, 06:28 PM
I've ran Stones, Metzlers and Dunlops. Always had it. Did the bafflectomy, never changed. Minimized it with the rubber washers. On occasion I feel a little of the vibration when my backside is pushed up against the nose of the passenger seat.
