I have an awesome awesome opportunity to paint my Nomad this winter and I would like some of your incites and ideas. I really like how Indian paints their bikes. I think that I would like to paint mine willow green and ivory cream like show in this picture. What do you guys think?

I think it would look great!
You should think about putting a drifter/indian style front fender on it.

I have thought about it. I'll have to do some more investigating to see how difficult and $$ that would be.

I seen a couple nomads on the VROC that have done it.
Their is a picture of a green nomad on the VROC front page today.

I like the color choice, but I would use Fender Guitar color, Seafoam Green, very similar but just a bit paler.

I also think it would look really good, I love the nostalgic look of the older style bikes. Id try to get an Indian or Drifter front fender on the front if you could. Its an idea Ive toyed with a few times myself. It would definately make the bike stand out in a crowd.

I think it would look fantastic. I love the two-tone colors that Indian selects. My long-term goal is to also have an Indian front fender on my bike and repaint to a brighter color combination. I'm thinking about a red/cream color though. Or, maybe the darker blue/white combination similar to a Shelby Cobra. It's gonna be a ways off though.

Here is another page for inspiration. A Nomad which now has a Drifter front fender, teardrop headlight, and a Fatboy front end.

I'm thinking about a red/cream color though.

I like the '55-'57 two tones. Turquoise/white or Red/white.

They have red/cream, too.

Did the 1500 nomad only have a single brake caliper on the front?

Utah, I just saw that fender on a 900 the other night it WAS a head turner! I think it would look awesome & you'll probably start a whole new trend. Here's to coloring outside the lines!

Well since you have a 1600 it has dual disc's brakes on the front. Drifter's only have one on the left side. If you want to lose the right side then it's not that big a deal. The Drifter fender has a pocket anc cover for the disc set up. Now, Cobra was making a front fender very much like the Indian out of fibreglass. The Drifter one is plastic. Maybe the fibreglass one would be easier to fab to fit the dual disc set up? Oh, and I have a 99 Drifter, and yes the fenders look cool! However there is one thing that you should be aware of - that big front fender acts like a big sail in the wind! If you are in a big headwind the bike tends to slow down big time! You will suck fuel like there is no tomorrow- just a heads up! I didn't realize that either until the first time I got in a headwind. I was on reserve @ 124 Km's which in miles is 78 miles! Normally reserve is 150 - 170 miles.

I was just looking at the new indians. The have actually cut a spot on both sides of the fender for the calipers. I never noticed it before.

I finally got a hold of Jo Bear-the guy that superduty posted about- and we chatted about the process of mounting the indian fender. It doesn't seem like it is going to be too difficult.

Sound like what I'll need to do is purchase this indian fender http://www.jpcycles.com/productdetail.as....&pag e=&search= (http://www.jpcycles.com/productdetail.aspx?PID=990-574&cs=Indian&GID=5DDC9733-F0C4-481E-A2B4-641E10BE9040&store=&page=&search=)
and carefully cut out the area for the caliper. The edges of the fender are flat (there is no crimp on the underside) and should be fairly easy to cut. I'll just need to be careful and precise.

After I have the spots cut out for the calipers, I'll just need to place the fender over the wheel and line up the angle that I want the fender at and then mark and drill the new holes.

The real Indians had no caliper brakes at the time. Both brakes were drum type back then. So no old Indians would have cut fenders, as you show.

I have no idea who invented disk brakes and or who had them first, but it was a long time before they were popular in the USA.

Utah, I've been hit or miss coming online lately and saw this thread. Glad you got hold of jobear. I met him about 2 years ago and we talked about the mods he made. He was riding up here with a group (mrfuni was with him) and he's a good guy.

Good luck on the mods and the paint. I love the green/cream combo. My wife saw one at Bike Week last year and fell in love with that combination.

Based on the picture with the spoked, single disc wheel on front, I'd say photoshop is the easiest way! ;)

Utah,
Since I'm living vicariously here and letting you be a guinea pig... :)

I found this site below that makes composite fiberglass fenders. They have an Indian style front fender available. I've heard that the OEM Indian fender is a bit narrower than what we need, so I had considered getting a wider one from this site to use. They are $20 more base price than J&P plus another $29 for custom widths. If the OEM Indian needs very much fabrication to make it work, one of these might be an option.

After talking with Jo-Bear, he said that the indian fender at JP will work just fine. I will have to cut out a place for the caliper on the left side and I feel more comfortable working with medal than I do working with fiberglass. I still have at least a month before I start the project. I keep you posted with what I decide to do.

I went and looked at paint yesterday and didn't really like what I saw. I like the idea of the pastel colors, but I was hoping to be able to ad some depth to it. The look to bland.

I'm starting to toy with the idea of painting it a deep deep metallic red and maybe adding light pinstriping.

Paint it any color other than black, and you'll slow it down. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

The fender cut out takes away from the flowing lines.
If possible I would put the covers on like the Drifters have.
The cut outs look like an after thought , but the pockets look like they are designed in from the start, as they were.
You can see the cover I am refering to in this link.

I like the old-school looks best... especially when the "lines" of the bike are of the old-school, which apparently you are going for.

I like the cherry-red; but prefer the colors of the time-period you are looking to replicate.

Just my two-cents Utah.

It's just me, but if I were going for the Indian look, it's hard to beat red/cream.

Your custom paint scheme will make it "YOUR" bike. Go for it.

I'm torn on my G/G '99 'Nad. I've considered repainting it too. But I get SO many compliments on that color scheme, that it's really hard to contemplate painting over it.
Every time I wash and wax it, then see it sitting in the sun, I just can't bring myself to do it.

It's a beautiful thing.. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
