If you haven't removed the windshield from your Nomad and then take it completely apart to give it a cleaning, you are in for a treat.
Removed my windshield a couple of days ago and got around to taking it apart today. No problem taking it all apart and giving it a good cleaning. Putting that sucker back together is where the fun comes in. After working with it and figuring out the best way to reassemble it I finally got it figured out. Then got it back on the bike tonight.
I had so much fun doing it that I think I will do it again in another six months or maybe a year from now.

http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif I hear ya.
When I bought my clearview windshield they say to put it on the bike and ride to see if you like it and if not you can send it back.
But you have to leave the plastic protective wrap on it.
So if you do that you have to take your stock shield apart and reasemble the pieces to the clearview. Now, even if you decide to keep it you have to take it apart one more time to get the plastic off.
I decided the heck with that, once is enough. Took the plastic off and installed it.
As far as taking it apart just to clean it, not going to happen :)

TC, I know what you mean. Unless mine gets terribly messed up between the gaskets and things I will probably not take mine apart again either. What a job.

I take mine apart at least 3 times a year and give it a good cleaning. It's a hassle, but not that bad.
I've had mine apart twice now. It doesn't seem to get easier. Really could use that third hand.

Don't know if there is a "best way" except to have a extra pair of hands available. Can be done w/o the extra person, but easier with one.
I think its in the marriage vows for your spouse to help. My wife helps hold it while I put the pieces back together.
It is a pain in the butt. Very easy to scratch if your not careful.
Just remember how the pieces come off and put back in reverse order. And get the big, main rubber gasket holes lined up before installing the bolts.

I haven't taken my 07 shield apart yet and no plans too unless something needs replacing.
It's a little dirtier between the 2 shields then the main shield is but not that bad and I don't look through that section of it anyway.

Since my windshield is always in it's lowest position, I removed the extra piece of plastic. It served no purpose except to collect dirt and water stains between it and the windshield. I often remove the windshield to do a thorough cleaning in areas by the handlebars where it's hard to get to with the windshield in place. But now it's just a matter of removing the four bolts, two on each, that attach it to the bike.

The first thing I do is clear a picnic table and cover that with a beach towel. Then the whole bloomin thing gets laid down on that.
The last thing I do is antiseize all the bolts.. That stainless is dead soft and will gaul easy.
You guys wanna watch how tight you get these bolts too, as you can pull dents in the chrome frame, and they are ugly!
side note: If anyone has the outter and the top is damaged, I might like it. The OEM is too tall for me, but I refuse to cut it down.
At the lowest setting I could stand to drop it 2 or 3 inches.

I take mine apart about twice a year. I bring it inside and work on it while watching a movie. It takes me about 2 hours to take it apart clean it and put it back together.
When putting it back together, I usually require someone else to help out.

Actually, I do, but only once every couple of months. I remove the rear bags and raise the bike with my Harbor Freight lift so I can spin the wheels when I'm cleaning them. I just use Windex since it seems to clean the crud off pretty good. I clean the engines on my cars too.

Mac I took mine off and removed all the Hardware, then took it to a auto glass shop and had him cut 2" streight across the top then used a sanding block to round off the corners. Best thing I ever did. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif Total cost...$12.50 including sanding blocK! ;)

http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif I have a buddy who cleans the bottom of the bike. Motor, frame etc. I tell him why no one is going to see under ther?
http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif He has tipped it over 3 times. Nothing serious, he was stopped each time. He looks at me and says,"they see the bottom of my bike"

I can cut the windshield myself and do a pro job of it, rounding the edges is a no brainer for me as well, but i just don't want to cut this one.
If someone wants to and needs to know what to do I would be happy to say it all, in text, or do it here..
I don't see where this is difficult and no one is saying why... to dis-assemble and reassemble this isn't hard for me to do, other than the first time I had gauled bolts from the PDI installers.
I remove the 4 frame to forks bolts with a face cloth over the lamp bucket, sorta stuffed under the screen....
With the whole thing on a table with a towel I can reach all the bolts and nuts by myself.
I loosen all of them and then remove them one by one from the center working to the far edges.. The assembly is the going back the same way outter edges first working to the center, then snugg them all at once.
maybe there is no time.... If I have anything I always have time. That means you might need to spend a night here, which has happened many times for folks.

As long as there is a windshield thread, I have the following question:
I raised my windshield on my 09 1700 the other day, and tried to move the sub-shield down to .4" above the headlight as the manual says. I loosened the bolts that hold the windshield and sub- windshields together. The sub-windshield would not budge. Should the subwindshield slide down with the bolts loosened in place, or do the bolts need to be completely removed. Any advice to make this as easy as possible?
On my 1700 I had to loosen all the bolts (3 each side - if the old timers is playing up) before I could get the sub shield to slide down

The middle piece should slide if you loosen all six of the bolts. You shouldn't have to remove them. The rubber gaskets on each side are probably stuck to the windshield.

That was the case with mine- gaskets stuck. Take all bolts out, drop acorn nuts down between steering fork and gas tank and headlight bucket, drop wrench on fender putting chip in paint, etc., etc.........

Take it apart and move the sub shield where you want it. If you slide it and there is any dirt in between the two surfaces, they will scratch. That doesn't look good.
