View Full Version : Texas Hill Country Trip...Dates

trip

Sorry to do this, but I need to change the dates for the Hill Country trip to the last week in April, in essence, bump it a week later. I did this now for two reasons, to give me more time from the possible birth of my grand-daughter and to possibly give Watchman more time from the birth of his grandchild. I'd like the change the dates to April 27, 28 & 29, 2010.

While we were in Antlers, several of you had asked me to put together a Texas Hill Country ride for the SouthCentral group next year.

So, let's hold the
KawaNOW Texas Hill Country Run
April 27, 28 & 29, 2010
Leakey, Texas

April 27th is a Tuesday, that will give us three days before to travel there (April 24th, 25th & 26th). The 29th is on a Thursday, if we all leave on Friday morning, that will give us three days to travel home (April 30th, May 1st & 2nd). In essence, the trip will be from April 24th until May 2nd.

Our base will be in heart of the Texas Hill Country....Leakey, Texas (pronounced Lake-ee). Leakey is located 80 miles Northwest of San Antonio (as the crow flies) or 127 miles Southwest of Austin (as the crow flies).

The Texas Hill Country around Leakey sports three of the top rated roads in Texas... The three twisted sisters.... RR 335, RR336 and RR337. It also has a motorcycle museum, the Texas Stonehenge and the Alamo Village in Bracketville, where the movie "The Alamo" with John Wayne was filmed.

We will stay at the D'Rose Inn while in Leakey, www.droseinn.com (http://www.droseinn.com) , which is a motel for motorcyclists only.

I usually take an annual trip to the Hill Country just because I love the area so well. I didn't get to go in 2009, so 2010 will be my pilgrimage with you guys. Here is a link to my last trip... http://www.hilliard.ws/hc2008/hc2008.htm

At least 10 hrs....All of the planned rides are at least a day away from here. Some of us don't mind traveling a few hours to enjoy a good weekend of riding with friends.

There is a cure for that Mitch. Set up a ride in your area and the rest of us can travel to your area.
Maybe you could put us up in some of those left over FEMA trailers.

A ride along the Mississippi Gulf Coast is excellent and only 2 hours from here. That's if you like riding along beautiful beaches and stopping by Casinos for lunch and a little gaming. The beaches start at Waveland, MS and continue into Florida. Nice in Spring and Fall.....hot in the summer. Around home, there is marsh and cypress swamps. Some find it beautiful.....I just find it "home".

I may be able to make it out to Leakey for a day or so without the home team squealing too much. ???

A group from Work and PFD is working up a 5-day Spring ride to AR/TN returning via Tupelo and the Natchez Trace.

And dont forget the South Central rally in ES next June. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Whatever you do LW....don't go over 55mph on the Trace. Believe me...I know.

OK...here's what I'm thinking on the Hill Country Run........give everyone 3 days to get to the Hill Country....3 days to ride the roads and see everything....and three days to get back home. This should give everyone including Watchman and Liz a good opportunity to get there and back.

I know it's premature, but I'm thinking about holding it the last week in April. That way it'll give us a little time between the KSCTHCR (KawaNOW SouthCentral Texas Hill Country Run) and the SC Rally in June.

Discussion?

Sounds good to me Trip. It would still be nice riding in late April. Spring is normally pretty dry in the hill country??? Just curious, would the 3 days for riding begin on Tuesday to prevent cutting into the following work week? I'm sure that it would be easier on some folks vacation time if they left on Saturday and arrived Monday afternoon...ride on T, W, & Th... and arrive back home on Sunday. It doesn't matter a whole lot to me as this week may fall on my days off with my crazy schedule. If I have to schedule a weekend or a full week off, I will.

I'll do that. Ive heard that they are a bit anal about that suggested speed lol. I guess my speedo being off on the high end kept me out of trouble when I rode the southern leg between Clinton MS and Natchez after the '08 Central Rally. Shoot I didnt even see a single LEO on that section, but didnt go more than 5 over the limit.

Cajunrider
11-10-2009, 10:57 PM
You'll see plenty Federal Rangers and Mississippi HP working radar and laser on the Trace. Much of the speed limit is 50 mph. It's a beautiful ride with lots of turkey and deer. You will see many Canada Geese at the Ross Barnett Reservoir just north of Jackson, MS. Pay attention for gas stops. There are none on the Trace, they are all off of the highway. Don't miss an opportunity to top off. They are few and far between.

I figure the HC trip could start on a Saturday...travel Sat, Sun and Mon....ride the HC Tues, Wed. and Thurs. Then travel home Fri, Sat and Sun. For those that are retired, it's no big deal, but for those that work, it would only tie up 5 working days and 2 weekends.

And BTW, that's the same schedule I used for the National in Custer. Seemed to work OK. I also figure we all can meet up on Sunday night at a designated town and motel, then ride into Leakey together the next day?

Mitch is definately right about that LW. Believe it or not, my GPS helped greatly in that department...as well as finding places to eat.

Sounds like a plan, when we get definate dates I will schedule time off. I can't wait!
Mitch's riding country sounds good too. Somewhere along those beautiful beaches there is some wonderful seafood I hope. Even the swamps and marshes may sound good to someone who hasn't seen them, at least for a little while.
That is the wonder about this country, so many different geographical areas and lifestyles. The motorcycle has opened a new way to experience the beauty for many of us. Of course riding with group like this makes it that much better!

Thanks for the link Jim, looks like a good resource for planning that leg of the trip. So far the only thing for sure is that the group wants to get together again for a spring ride, and the basic geography of the loop route. As the timing gets firmed up I'll surely post an itinerary. Next year will be jam packed with six fire schools and riding and work and riding and vacation and riding. . .

I slip a cover over mine at night most of the time. It somewhat deters theft and keeps curious "lookers" from sitting on it or touching.

Or, would you rather meet up on Monday on the way to Leakey?
