View Full Version : Oil change

08-15-2007, 04:04 PM
Ok... been 3500 miles since I bought the Nomad. Time for an oil change. I went out and looked and it has a simple spin on oil filter..... I thought these were all replaced with the cannister style with the nut on the front (tht's what the sevice manual I bought from Kawasaki shows)...... remember it's an early '99(98) with the oil level sight glass way down under... (no pun Tex)..... does this indicate in any way that I still might have that plastic gear?? Is there a way to tell..... and if I'm not having any problems shoud I just replace the spin on filter with what's on there????

Remember this is Nico.... MachoDC that has the shop do everthing up untill now!! KawaNOW!!!

I NEED ANSWERS AND TO BE SMITED DAMMIT!!!!

I believe you have the plastic gear. Its easy to tell you have the plastic gear by being in the middle of absolutely nowhere and you'll be broken down, thats how you will know! My 2006 has a spin on filter.

08-15-2007, 05:42 PM
My previous 2000 Classic had the spin on as well as my 1996 750.

I'm with blowndodge on this one Nico....According to the Kawanow spec sheet, http://www.kawanow.org/specs.htm , you do have the plastic gear. Unless it's been replaced sometime before. Also, I would replace your oil filter with the same type spin-0n filter. Just my 2CW.

IIRC-

No question on the POG. That wasn't changed until 2000. The 1999 Drifter was the only '99 to get the SOG.

If you call kaw give them the vin they know if it has been replaced by them. Thats what i did when i had mine & as far as they knew it was still plastic.

08-15-2007, 06:34 PM
Ok... thanks guys... so I'll stick with the spin on oil filter.... and no way to tell if the POG has been replaced except as BD so eloquenlty stated about being in the middle of nowhere and breaking down.... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Jeff.... I will check with Kawi..... that obviously wasn't a recall item I suppose......

08-15-2007, 07:03 PM
Anyone know part number for the spin on oil filter?

tex
08-15-2007, 07:24 PM
Genuine Kawasaki part number 16097-1068 Have looked at buykasaki.com they have full parts lists for all kawasakis.... unfortunately only the US models but it's real helpful for check accesories etc

08-15-2007, 07:49 PM
Thanks tex.... I noticed there is a 16097-1068 & -1058....

08-15-2007, 07:59 PM
GH....you the man.

08-15-2007, 09:35 PM

I bought the Rotella 5/40 gallon size and had to go to Auto Zone and get the bosch 3300 since Wally world was out of the 7317. Problem is, I'm working from the ground and having a bear of a time getting the oil filter off since I...BOUGHT THE WRONG DAMN FILTER WRENCH!!!. Sorry, had to get that moment of stupidity out.

"A fairly new player in the synthetic market is Shell with Rotella-T Full Synthetic 5w40. It is not energy-conserving and according to Shell performs competitively with Mobil Delvac One full synthtetic, which means it offers even more protection than does Mobil One 15w50. At least one motorcyclist has reported to me good results so far with his use of the new Synthetic Rotella-T. I haven't tried it yet."

http://vmaxoutlaw.com/tech/motorcycle_oil.htm

08-20-2007, 10:22 PM
"I'm sometimes asked if it's ok to blend your own oils. Yes, it is. Oils are all made out of pretty much the same chemicals, and nothing really bad will happen. If I wanted to blend my own oil, I expect I would use something like 25% Motul 5100 10W-40 and 75% Chevron Delo 15w-40, which would get me both the advantages of a lot of diester stock (5100 is pure diester) and the diesel additive package. In the winter, however, I would use 25% Motul and 75% Rotella synthetic, to get the superior low temperature performance. In fact, I just run Rotella synthetic in everything I own, year round: ST1300, DL650, Superhawk, Chevy Silverado, motorhome."

Doc, I just put in Rotella this last weekend. I notice that it runs smoothly and with a little extra get up 'n go. I also notice that when I've been sitting in stop and go frequently, the fan stays on a much shorter time than before, so it's doing a good job. The cost was also decent too.

Definitely no expert here. I put Rotella-T 5w40 in the Nomad today. Used the wally world filter you guys recommended. Only been about 40 miles so far but bike seems to run smoother, shift better and has a little more power. Of course this could all be in my head and imagination but what the heck as long as I think it did all those things and it makes me feel like it was a job well done, I'm Happy!

08-22-2007, 06:54 PM
TC... I know it must be faster than Blowndodge's now!!

08-22-2007, 08:53 PM
I looked at Walmart and there does not seem to be a Supertech oil filter that replaces the FRAM 6017A which is what my bike calls for. When I put that one and the ST7317 next to each other, the Supertech is longer than the FRAM. Will that matter?

socwkbiker
08-22-2007, 09:02 PM
Won't matter at all according to all of the people here using that filter.

You know Nico and Socwkbiker there has been an over assumption that the over consumption of alcohol improves the physical esthetics of those less endowed with resplendence. This is not necessarily true. I once drank a half keg in preparation for love making with my (first) wife. We lived in the country then. I looked at her and thought HMMMMMM! I looked at one of our Goats and thought HMMMMMM! I looked at the (x-wife)and thought HMMMM! I looked at the Goat and said HEEEEERRRRRE LITTLE GOAT. But alas it was to my dismay as I fell asleep on one of the goats legs and found out that when the goat woke up it chewed it's leg off because of my lack of resplendence.

OK......... got the The Walmart ST7317 filter (last one they had) ...... couldn't decide on the oil......... so......... after 45 minutes of looking at all the oils................ ??? ??? ???

I got 1 qt Mobil 1 15w-50 grey cap, 1 qt Rotella synthetic 5w-40 Diesel ...... and 1 qt Castrol GTX 20w-50 High mileage (not energy conserving).... just because ::)

I made Nico's own special blend http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/>

I didn't mess with the screen. 3 qts came out.... 3 qts went in... it's near the top of the sight glass :-*

And guess what??? http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

It runs cooler, it shifts smoother, it idles smoother, it has more acceleration, runs better overall, it's bigger, badder, and meaner, and yes, you guessed it .........................
