View Full Version : The best seat for a Nomad

I have a good friend that has purchased a Mustang seat but doesn't feel that it is much of an improvement over stock.
I myself, love the mustang seat. I'm sure size, weight, seating position, etc all are a factor.
What is the general consensuses-- If money was not a factor, what would be the best seat? Mustang? Corbin? Russels? Ultimate? Airhawk? Beads? Other?

Having had a Mustang on my last bike and a Daylong on the Nomad for me there is no comparison, Daylong wins by a mile. Yes they are expensive but they do what you buy them for, to ride all day long. I have done 1000 km days with no issues. I certainly could not do that on the Mustang. My 2 cents.

i went from the the mustang to the ultimate and couldn't be any happier.the mustang still produced hot spots for me after a couple hundred miles which are not a problem with the
ultimate.cost for the driver and pillion seat with driver back rest
is $725.

Russell Daylong! Went from stock to Mustang (BIG waste of money for me) to the Russell. I can ride all day now, before it was 60 to 90 minutes before severe pain was an issue.

I only had 80 or so miles on the stock seat before putting the Mustang seat on. Still not perfect, probably score it a nine of ten over the stock seat but toward the end of a long day, it burns a little, but I must be getting used to it or it is breaking in finally as it doesn't seem to bother me as much lately. Gotta love the backrest though!

got the mustang from my loving wife...and thus far have been un-impressed...not sure if there is a break-in period or not but it generally is not comfortable...i do like the back rest.
i am 6'2", 260lbs and this seat really moves me forward and for me the uncomfy spot is inside butt cheeks down to the bones...if money wasn't invested I'd prolly try something else..

Cory, How does your passenger like the pillion seat. Is the Russell passenger seat much more comfortable than the stock pillion?

I use a gel pad during the cold months and a beaded pad during the hot months and it works great for me. You can take the mustang seat and burn it for all i care

We did some 8 hour days with pretty much only fuel stops and lunch and she said that she could have kept going for a few more hours. It was even more improved for her than the drivers seat was for me.
I will likely be selling my seat at some point here if anyone is interested PM me. It is build for a guy that is 6'4" and around 230 pounds (has the third spring). Don't think the Nomad is going to get the miles now with the ST in the garage.

DaBull...just slide a Russel in on the next government contract, call it a missle guidance alternative operator seat. It should go without a hitch ;)

This is like asking "what shoes are best?". You aren't going to get a consensus. Motorcycle seats are very subjective. Some people like the stock seat. I couldn't stand the stock seat.
If price is no object, Russell Daylong is probably the best since they are custom made according to the rider's physique.

When I first bought my Mustang....I too was unimpressed, but after putting some serious miles in that seat....it has become more and more comfortable for me. I think the break-in period is actually much longer than they suggest, but I can now ride tank to tank without many issues. The backrest is most awesome!
I think I will keep the Mustang and any new seat will be going on a new bike, whenever that day comes! CJ is right though....this is like asking what cut of steak is the best, Ribeye or T-Bone. The answer is....the one that you like and works best for you... http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif!

I'd have to say ribeye, Kris. T-bones are overrated. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Not sure how many miles it should take, I think they say 1000 or something. We did over 3000 and it was still no better ( I was likely at 4000+ including solo time).
I agree with CJ though, it is so subjective and dependent on each rider. I think with the custom built seats pretty much any of them will work for any rider, but the off the shelf ones like Mustang, Corbin, etc will not work for everyone, but most will likely be very happy with them it seems.

I totally understand that this is a subjective matter. For example I love the mustang seat. It fits my 5'9'' and 150 lbs body quite well. I can imagine someone else might need something different.
I was just hoping to see a trend. It looks like the Daylong seats fit the bill for those that couldn't stand the mustang.

CJ, I have to say I never oder a ribeye. Too much fat for me. Give me a good sirloin or T-Bone.
As far as seats go I have never owned anything escept stock. When I owned the '83 Goldwing I could ride forever with no problems. I think part of the problem is that our butts are getting older and more tender. My wife whips mine everynight to make it tougher.
Most of the time when I am riding I am in no big rush and since I smoke by the time my butt start feeling a need for some time off the bike I usually pull over and smoke and I am ready to go again. With having to buy gas or stop and eat or to smoke a cigarette I can usually make it fine. The 2000 plus mile trip to Texas and back wasn't so bad. I did find myself stopping to smoke about every 30 mintues near the end of the ride each way.

Like it has been said, this is subjective to one's bottom section. I have beads on the stock seat. Up until recently, this has still given me a numb rear after 100 miles or so. However, on the trip to Eureka Springs, the seat never once bothered me. I did close to 700 miles two seperate days and they were gas tank to gas tank and really never any problems. I was thinking of sending the seat out to get modified but I am now rethinking that. That's $100 to spend on other goodies.

For anyone looking for a less expensive seat modification than a Russell or other , I cam across this guy on the ST forums. Everyone seems to really like what he does to the seats, and the cost is very reasonable and turn around time is very quick (24 - 48 hours). If you find the stock seat a bit off it may work for you, for me the stock seats always seem to be very uncomfortable so think I will still go with a Russell, but may interest some people here.

I would have to say a Porterhouse is my favorite, even better flavor than t-bone and more tender. :-)

Had both of my stock seats modified by Mean City Cycles. The mods helped but still uncomfortable after 100 miles on the rider seat and my wife is squirming after 80 miles. I have a Russell Day Long combo on the way. If this doesn't cure the butt burn we'll just have to sit on bags of ice I suppose. ::)

First off let me state I am cheap,er, I mean frugal.
The stock seat didn't do it for me at all.
I tried customizing it myself, that didn't work out well.
I then tried a seat from an 07 classic, that was better.
Next was a Saddleman gel oem seat from an 06 classic, getting better with each try.
Now I have a seat from an 04 Honda Aero, I think I found what I been lookin' for. I had to cut the front down 3" and cut the groove in the back in 1/2" more so I could use my backrest but I like this setup more each time I ride.

I guess you could say that motorcycle seats are a matter of opinion but I will say that the Russell Day Long is great. If there is a more comfortable seat made today, all I can say is it must be like sitting on a leather sofa! Darlene and I took a 150 mile ride today in 92 degree heat with very high humidity and neither of us squirmed. Not even once. Thanks to Cory (Strobe) for making me a deal I couldn't refuse and most importantly for being a very positive and honest KawaNOW brother. I have learned of the members I have met that it is very easy for them to earn my respect. If Cory comes up with any other items for sale I advise any of you to jump on the deal. He won't let you down. ;)
